ZACHARY – A two-year-old boy is in stable condition after accidentally shooting himself in the chest with his mother’s gun Wednesday night in Zachary.
The boy’s mother told the Zachary Police Department that the boy was able to get the gun out of his purse inside his home on Shaffett Lane before shooting himself in the chest.
The boy was taken to Lane Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital for treatment. Hospital staff alerted officers to the situation around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday.
The boy is in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon, authorities say.
Police say no criminal charges have yet been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
