NWTF chapters receive national conservation awards

EDGEFIELD, SC — The NWTF presented an Acreage Award and a Partnership Award for outstanding achievement in regional grassroots conservation efforts.

Representatives from the Alabama, Indiana and Tennessee state chapters accepted their awards during 50 years of the NWTFhe 47th anniversary celebrationhe annual convention and sports extravaganza, sponsored by Mossy Oak.

The achievements of this year’s winners include:

NWTF Alabama State Chapter – Acre Award:

The NWTF awards this award to the state chapter that achieves the most acreage conserved or improved through direct financial contributions from the Super Fund and other funding sources in the prior year.

In 2022, the NWTF Alabama NWTF Chapter conserved or improved more acreage than any other state.

Indiana and Tennessee State Chapters: Association Award:

When the NWTF’s Tennessee State Chapter held its annual Super Fund meeting in 2022, it had more funding requests than funds to distribute. One particularly important project that the state wanted to fund, but didn’t have the extra money for, was a state-of-the-art wild turkey research project. Through an approach never done before, the Indiana State Chapter offered to fund the project for the Tennessee State Chapter, as the research seeks to improve understanding of the ecology of the eastern wild turkey as a whole.

The research will investigate fertilization of the ovum and evidence of early embryonic mortality in wild turkey eggs collected from various locations in the eastern United States. This will be a cooperative study with several state wildlife agencies that have expressed enthusiastic interest in the study.

“Our state chapters and their volunteer leadership never cease to amaze me,” said NWTF Co-Executive Director Kurt Dyroff. “It is their innovation, collaboration and dedication that has enabled us to achieve many milestones. It is an honor to recognize the Indiana and Tennessee State Chapters with the Save the Habitat Award, as well as the Alabama State Chapter with the Acreage Award, at our 50thhe anniversary celebration.”

Perrotte receives national recognition as best communicator

EDGEFIELD, SC—Virginia’s Ken Perrotte received the Tom Kelly Communicator of the Year Award from the National Wild Turkey Federation for his ability to share the story of NWTF heritage hunting and conservation efforts across the country.

“I am grateful and honored to receive this recognition, particularly when there are so many deserving communicators,” said Perrotte. “It’s especially meaningful to me since this is the 50thhe anniversary of NWTF, an organization founded in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where I have been writing outdoor columns for the local newspaper for the past 25 years. When I was young, I dreamed of one day sharing stories about the people, places, and passions of our outdoor lifestyle. I still marvel from time to time that I can do this. It is one of the greatest joys of my life.

“Luckily, turkeys and turkey hunters offer plenty of material for outdoor writers. And the NWTF family is blessed with incredible and passionate members and supporters, who communicate through word and action their dedication to the mission and to their fellow members. Sharing stories about the lifestyle we love, that amazing bird we treasure, and the importance of the conservation ethic that underpins it all is so important. I accept this recognition on behalf of all of you.”

Throughout his decades-long career as an outdoor writer, Perrotte has distinguished himself as a stalwart conservationist, understanding that without conservation, outdoor opportunities would be negligible, and he is well-versed in communicating that message around the world.

Perrotte currently serves as Conservation Field Editor for the National Wild Turkey Federation, South Atlantic Flyway Migration Alerts Editor for Ducks Unlimited, Contributing Editor for Shooting Industry, and a regular contributor to Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, and Salt magazines. Water Sportsman, and The Hunting Wire. As a writer, editor, and photographer, Perrotte has published more than 2,200 articles and has won nearly 100 awards for writing, photography, website design, and management (related to the outdoor industry).

It’s not uncommon to see his articles in national publications where he tells the NWTF story. Perrotte was recently awarded by the Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Association for his call from turkey feature “Outside City Limits,” which won Best of Show and highlighted the importance of mentoring, hunting access, inclusion and diversity, all critical components of the future of the NWTF.

Perrotte is proud of his involvement with the NWTF and is happy to showcase the organization and its success whenever there is an opportunity, in his award-winning outdoor walker website, through his work with USA Today’s Hunt and Fish publication, or through many other media channels with which he is involved.

“Fulfilling our mission is critical, but to amplify these efforts, we must effectively communicate them to new audiences,” said NWTF Co-Executive Director Jason Burckhalter. “We are proud to honor Ken for his deep involvement with the NWTF and his commitment to communicating who we are and what we do to the masses.”

Stafford presented the National Lifetime Achievement Award

EDGEFIELD, SC — The National Wild Turkey Federation presented Jimmy Stafford, retired Wild Turkey and Small Game Coordinator for the Louisiana Department of Fish and Wildlife, with the Wayne Bailey Lifetime Achievement Award.

The NWTF announced Stafford’s award during the organization’s 50th anniversaryhe 47th anniversary celebrationhe NWTF annual convention and sports extravaganza, sponsored by Mossy Oak.

The Wayne Bailey Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a wildlife biologist, trapper or manager who has dedicated his or her career to the wild turkey and played a significant role in turkey restoration and management.

Stafford is a quintessential example of a state wildlife agency biologist who dedicated a career to wild turkey stewardship, as exemplified by Wayne Bailey.

For more than three decades, Stafford worked at nearly every level of conservation in his home state of Louisiana. His turkey trapping skills were an asset during the final phases of Louisiana’s restocking program and his hands-on management as a technician early in his career improved numerous acres for turkeys and other wildlife.

Since the late 1980s, LDWF has conducted one of the most extensive gobbler banding projects in the nation annually, and Stafford was instrumental in the success of that effort from its inception.

Stafford’s career culminated in his time as manager of the statewide wild turkey program, which allowed him to direct all aspects of turkey management, research and regulation in Louisiana. During his time in this position, the LDWF partnered with Louisiana State University to conduct several important studies that have had a significant impact on the understanding of the species.

Most notably, Stafford was a contributor to some of the early work that switched from VHF to GPS-based telemetry, which revolutionized wild turkey research and made GPS the standard in the field.

Even after leaving LDWF, Stafford couldn’t let go of his dedication to the iconic bird. He spent his early years of retirement writing “Louisiana Wild Turkeys: History, Science, Management and Hunting.” This book is one of his best of its kind and allowed Stafford to pour his lifelong knowledge of turkeys into a special blend of historical information, basic biology, practical management advice, and humble appreciation for the bird and its hunt. This work is accessible to a lay audience, yet authoritative enough for a professional’s shelf, and may well constitute the crowning achievement of an already impressive career.

“From research to habitat management to hunter advocacy, Jimmy’s dedicated career has advanced our understanding of wild turkeys and impacted our favorite game bird in all of the great state of Louisiana,” said co-director NWTF executive Kurt Dyroff. “We are proud to honor Jimmy’s immense legacy with the prestigious Wayne Bailey Lifetime Achievement Award.”
