Sport Fishing Industry Highlights Importance of Fish Access and Conservation

ASA’s Southeast Fisheries Policy Director, Martha Guyas, highlighted the key issues affecting recreational saltwater fishing in the Southeast.

Yesterday he American Sport Fishing Association (ASA) Southeast Fisheries Policy Director Martha Guyas testified on the importance of sound fisheries policy before the US House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries.

The oversight hearing, titled “Benefits and Access: The Need for Multiple Uses of Water in Resources,” included a discussion of the multiple needs and benefits of water resources in the United States, including fisheries and fisheries-related issues. . Guyas began by showing the many ways that fishing benefits conservation, jobs, and the US economy.

“In 2021, 52.4 million people went fishing in the US, creating 826,000 jobs and contributing $129 billion to the economy,” Guyas said. “Through the purchase of fishing licenses, excise taxes and direct donations, the recreational fishing community contributes approximately $1.7 billion to the conservation of aquatic resources each year. I am confident to say that no other user group does as much to ensure that our nation’s waterways and fisheries are healthy and accessible to the public.”

Guyas continued his testimony by focusing on four key issues related to fishing access and conservation in the southeastern United States: Gulf Red Snapper, South Atlantic Red Snapper, North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Speed Restrictions and shark predation.

Martha’s testimony begins at 44:49.

At Gulf Red Snapper, Guyas noted that while state management has led to increased recreational access, and recent science has found red snapper to be three times more abundant than previously thought, challenges remain. Several states are facing significant reductions in catch limits due to discrepancies between state and federal catch estimates, and overall catch limits have not improved significantly despite our better understanding of red snapper abundance.

After turning to the South Atlantic red snapper issues, Guyas mentioned that while the rebuilding of the Atlantic red snapper fishery is a success story, managers have yet to provide reasonable catch opportunities for anglers. According to Guyas, “Questions have been raised by SAFMC, scientists and the public as to whether the data and assumed reference points in the stock assessment lead us to the incorrect conclusion that this fishery is being overexploited and overfished.”

When the audience highlighted NOAA’s 10-knot boat speed restriction to try to protect the North Atlantic right whale, Guyas pointed out how slower travel can cause anglers to cancel fishing trips and that while the ASA supports efforts to protect whales, this rule was quickly approved by NOAA and has significant flaws. Guyas noted: “Right whales deserve better protection, but sweeping and blanket speed restrictions that are not based on the best available science are not the solution.”

The final issue highlighted by Guyas was shark predation, which occurs when a shark eats or damages a hooked fish before the fish is landed. Guyas highlighted ASA’s position on managing shark predation, noting: “We support a variety of methods to protect sharks in four pillars: education, management, policy and research.” Guyas further stated: “ASA believes that fisheries managers need to move beyond identifying challenges with shark interactions and start working collectively on solutions.”

ASA thanks Subcommittee Chairman Cliff Bentz (R-Ore.) and Ranking Member Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) for holding this important hearing. The full video of the hearing can be found here. For more information on each of the previous issues highlighted by Guyas, visit ASA’s Current Issues page.

REVEALING THE “MEGAJAWS”

THE REEL TO PUT THE FISH IN THE WELL

Veteran Oklahoma tournament bass angler James Elam knows the fishing tackle. When money is on the line, he relies on KastKing’s MegaJaws Elite Baitcasting Reel to put big bass in his hatchery.

“I really love this reel because it comes in both moderate and fast gear ratios, making it extremely versatile for my fishing.” says the 36-year-old Tulsa angler with more than $750,000 in career tournament winnings from him. “This reel casts far; it really shells a lure a long way. That’s important when you’re catching scary fish in clear water, and you can’t get close to them to tempt a bite.”

The reel’s Auto Adjust Magnetic Braking (AMB) system rarely backs down as the system automatically adjusts the reel brakes based on reel speed. This allows for more casting without worrying about line snarl.

KastKing’s MegaJaws Elite Baitcasting Reel is available in a 7.2:1 retrieve ratio and a 9.2:1 retrieve ratio. Elam loves the faster retrieve reel when fishing something slow for bass.

“It really helps when a fish explodes on a LIVETARGET Frog or topwater, and I have to get the cast back on the fish as quickly as possible,” he explains. “That high-speed retrieve (9 to 1) gets my lure back early, so I can get that bait back on the bass before the fish leaves or gets cold from the frenzy of hitting.”

The slower retrieve 7.2:1 MegaJaws Elite Baitcasting Reel is Elam’s choice when ripping plugs or using hard lures, artificial vibrators and swim baits.

“It’s easy to overload a lure with a high-speed reel, so the slower retrieve ratio is ideal for many maneuvers,” he explains. “It’s also my favorite when using lipless crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and speakers. The reel is also my choice when the water is cold or there is a cold front, and the slower retrieves are the best.”

Although Elam uses his MegaJaws Elite Baitcasting Reels as a standard bait cast and retrieve caster, he is second to none for flipping and casting.

“The reel has a very useful rotary switch that allows for hard, fast shots without having to turn the handle,” says the Major League Fishing pro with seven years of tournament experience and three big-money event wins. “Turn on the rotary switch, depress the thumb stick and let your line out; release it and the line stops; that’s vital for catching big fish in tough cover.”

MegaJaws Elite Baitcasting reels are lightweight and sit well in the hand for easy palming of the reel.

Elam uses the entire fluorocarbon line on their MegaJaws Elite, from 12 to 20 lbs. The only exception is when fishing very dense cover in Florida or other southern states where large bass are found in overgrown jungles. In those places, use a braided line of the same pound test, often with a fluorocarbon leader.

Choosing a rod to use with MegaJaws Elite Baitcasting Reels is easy for Elam.

“Any of the rods in the KastKing Speed Demon Pro series are great,” he says. “I use them all from 6-foot-10 to 7-foot-11, depending on how I’m fishing where and with what line and lures. They pair perfectly with MegaJaws Elite baitcasting reels.”

FEATURES OF THE MEGAJAWS ELITE BAITCASTING REEL

  • CNC machined aluminum frame
  • Low profile, palm-friendly design.
  • Self-adjusting magnetic brake system
  • Close Up Fishing Flippin Switch
  • Digi-Cut 7075 Aerospace Grade Aluminum Gears
  • Right or left handed 7.2:1 (Dark Galaxy) and 9.1:1 (Predator Red)

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FISHING PLIERS

UNMATCHED POWER AND PRECISION WITH SMITH CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Choosing the right fishing pliers can be a more complicated task than it seems at first glance. In today’s market, with so many different options, different features and materials help complicate this seemingly easy task.

The first question you should ask yourself is, what is my budget? Where are you going to use these pliers? And finally, what are the features you need to achieve your fishing goals?

There is such a diverse selection of pliers that it can be an interesting decision. It’s all too easy to end up owning multiple sets of pliers and swapping them out depending on what tasks you’re doing, where you’ll be fishing, and what your needs might be for any given trip.

If you are one of those anglers who does not enjoy just one type of fishing, this question becomes much more interesting. One day you could be fishing for tuna and other pelagics offshore, the next day chasing bass and stripers from a kayak, the next stalking shallow flats for redfish, or even a summer foray into a mountain meadow to fish for trout with fly. Each of these scenarios can really call for a very different fishing plier.

Here is a list of things to think about when selecting a pair of fishing pliers for such a diverse set of possible uses.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL: This is probably one of the first decisions you have to make about your new pliers. If you spend a lot of time fishing in saltwater, choosing a plier that is not made from non-corrosive materials or coated with something to inhibit rust will be a poor decision. With the proliferation of affordable but very high quality aluminum pliers, this step should be a piece of cake!

CHARACTERISTICS: This is an easy place to get buried in the brush, especially considering how densely packed many of today’s fishing pliers are with cool features. The questions that should be given greater relevance are these. Do you need side cutters? Do you need spring loaded handles? Should the jaws be smooth or serrated? Do you need a cover to hold them? And finally, do you need split ring openers?

JAWS LENGTH: This may seem silly at first glance, but it comes down to a few simple things. Are the fish you are targeting known for swallowing hooks where you might have to dig a lure deep from inside their mouth? And more importantly, does your quarry have sharp dentures? Saltwater almost always seems to require pliers with longer, pointier jaws!

USING YOUR PLIERS: This too may seem simple until you consider things like this. Using pliers to work on a boat deck, panfish with the kids, or rig bluewater rigs in preparation for your next foray into the high seas? Each of those scenarios requires a very different product.

BUDGET: How much do you have to spend? If you’re primarily freshwater fishing with the family, a fancy set of rigging tongs probably isn’t the place to invest your hard-earned cash. Conversely, if you’re mounting marlin lures on the back of a new Viking Sportfisher, cheap pegs aren’t the best option.

Here are some great options from Smith’s Consumer Products that meet the needs mentioned above:
