NRA Challenges ATF Brace Rule

Fairfax, Virginia – The National Rifle Association today announced the filing of a lawsuit backed and endorsed by the NRA challenging the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) illegal rule on stabilizer braces.

“ATF’s new definition for stabilizer braces is arbitrary. The office states that it will effectively decide on a case-by-case basis whether a firearm is subject to the NFA. All American gun owners risk facing possible felony charges at the whim of these bureaucrats and without any new statute being established. The NRA believes this rule will fail for the same reasons the shotgun rule failed: ATF can only apply federal statutes; you can’t rewrite them,” said Jason Ouimet, executive director of the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action.

Stabilizer clamps were designed to allow gun owners to operate certain firearms with one hand with more stability. The new ATF rule essentially says that the use of a stabilizer clamp with a pistol converts the firearm to a short-barreled rifle and must now be regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), which means you would be subject to registration, additional taxes, and long wait times for approval due to ATF’s long NFA processing times. Because of this rule, the millions of Americans who own a handgun and stabilizer brace, regardless of the style, caliber, or type of brace, must dispose of, modify, or register their firearms. If they do not comply, they will become criminals and face 10 years in prison and large fines.

According to the Congressional Research Service, between 10 and 40 million stabilizing orthotics are currently in circulation.

The main problem with the new rule is the lack of a clear definition of what is actually regulated. The language gives ATF the absolute power to decide on a case-by-case basis which firearms are and are not regulated.

“This rule demonstrates a clear abuse of power by the ATF,” Ouimet said. “They are clearly carrying out the anti-gun agenda of the Biden Administration and it has to stop. The NRA is throwing its full weight behind the fight against this illegal rule.”

The case is titled Firearms Regulatory Accountability Coalition, Inc., v. Merrick Garland and appeared in the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota. Other plaintiffs include: SB Tactical, B&T USA, Wounded Warrior Richard Cicero, and a 25-state coalition led by West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley, which also includes Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho. , Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.

About the National Rifle Association

Hawke® Optics, a world leader in quality sports optics that performs outstandingly on the field, will be at the NWTF Convention February 15-19, 2023 in Nashville, TN, (booth #2156). They have the latest and greatest turkey hunting shotgun optics that you will want to stop in and check out! Support these opticians at the show and be sure to enter to win a $4,000 hunting gear package from Hawke and industry partners while you’re at their booth, too.

“Hawke is not changing the game; We are changing the entire industry! It’s turkey hunting like never before,” said Paige Shipe, marketing manager for Hawke Optics. “Our new Turkey Dot scope sets a new standard for hunting performance. The Reflex Circle Dot Wide View didn’t even grab the attention of last year’s introduction, but with the addition of the new Turkey Dot, we blew everything you know about turkey hunting out of the water! They completely change the trajectory of the turkey market.”

The Hawke Optics Vantage IR 1-4×20 Turkey Dot Scope was designed from the ground up to be the best optics for turkeys. It uses Hawke’s new illuminated Turkey Dot reticle for extremely fast target acquisition. As a multi-powered scope, you can use it at 1x for reflex shooting when the bird is close. However, you can also zoom in at longer distances with up to 4x magnification. The new turkey scope has 4 inches of eye relief, capped low-profile ½ MOA turrets, and a new fast-acquisition glass-etched reticle with red and green multi-stage illumination. The 4 MOA illuminated center dot is surrounded by a circle that measures 10 inches at 25 yards, at 1x magnification. Non-illuminated floating posts at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock provide additional guidance and level confirmation for improved accuracy and quick target identification. Built on a 1-inch monotube chassis, it allows for a weight of less than 12 oz. It’s nitrogen purged, shockproof, waterproof and fogproof, and carries Hawke’s lifetime warranty, so it can handle whatever you throw at it while chasing down gobblers in any hunting condition.

For hunters looking for a reflex sight, look to the Hawke Reflex Circle Dot Wide View with 2 MOA Dot / 35 MOA Circle. This red dot sight has 25-layer multi-coated optics for clarity and eight brightness levels to suit your conditions. It has a long battery life with the included CR2023 battery, and the scope will go into standby mode if it detects that you have not moved for 5 minutes. Being a reflex sight, the eye relief is extremely generous, and the Weaver-rail mount allows you to position the scope where it best suits your shotgun and shooting style.

The NWTF program will be one of your last chances to enter Hawke’s $4,000 drawing. They have teamed up with six industry partners to offer a huge package of products. You do not have to be present to win, but you do have to participate in the NWTF show. This is an opportunity you don’t want to miss, so be sure to head over to booth #2156 for more information. Come visit us, get the latest turkey hunting equipment from Hawke Optics and be in the race for great prizes. See you at the show!

2023 Western Hunting & Conservation Expo closes after record tag sales and attendance raising nearly $14 million for conservation

Salt Lake City, Utah: The Western Hunting & Conservation Expo 2023 (Hunt Expo) closed on February 5 after four busy days with aisles packed with people browsing the 544 booths in more than 511,000 square feet of exhibit halls at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most notably, the event once again broke records by raising nearly $14 million from show passes, auctions, tag sales, and other fundraisers. Organized by the Mule Deer Foundation and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, the Western Hunting & Conservation Expo has become one of the nation’s leading hunting and conservation fundraisers.

“Being a part of this Western Hunting and Conservation Expo—being in the room when two different mule deer tags sold for the most auction tags ever—and knowing that those funds are going back into the ground for conservation was really something special. said Mule Deer Foundation President/CEO Joel Pedersen. “I am proud of the hard work of all those who made this year’s Expo a success and to know that we have created a must-see event for passionate hunters and the entire outdoor industry.”

The 2023 Hunt Expo evening events once again raised significant funds for conservation efforts. The Thursday night Super Banquet engaged a crowd of 1,100 in games and raffles, and the Friday and Saturday auctions drew sold-out crowds of nearly 2,000 each night. Perhaps most notable were the many record-breaking label sales at the Friday and Saturday night banquets, including the two highest prices ever for conservation auction labels. On Friday, February 3, Utah’s Antelope Island mule deer tag sold for $500,000, making it the best-selling conservation tag in history, but that record was held for less than 24 hours when the state tag for Arizona mule deer sold for $725,000 the next night. Also noteworthy was the Texas desert bighorn sheep tag sold at the Expo for the first time which grossed $175,000, far more than had been sold before. The Alberta, Canada Minister of Deer and Deer Special Licenses sold for $85,000 and $225,000, respectively. It’s important to note that most of the sale price of auction tags goes directly back to state and provincial wildlife agencies to use for habitat projects that benefit the species. For example, 100% of the Arizona tag is used by Arizona Game and Fish for mule deer conservation projects and 90% of the Texas bighorn sheep tag will be used in their bighorn sheep program. Additionally, most states have a comparable tag available for the draw that allows all hunters the chance of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Evening entertainment at the banquets included American Idol runner-up Hunter Girl on Thursday night, US Department of Agriculture Secretary Robert Bonnie and Medal of Honor recipient Clint Romesha, on Friday night, and music by Ned LeDoux on Saturday night.

“This year’s Western Hunting & Conservation Expo broke almost every record on the books,” said Troy Justensen, president of Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife. “The attendees, exhibitors and the rest of us were absolutely blown away by the energy and enthusiasm emanating from this year’s show. There’s nothing like it in the hunting industry, which is also proven by attendees who travel from virtually every state in the union and beyond to participate. We are already looking forward to making it even bigger and better next year.”

The 2024 Western Game and Conservation Expo will be held February 15-18 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Keep an eye on the WHCE website at www.huntexpo.com to plan your trip to next year’s event.

American Schaff makes Las Vegas history with Easton’s Ultimate Indoor Arrow

Montana’s Kris Schaff has achieved a rare and singular series of titles this season, dominating three of the most prestigious archery events with the winningest indoor arrow of all time: the Easton X7 series.

Wielding his Easton arrows, Schaff made his mark at the first major event of 2023, the Nimes European Indoor, blasting his way to the champion’s podium with a first-place finish at Europe’s biggest archery event. Less than a week later, she came close to repeating this success, taking second to Bodie Turner, also shooting Easton, at the Lancaster Classic event.

Last weekend, Kris achieved the dream of countless archery competitors with victory in the Open Compound event at the world’s largest and most competitive event in the sport: the 57th Vegas Shoot. In front of a crowd of thousands, Schaff relied on his Easton X27 to take home the $57,000 prize in the 26-competitor knockdown finals. With the field split down the middle in each grueling and stressful tiebreaker round, in the end, it was Kris who was left alone with nothing more than tens “inside X” to take the Las Vegas title.
