Bear Forest Knives lends its name to its newest offering to introduce: The Bear. Just don’t call him Junior. The strong sheath knife captures the spirit of the butcher knives carried by the ‘old’ mountain men.
Rustic in appearance, this medium-sized belt knife can be used as a hunting knife or for general/camping lumber. The Bear features a 4.5-inch 80CrV2 high carbon steel blade designed for toughness and ease of sharpening. The polished acid wash finish appears aged and will be enhanced as a natural patina forms.
The saber sharpening keeps the blade thin enough to excel in the cut, while the extra meat near the tenderloin makes the 0.125” (1/8”) thick blade tough and tough as a bear. There’s no need to be shy about bashing the bear through hardwood in the absence of an axe. The added 90 degree spine scrapes tinder and an iron bar with authority. And peel carrots and potatoes for a true country kitchen.
Comfort first. If you are concerned about knives with small handles, this is the one for YOU. A nearly 5-inch handle offers plenty of room for oversized, gloved hands. The oval cross section accommodates anyone concerned with hot spots from sharp angles and finger grooves. For a sure textured grip, wear The Bear proudly sporting black or green burlap micarta, or keep it natural with red oak flakes.
For a change of pace, Bear Forest Knives chose leather pants to complement The Bear’s essence. The illustrious brown leather sheath is manufactured by JRE Industries and includes a Dangler & Ferro Loop. Like The Bear, JRE Industries is made in the USA.
Characteristics:
Overall Length: 9.375″
Blade Length: 4.5″
Thickness: .125” (1/8”)
Steel: 80CrV2 High Carbon
90 degree spine
Grind: saber
Finish: Acid Wash
Handle Scales: Red Oak, Black Burlap, or Green Burlap
Sheath: JRE Industries leather sheath (with hanger and iron loop) brown
Made in the USA
MSRP: $179.99
Bear Forest knives are made from high carbon steel and will tarnish/rust if not cared for properly, we recommend a good oil and regular maintenance.

Another source of trout fishing fun is available in Nebraska. The Nebraska Park and Game Commission is scheduling the release of rainbow trout into waters across the state.
This will provide anglers and families, especially on city ponds and lakes, with additional angling opportunities for this popular species.
It begins on March 11, the opening day of Trout Lake at Two Rivers State Recreation Area in Douglas County. All trout caught in this lake must be harvested and not released. Anglers must first purchase a daily trout tag for $6 at the park office. Each tag is good for a daily bag limit of four trout. One person may have up to three tags per day and 12 trout in possession. An adult angler may have two children under the age of 16 fishing under the authority of his tag, but the group bag limit is still limited to four trout per tag.
Trout Lake (Lake No. 5) will be open from 7 am to sunset daily. Anglers, except residents under the age of 16, must have a Nebraska fishing license. All vehicles entering the park must have a park entry permit. Anglers who own trout on any other lake in Two Rivers must also have a trout tag. Anglers will be able to use one fishing rod and one reel each.
Adults can enjoy it, but trout fishing is also a great way to introduce kids to fishing, because simple and inexpensive equipment can be used.
“Rainbow trout are especially good for new anglers because they easily bite through anything, even corn, bread pieces or worms, and are easy and safe to handle,” said Larry Pape, Game and Parks aquatic education specialist. “You can use a simple spin-cast combo or a spinning rod and have a fun day fishing for trout.”

Invitations to Bassmaster Elite Series and Classic 2024 up for grabs; St. Croix Rewards is also available
The 2023 St. Croix Bassmaster Open Series kicks off this week in Division 1 action in Lake Eufaula, Alabama, where a field of 225 boats, professionals, and accompanying co-anglers will compete for a total payout of more than $250,000. Also at stake is an invitation to the winner of the professional division tournament to the 2024 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic, as well as EQ points that could result in an invite to fish for the coveted 2024 Bassmaster Elite Series. The competition will take held at Lakepoint State Park Marina, March 2-4.
Current forecasts for Eufaula call for water temperatures to be around 60 degrees by tournament time, which should work well for a strong pre-spawn/spawn shallow water pattern and heavy bags.
St. Croix Rewards Program
St. Croix Rod would like to remind all pros and co-anglers who fish any 2023 St. Croix Bassmaster Open event that they can earn even more with St. Croix Rewards, as long as they are fishing at least one St. Croix rod.
The St. Croix Rod Rewards Program pays an additional $1,000 to any registered professional angler who wins a St. Croix Bassmaster Open tournament fishing St. Croix rods, OR $500 to the top 10 registered professional angler who has ever fished St. Croix rods.
Similarly, the program awards an additional $500 to any registered co-angler who wins a St. Croix Bassmaster Open tournament angling St. Croix rods, OR $250 to the highest ranked registered among the top 10 co-anglers angling St. Croix Bassmaster Open. St Croix.
Anglers must register during on-site registration prior to the tournament to be eligible to earn St. Croix Rewards.
anglers to follow
A variety of St. Croix staff members are expected to fish the Division 1 St. Croix Bassmaster Opens event at Lake Eufaula this week, including Hunter Bland, Chad Grigsby, Bobby Lanham, Trey McKinney, Kenny Mittelstaed, Ron Ryals and Dawson. Wisner.
Kenny Mittelstaed of Minnetonka, Minnesota, has been fishing the Opens since 2018 and has committed to fishing all nine events this season in hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Elites. “My wife and I live full time in our motor home and travel across the country to participate in bass tournaments,” says Mittelstaed. “I am super excited to start the season at Eufaula Lake in Alabama. I had never fished there before which I think is really exciting. My favorite thing in the world is launching my boat in a whole new place and figuring out how to catch a bass in unfamiliar waters.” Mittelstaed says he expects dirty water and lots of motor fishing in less than 10 feet of water in Eufaula. “I know my chatterbaits will work out on my 7’2″ HM Mojo Bass Glass rod,” he says. “I’m super excited for this season long journey and all the ups and downs that come along with it!”
Maple Grove, Minnesota angler Chad Grigsby is a familiar face and talent in bass circles. He has been fishing nationally full time for 20 years: 18 on the FLW/MLF tour and two seasons in Bassmaster Elites. Grigsby says he has two basic goals for angling the Opens this season. “I’m fishing all nine events in hopes that I can finish in the top nine in points and qualify for the elites again,” he says. “The other goal would be to win one of the nine events to get into the Bassmaster Classic.” Grigsby is optimistic about the event in Eufaula this week. “I think it will be very good. The water is stable and warming up and it looks like we’re going to have pretty good weather all week. I look forward to having my favorite St. Croix rod in my hand all week: the 7’6” Legend-X MHMF, flipping and casting off every tree stump or piece of deck that gets in my way! It should be a good time.”
Originally from Westminster, Maryland, Dawson Wisner joined the United States Army in 2017 and shipped out to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he found his love and passion for tournament bass fishing. “After my time in the service, with $500 in my pocket, I packed up my Jeep and headed to Palatka, Florida to live my bass fishing dream,” says Wisner.
Entering his fourth season on the Bassmaster Opens trail as a co-angler, Wisner has racked up multiple top-tens and has come close to winning more than a few times. “My main goal is to keep a positive mental attitude and come out of this year with a win,” says Wisner, who plans to fish all three Division 1 events this season. “I tend to do my best when challenged with a body of water I’ve never been in, so I always look forward to fishing new spots. I really need to catch them this week, I’m behind on my rent and I don’t want to come home to an angry landlord! he adds.
Wisner faces some unique challenges as a co-angler. Mainly, he has no control over where he is fishing in the back of the boat. “There are a few different techniques that I think will work well for me this week, but the main player is going to be a jerkbait,” says Wisner. If my boater is fishing stumps or brush piles, I can cast a jerkbait behind the boat and hook up with cruising or suspended fish. I like a jerkbait rod with a bit of backbone, so my number one choice is a St. Croix Legend Elite that casts 6’10” with medium power and extra fast action. The sensitivity of that rod is another key feature for detecting subtle bite on slack line.”
Hunter Bland, a St. Croix staff member and National Safe Boating Ambassador from Williston, Florida, is beginning his sixth season at the Bassmaster Open. He plans to fish all three Division 1 events this season, hopefully winning one and earning his ticket to the 2024 Bassmaster Classic. “I’m excited to start the year in Alabama with some beautiful warm weather ahead,” he says. “The fish should be in multiple stages, so I’m looking to keep an open mind this week. The fish are on the move and it will be important to make key adjustments to stay with the fish as the week progresses.” In addition to winning an event, Bland says his goals this season are to fish clean, stay positive and work hard. “Every day is a blessing and a gift, so no matter how the cards fall, I am extremely grateful to be here racing Lake Eufaula this week,” says Bland. “I have never been to Lake Eufaula, but I am looking to play to my strengths. I hope to be swimming a Missile Mini Swim Jig on a Legend Tournament Bass 7’3” MH WORKHORSE rod or casting a babble on a 7’2” HM RIP-N-CHATTER” rod.

EDGEFIELD, SC — The National Wild Turkey Federation has awarded Richard Mann the Mentor of the Year award for his commitment to the R3 movement, bringing new hunters to the field, and being a determined and passionate resource for those interested in venturing into the woods. .
“Honestly, I got a lump in my throat when the president of the Washington State Chapter, Russ McDonald, told me [I was Mentor of the Year]Mann said. “While I don’t mentor for recognition, there is something special about peer recognition. For me, there is a team of people who make what I do possible: my wife, Liliane, who puts up with my obsession with these birds; my hunting companions of 33 years, with whom I have shared lessons learned in the field; large landowners who trust me and generously share their property; and the trainees (and parents) who place their trust in a complete stranger.
“There’s nothing like the look on a new hunter’s face when the roost wakes up to daylight, a bird lands 10 feet away, or that gobbler answers a call. I know you are hooked! The harvest, as long as it happens, is the icing on the cake. Mentoring, when possible, should be an ongoing process, with the goal of passing on knowledge and skills so that a student can do it on their own.”
Mann accepted the Mentor of the Year award for 50 years of the NWTFhe 47th anniversary celebrationhe NWTF annual convention and sports extravaganza, sponsored by Mossy Oak.
A member of the NWTF for 30 years, Mann has been instrumental in developing and sustaining hunter recruiting and mentoring in Washington, helping to establish and orchestrate the first Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife turkey mentoring camps. /NWTF in 2015, which continue to this day. day.
The state chapter relies on him for all aspects of classroom presentations on hunting. Mann’s background in wildlife management and biology allows him to explain hunting, wildlife behaviors, and conservation in an understandable yet comprehensive way.
His field experience and enthusiasm for turkey hunting translates to the trainee/students and increases their enthusiasm for hunting. The people he mentors leave with the confidence that they can go out and try turkey hunting on their own, and in most cases, past trainees follow up the following spring to discuss their first solo hunt.
In addition, Mann has held various positions within the Washington State chapter of the NWTF, including treasurer, Save the Hunt coordinator, and vice president.
“We commend Rich’s enthusiasm for turkey hunting and his desire to share it with others, not out of recognition but out of genuine passion,” said NWTF Co-Executive Director Kurt Dyroff. “His talent and dedication are incredible and we are proud to recognize Rich with the prestigious Mentor of the Year award.”

The court refused to hear arguments from landowners who challenge the public’s right to access waterways in the state.
WASHINGTON – Public land and water users won a major victory for public access today with the announcement by the US Supreme Court declining to consider arguments brought by New Mexico landowners who would have challenged access to water public in the Land of Enchantment.
The Supreme Court denied a petition by Chama Troutstalkers LLC and Z&T Cattle Company LLC seeking a review of a September decision by the New Mexico Supreme Court that upheld the public’s right to walk or ford stream beds that cross privately owned land. This ruling opinion followed a unanimous New Mexico court decision in March 2022 to strike down a regulation that allowed property owners to close off access to streams that flow through their properties.
The Supreme Court receives thousands of such requests, called “petitions for certiorari,” each year, but accepts only a small number. In their petition, the landowners file a lawsuit against the three groups that won the New Mexico case: the New Mexico chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, the Adobe Whitewater Club of New Mexico and the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, and They claim that tearing down the New Mexico current access regulation was a “take.”
Joel Gay, former president and policy coordinator for the New Mexico chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, praised the Supreme Court’s decision.
“The highest court in the land has ruled,” Gay said, “and, like the New Mexico Supreme Court before it, has summarily dismissed the baseless arguments of a handful of New Mexico private landowners who would prohibit fishermen, boaters and other waters that have been public since time immemorial.
“The judges have sent a simple message to these privileged landowners: that they have to share,” Gay continued. “The waters of New Mexico have always been and should always be open to all. It’s written in our state constitution as plain as day. With this most recent decision, we hope riparian landowners will accept the facts and remove haphazardly placed barriers to public access in public creeks throughout the state. And if they don’t, we hope our governor and the Department of Game and Fish have the backbone to force the issue.”
NM BHA and co-plaintiffs had filed a lawsuit in 2020 asking the court to strike down the anti-access regulation as unconstitutional. The state supreme court decision struck down the so-called Non-Navigability Rule and overturned previously adopted closures on several New Mexico streams.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a victory for New Mexico, a victory for arroyo access and a victory for public land users everywhere,” said Land Tawney, BHA President and CEO. “Make no mistake: the forces are constantly working to deny citizens our right to access the lands and waters that belong to all of us. Our work will never end to retain those opportunities, but today we celebrate it.”
Tawney further stated, “With the Supreme Court’s decision, BHA remains fully committed to working with all stakeholders in New Mexico to find solutions to access challenges that honor the resource, educate the public on wise use practices, and balance public and private property rights.
The New Mexico Constitution, which is based in part on Spanish and Mexican laws derived from the state’s colonial era and differs from other state constitutions, declares that all waters belong to the public. The state Supreme Court detailed that right of access more than 70 years ago.
