Squirrel season opens on Saturday and is the first hunting season to open beginning the 2022-23 hunting season.
Every year, squirrel season is the first to open in late summer and every two weeks or so, another season will open. Some of the seasons go as far as February. A good example is squirrel season.
The first segment opens this Saturday and closes on November 11. That weekend, November 12-13, is the opening of deer season with a modern gun. Most seasons close on that weekend and it is arguably the busiest weekend of the year. After that weekend, squirrel season resumes on November 14 and ends on February 28.
If you go, the bag limit is six per day with a possession limit of 12. Squirrel hunting can be done with almost any weapon, but the weapons of choice are rimfire cartridges, such as a .22 rifle or a shotgun, which can be as small as a .410. Even crossbows, bows, and black powder rifles are legal. Some hunters even use dogs to help them during their hunt and they are also legal.
Squirrels do not have to register through Telecheck. You can learn more about squirrels and squirrel hunting by visiting fw.ky.gov and clicking “hunt.” Then scroll down to Game to hunt and find “squirrels” which has a picture of a squirrel and click on it.
In a couple of weeks they will open pigeon, and archery for turkey and deer but it all starts this Saturday with the squirrels.
