Livelys wins National Conservation Award

EDGEFIELD, SC — Gerald and Terri Lively of Illinois received national recognition from the NWTF as recipients of the Roger M. Latham Sportsman Wild Turkey Service Award for their dedication to the mission of the NWTF.

“Terri and I are honored to have been shortlisted for the Roger Latham Award,” said Gerald Lively. “The NWTF has given us the opportunity to pursue our passion of introducing new people, especially youth, to hunting and the outdoors. We love to witness the excitement and appreciation they achieve on that first hunt. We also feel that these kinds of experiences are the best way to further the goals and mission of the NWTF. After all, how can you convince someone to support your position when they don’t understand what you’re arguing for?

The NWTF presents the Roger M. Latham Sportsman Wild Turkey Service Awards to members who are not employed as professional wildlife managers but who have made significant contributions to wild turkey conservation.

Over the decades, the couple’s combined efforts have helped carry out the mission of the NWTF in Illinois in many ways, including serving as state chapter treasurer, as well as current state chapter president. They also administered the state calendar raffle and served on the State of Illinois Super Fund Committee, for which they were instrumental in helping to create more detailed criteria for ranking Super Fund projects. They manage one of the state’s two JAKES Take Aim trailers and help run the 501 auction program at the state awards event and their local event. They have remained committed to the Illinois Outdoor Resources Federation and are willing to intervene in the policy arena when necessary. They also serve on the committee to select the Illinois Officer of the Year Award.

In addition to contributing at the state level, they also stay engaged at a high level in their local chapter. Their JAKES events are always successful, both in the number of youth participating and the activities they help provide.

They have donated their time and merchandise from their taxidermy business to a multitude of fundraisers and auctions are always positive representatives of the hunting and conservation community. For example, two Land of Lincoln scholarship recipients were awarded for conducting postgraduate research on the effect of buffalo mosquitoes on the wild turkey population. Gerald and Terri Lively hosted them and helped with the research simply out of altruistic passion.

“Gerald and Terri are a dynamic conservation duo,” said NWTF Co-Executive Director Jason Burckhalter. “For their decades of fulfilling the mission of the NWTF, in all its facets, we are pleased to honor them with a Roger Latham Award.”

Foster Receives National Recognition from the National Wild Turkey Federation

EDGEFIELD, SC — The NWTF honored Joe Foster, President of the NWTF Idaho State Chapter, with the new Innovation Award for his exceptionally creative strategies and novel approaches that fostered positive impacts in conservation, outreach and education .

“I am honored to be recognized for innovation by the NWTF Board of Directors,” said Foster. “The NWTF has supported our efforts to provide wild turkey learning to educators, numerous habitat projects, and many other activities that help us achieve goals while building community through conservation.”

Foster accepted the NWTF 50th Anniversary Award for Innovationhe 47th anniversary celebrationhe NWTF annual convention and sports extravaganza, sponsored by Mossy Oak.

Foster has been an effective leader for the NWTF’s Idaho State Chapter, rallying people from the Panhandle to the Columbia Plateau and basins and valleys to expand the NWTF’s mission.

Western states are large and communities are scattered. However, Foster has fostered a dedicated community of conservationists who are willing to go the distance, both literally and figuratively.

Foster excels at building relationships and partnerships and has forged a productive connection with Idaho Fish and Game. That relationship has spawned a number of conservation jobs by volunteers, interns, and departments.

Foster also built a tree patio in his backyard and gave the NWTF access to take cuttings, surplus and other inexpensive trees and shrubs from a variety of sources and use them as needed. Foster’s Southeast Idaho tree yard is a 20-by-30-foot tall fenced space created through Eagle Scout Projects seven years ago. The yard produces over 500 trees each year for habitat projects that benefit all wildlife throughout southeast Idaho. Trees are propagated from locally sourced seeds, cuttings, and collected cuttings. The conservative estimated annual inventory value is $5,000 to $10,000. All tree yard maintenance, weeding, and watering is done by volunteers.

Foster’s commitment has set the stage for the NWTF’s success in obtaining several Community Challenge Grants from the IDFG Commissioners for the NWTF’s Pocatello chapter to carry out habitat improvement projects at the Portneuf, Georgetown WMAs. and Blackfoot River to plant trees and shrubs to improve wildlife habitat.

Foster’s innovative approach to conservation can also be seen in his work procuring and implementing the use of water boxes. These boxes increase tree survival, use 90% less water, and dramatically reduce staff time needed to establish trees and transport water, increasing the ability to plant trees that benefit wildlife habitat.

In addition, Foster recently collaborated with IDFG on another innovative idea and received a 2022 IDFG Commissioners Community Challenge Grant to build a habitat trailer, which will be built and used by IDFG and volunteer conservation groups to facilitate days of habitat field in local wildlife management areas.

In addition, Foster also realizes the importance of public support for wildlife. The NWTF Idaho State Chapter supports the IDFG Wild About Turkeys Project Workshop. This training for educators provides information on turkeys that can be used in all educational disciplines, such as teaching social studies, math, language arts, science, or outdoor education programs. The NWTF Idaho State Chapter purchases supplemental educational materials for participating educators.

“Having experienced it firsthand, I can say with certainty that all of our members in Idaho are exceptionally grateful for Joe’s efforts,” said NWTF Co-Executive Director Kurt Dyroff. “Joe’s ability to unite people for the greater good, along with his innovative approaches, has broadened our reach in the NWTF. We are proud to honor Joe for his work in fulfilling the mission of the NWTF.”

Hard neck and soft neck with Chestnut Hill Outdoor

The general goal of food plots and mast orchards is to attract deer and other wildlife by improving the land. Within that, responsible land managers often have more specific objectives. They understand the importance of sustainability and providing nutrition throughout the year. The more you provide, the more wildlife your land will attract; the more variety, the longer they will stay. The result is wildlife that is healthier and spends more time on the ground.

Food plots are one way to improve the landscape, but they are labor intensive and have a limited window of availability. Mast orchards offer a great alternative or supplement that can significantly widen the window of attraction. Once established, they continue to do so for the enjoyment of current and future generations of stewards of the land and the wildlife they support.

Providing a variety of hard and soft necks further expands that window of appeal. It’s what the folks at Chestnut Hill Outdoors call Dirt Wisdom, and they offer a variety of trees and shrubs selected to do just that.

Early summer is the growing season for both plants and wildlife. Young wildlife are plentiful, grow quickly, and need nutritious food. Early growers of soft stems, such as plums and blackberries, help them meet these needs.

Mid to late summer is a period of nutritional stress that often goes unrecognized. Nutritional demands are increasing for fast-growing young wildlife and the adults that support them, but herbaceous vegetation is maturing and dying. Summer fruits like blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and grapes help wildlife close this nutritional gap before the next one arrives.

As the seasons change, so do the nutritional requirements of wildlife. It’s time to start fattening up for the winter. That task becomes more manageable and you can start sooner with late summer/early fall mast species like persimmons, apples, and pears. They help nurture and sustain more wildlife until crucial hard-masted species like chestnuts and acorns begin to decline.

The hard mast is most popular with land managers and the wildlife they keep; the same dirty wisdom applies here too. The more variety you plant, the more effective your efforts will be.

Planting different varieties not only extends the availability of nutritious food over a longer period; it also allows you to use more of your land. For example, Shumard oaks grow best in moist, well-drained soil. In contrast, Nuttall oaks are much more tolerant of poorly drained soils, even in areas that experience intermittent flooding during the dormant season. They also shed their acorns later in the fall than many other oak species, sometimes as late as December and even January. Swamp white oaks also like to put down roots in moist soil and drop their acorns in early fall. Bog chestnut oak thrives in slightly drier soils, making them a good choice for the border between drier arable land and lowlands that are too wet to cultivate and plant. Sawtooth oaks are a favorite among mast horticulturists, as they mature quickly and produce prolific crops as early as September.

Last but not least is the Dunstan Chestnut. This variety, developed by Chestnut Hill Outdoors, provides a bountiful and nutritionally superior crop of large nuts that contain four times the carbohydrates, 2.5 times the protein, and only a fraction of the fat of a white oak acorn. Because they lack tannins, chestnuts are also sweeter and more attractive to wildlife.

Planting mast gardens is a great way to improve the landscape now and in the future. Applying the wisdom of the land by offering a variety of soft and hard masts increases the nutrition available to wildlife over an extended period, so your land can support healthier animals.

Chestnut Hill is the best place to buy your deer feed plot and attractants because they offer a great selection, their plants are bred specifically to attract deer, and they offer customers different sized plants at different growth levels. To ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from their products, they also provide good advice and instructions on proper planting and care.
