Living in Wyoming, you really can’t be surprised by anything you see. The state is full of interesting and fun creatures.
Around Casper it is common to see antelope, deer, bears, moose, squirrels and rabbits. Moose are not a common sight around Casper, but seeing them is not out of the question.
It’s been a few years since there was a moose sighting in the Casper area, until recently. This summer, the Wyoming Fish and Game Department was notified and confirmed that the Moose WAS is in the Casper area.
Listener Randall Harris was out on the back of Casper Mountain recently and caught a photo of a moose.
After consulting with Janet Milek, WGFD Casper Region Public Information Specialist and Wyoming Hookin’ & Huntin’ Outdoors Contributor, it was confirmed that this moose is the same moose seen earlier this summer.
Since this sighting is confirmed and hunting season is upon us, hunters need to be aware of what they are shooting. Shooting a moose without the proper license could result in penalties that could be a financial hit or even jail time.
According to Hunter-Ed, for violating Wyoming’s hunting laws, you could receive many different violations.
- Minor offence: Fine up to $1,000, 6 months in jail, loss of hunting privileges current year and up to 3 years.
- Serious Misdemeanor: Fine up to $10,000, one year in jail, loss of hunting privileges for the current year and up to 6 years
- Crime: Fines, imprisonment and other sanctions
- All violations: The courts decide on restitution to the state for illegally taking any wildlife.
So stay alert, be aware, and be smart when choosing to shoot the game you are hunting.
