AG Composites’ continued growth is a testament to product quality

At the heart of the American dream are the nation’s entrepreneurs, hard-working visionaries who create small businesses that produce high-quality products made by dedicated employees and sold at a fair price. When these small businesses show exponential growth, it’s a sign both that their products meet the needs of consumers and that the company values its workforce. This describes AG Composites perfectly.

When brothers Dave and Matt Tandy founded AG Composites in 2014, they wanted to build the best carbon fiber composite rifle stocks in the world. Typical small-town kids, they both went to the military, then their lives were separated for several years in the aerospace and engineering fields until they got back together. By then Dave, a competitive cyclist studying carbon fiber bike design and aerodynamics, was building carbon fiber housings and telescopes for astronomers around the world. He and Dave, both hunters, decided to build built-in rifle stocks for the extremely popular Remington 700 stock and clone action.

In the years that followed, AG Composites overcame the typical ups and downs of a small business start-up. Today, however, the company is thriving and growing. “AG Composites is not the type of company that sits back and thinks we’ve got it all figured out,” said Matt Tandy. “We are constantly looking for new technologies and materials in our relentless quest to produce products that offer exceptional value and excellent performance for our customers. We are incorporating cutting-edge manufacturing, such as 3D printing, while continuing to research the latest advances in materials.

The company uses modern design software from Solidworks and AutoDesk to create computer-aided design (CAD) models of each manufactured stock. AG Composites engineers bring their CAD modeling experience from the aerospace industry to every designed stock. In addition, the company uses only the highest quality carbon fiber, epoxy, and paint products to manufacture its premium line of rifle stocks. Consistency, efficiency, cost control and frequent quality control checks are the main drivers of each step in the manufacturing process and allow the company to produce high-quality stock in a fraction of the time of its competitors.

“We are able to continue to grow not only because of our forward-looking philosophy, but also because of the people we employ,” Tandy continued. “When we started, it was Dave, myself and our wives, Laurie and Angie, crammed into a hybrid barn-garage behind the house. As the business has expanded, we went from 30 employees in 2020, to 45 people in 2021, to 65 people in 2022. By the end of the year, we will nearly double that number of employees. We are currently running our day shifts seven days a week and a night shift Monday through Thursday.

“We strive to be a place where our people expect to come to work every day,” Tandy continued. “We offer incentives, bonuses, a great environment where it’s nice to come to work every day.

“Currently, we employ many military veterans, as well as a handful of people with disabilities who were referred to us by Project SEARCH. In our area, Project SEARCH is a program where the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services has partnered with the Huntsville Hospital locally to provide real life work experience combined with employment training and independent living skills for help youth with significant disabilities make successful transitions. to productive adult life in the area. It’s been fabulous.”
