This sighting was shared with LatestSightings.com from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park by safari guide, Dave Pusey.

“We were in the Mata Mata road park when we filmed this sighting. We love the Kalahari because you can always expect the unexpected to happen on a daily basis. However, this day was very special. We had already seen a pit viper on the trail, prior to this sighting, and had seen plenty of signs of snake activity in the soft sand after a bit of rain, so we weren’t surprised to see a Cape Cobra on the side of the trail. however, it seemed to be very tense and ready to attack, and then we noticed that the ground squirrel was only inches from the cobra.

“We couldn’t believe our eyes as this scene unfolded before us, and after initially fearing for the ground squirrel, we were amazed at the squirrel’s bravery and speed and how it was irritating the deadly snake. The squirrel kept crawling towards the snake and just as it got close enough, the snake would lunge forward and bite the squirrel. The squirrel, however, reacted too quickly and jumped out of sting range every time!

“I have been traveling to Kgalagadi for many years, and never thought I would ever see anything like this, this was truly a once in a lifetime sighting.

“We waited for the fascinating story to end and after about half an hour the snake took cover in some bushes and finally found a hole to slither into. The female squirrel then began to relax and went about her business. Most likely the squirrel had pups nearby and just wanted the cobra to get away from the area.”
