KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Hunters are gearing up for the opening of squirrel season in conjunction with Tennessee Free Hunting Day.
Beginning August 28, hunters will only need their education certification to hunt. Hunting license and Wildlife Management Area permit requirements will be waived during the day.
Hunters under the age of 10 are not required to have a hunter education certification, according to TWRA, but will need to be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21 with the certification.
The day is a great opportunity for hunters to introduce friends and family to the sport of the outdoors, according to the TWRA. It is also open to those who are trying to get back into the sport.
During squirrel season, hunters can catch up to 10 squirrels per day, between August 28 and February 28, with each hunting day starting half an hour before sunrise and ending half an hour after sunset.
On Free Hunt Day, hunters will also be able to hunt armadillos, beavers, coyotes, groundhogs and striped skunks, which are in season year-round.
The TWRA advises that during this time, hunters are asked to check information for specific WMAs in the 2021-22 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide, and are reminded to apply for permission to hunt on private land.
During this time, hunters must also remember to exercise caution and hunt safely.
