Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters EXPO to Showcase Decoy Carving and Painting Demonstrations

Pat Gregory and Rick Pierce, leading creators of duck decoys, will share tips and techniques

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — If you want to make a duck decoy, find a block of wood and cut out anything that doesn’t look like a duck. Ok, so it’s not that simple.

But making a lure doesn’t have to be incredibly difficult either. The easy solution to get started is to attend the 2023 Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters Expo taking place July 28-30 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Delta Waterfowl has organized a special booth at the Expo staffed by expert lure carvers Pat Gregory and Rick Pierce, who will conduct interactive demonstrations, share tips and techniques, and answer questions throughout the weekend.

“I’ll have some white cedar bodies and white pine heads in there with me, and I’ll be carving some canvases out of Delta Marsh and a few other species,” Gregory said. “I will also be painting decoys, so people can see the technique that goes into shooting real decoys. We’ll have chairs so people can come up and look and ask questions as we go along, both about the techniques and the story. What I do isn’t really that difficult or technical, so I hope at least a couple of people will go away thinking ‘I could do it myself’ and give it a try.”

Gregory, of Bloomington, Illinois, has been making decoys since 1984 and produces more than 100 birds a year. He has carved nearly every species of duck and geese found in North America, and he crafts his birds out of white pine, white cedar, and cork. He has twice been selected as a Master Carver by the Ward Foundation Museum of Collectible Lures and was the Featured Carver at the 2018 North American Vintage Decoy & Sporting Collectibles Show.

Pierce, a northern Illinois native living in Alexander, Arkansas, began carving lures in the 1990s. His carving style leans toward classic shot lures with clean body lines and varied head positions to convey movement and animation. . His lures are usually made of hollowed out white cedar, with cedar or basswood heads and painted in oil.

Pierce demoed at Expo 2022, and plans to bring his decoy carving bench to the event for hands-on learning.

“Delta’s Expo is a great mix of all things duck and duck hunting, from traditional to modern,” Pierce said. “It is an honor to be asked to demonstrate a unique American art form alongside another talented carver like Pat Gregory. And being able to do it in my home state of Arkansas is the icing on the cake.”

The decoy carving booth is just one of hundreds of exhibits attendees will discover filling the 80,000-square-foot showroom floor of The Duck Hunters Expo presented by Federal Premium Ammunition. The Expo’s many attractions include the Duck Dog Stage presented by Eukanuba and Lucky Duck, the Duck Hunters Stage presented by Benelli and the Delta Waterfowl Stage presented by BOSS Shotshells and First Lite. In addition, the Expo features a Dog and Duck Parade, the Call Makers Championship, the World Championship Reduction Duck Calling Contest, and the Great Duck Hunters Banquet.

Bow Spider Introduces Bold New Colors

Bow Spider, the fastest and easiest bow retrieval system on the market, today announced the introduction of bold new colors to its Bow Spider disc color line, allowing users more ways to express their personality and individual style within and off the field.

If you’re a competitive shooter, designing a room to hang your bow in, or want a bit of color in your pack, the new colors of lime green, orange, purple, and the recently introduced pink will do the trick. “Once you own or even see a Bow Spider in use, you quickly realize how easy it is to use and find so many places you can place your bow with the Bow Spider receiver,” said David Merrill, president and owner. “Our customers have been asking for an expanded color palette of Bow Spiders. We just reintroduced pink, which is working well, but we wanted to give you more options. We hope the new green, orange and purple colors will satisfy the individual creativity of our customer base.”

The Bow Spider concept is simple and revolves around a round, lightweight arch support that comes with a sturdy belt and long studs, allowing for multiple ways to secure your bow. An aluminum arm attaches to the bow riser and slides into a slot on the lightweight injection-molded receiver, which can be worn on the included belt or attached via long bolts to other objects. The bow is held firmly in place via a gravity locking system, yet slides out with minimal effort. You have to pull it out or flip it over to get the bow out. Use the belt to attach your bow to your pack, hip, truck headrest, blind, or tree. Bow Spider can also be easily attached to a binocular harness or backpack. In fact, it can be mounted to any sturdy flat surface for easy and safe storage, even on a wall.

Walhalla JROTC rifle athletes maintain a colorful tradition at the shooting range

Walhalla athletes High The School Army JROTC rifle team from Walhalla, South Carolina truly stands out on the range, not only for their performances, but also for their unique rifles on the firing line.

The stocks are beautiful, rich displays of enthusiasm and perseverance, handcrafted for the cadet who earned every drop of color. It’s a team tradition established nearly a decade ago that has kept Walhalla Razorback athletes aiming toward exciting ambition, and it’s fun to watch, too.

In April, the team competed in the 2023 JROTC Service Championship series that was held in Ohio, Alabama, and Utah. The event, run by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), is a three-position precision and sport air rifle competition for high school athletes. Walhalla’s Elaine Saint placed third overall in the sport class at the Ohio match (eighth overall out of nearly 300 Army JROTC competitors among the three places), while teammate Keagan Dean also finished in the top 10 athletes in Ohio.

COL Kevin Mangan, head coach of the rifle team, was there to witness it all. He has been training at Walhalla for 17 years, always encouraging his athletes to reach higher by setting goals, no matter how big or small.

“Easy, tangible goals can be a great motivator, from beginners to the most advanced athletes,” he explained. “Sometimes, it can be something as simple as, ‘Shoot a PR (personal record) and you’ll get a vote on where we eat on a road trip.'”

Other times, the goal is a bit more colorful.

The rifles are decorated by Mangan’s own family and by the Walhalla art department.

The team’s ingenious rifle tradition was on display eight years ago when one of Walhalla’s cadets, Matthew Smith, placed in the JROTC Service Championships. After his success, he asked his trainer if he could paint and customize his stock. To Smith’s delight, Mangan said yes.

Matthew’s chosen theme was a Gator Claw to show his love for his favorite college team, the Florida Gators. Matt Carroll, who, at the time, ran the air gun range at CMP’s southern Alabama location, designed the rifle himself.

Other team members liked the idea of customizing a rifle stock so much that they asked their trainer if they could decorate their own rifles. Mangan was on board with the idea, but with a catch.

Walhalla JROTC Razorback Rifle Team Painted Rifle Stocks

“I did the standard: shoot a 530 at a sports game and you can customize your stock,” he explained.

Mangan thought that was a high enough mark that only one cadet a year could achieve it, but, to his surprise and delight, the athletes began working towards the score and achieving it.

“They cared more about fulfilling the goal than the results of the game,” he joked.

Now, achieving the honor of a painted rifle stock has become the primary goal for college athletes. This season alone, four students have earned their custom actions, including two freshman athletes, which has never happened in the lore’s history.

Elaine Saint (right) placed third overall at the 2023 JROTC Service Championship Ohio location.

“It sets as the threshold for success,” Mangan said of the paint on the rifle. “We also have smaller goals set, like a score of 200 and you’re assigned a rifle, and at 250, you name your rifle, just little things to keep working on.”

COL Mangan has trained the Walhalla Razorback Rifle team for 17 years.

Once an athlete reaches the score of 530, they can choose the art theme on the rifle stock. Mangan’s wife and daughters handle the graphic work along with Walhalla’s art department. Of He Lion King to the Chronicles of Narnia to hunter x hunterEach athlete’s theme represents their own personalities and the hard work they have put in on the court.

To commemorate the tradition of the rifle team, Walhalla High School has assigned a trophy case in the student commons area to display the stock of graduating athletes. So far, there have been 11 painted rifles, with more being added every year.

“It has become an accomplishment for the Walhalla JROTC rifle team,” Mangan said.

Art chosen by each athlete showcases their individual interests in a colorful way.

Despite the emphasis on performance milestones, Mangan isn’t interested in how well his athletes score; there’s a deeper goal to be met in order to be a successful Razorback.

“Scores are good, but how good of a teammate are you?” Mangan said.

“Team results are directly affected by supporting each other when things aren’t going well,” he continued. “Accept the ride and enjoy the experience instead of a score that defines who you are.”

What started as a simple question has spawned lasting inspiration within the Walhalla rifle team. However, for Mangan, nothing stands out more vibrantly than true sportsmanship.

Jack Robertson’s 24th Annual Invitational Photo Session Celebrates Hunting, Conservation and Youth Involvement

EDGEFIELD, SC — The Jack Robertson Invitational Shoot celebrated its 24th consecutive year of raising funds for hunting and shooting sports on May 23, this year in honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the organization’s commitment to wild turkey conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage. .

Originally established by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the event began as a fundraiser for the NSSF for its Hunting Heritage Trust. As representative of the firearms industry and community, the gathering quickly became a high-profile gathering of firearms manufacturer leaders, making it a highly anticipated spring event.

Jack Robertson, a notable former NSSF employee, played a pivotal role in shaping and expanding the organization. After his retirement, the invitational clay sporting event was named in his honor in recognition of his contributions. Robertson was present at this year’s event and participated in the shooting activities along with three generations of his family.

Since its inception, the event has maintained a tradition of sharing its proceeds with various organizations, including USA Shooting, 4-H, and the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance. This year, in honor of the NWTF 50he Anniversary, proceeds from the event will support the NWTF JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) program, which has earned recognition for its exceptional work across the country.

To further emphasize the importance of this recognition, NWTF Co-Executive Director Jason Burckhalter attended the invited photo call and spoke with the shooters, sharing information about the organization’s history and highlighting its promising future.

Nearly 100 shooters attended the event held at the Ten Mile River Preserve in Dover Plains, New York. Dave Baron of Baron Engraving has assisted with the event since its inception. Baron, along with his employees, volunteer their time and effort to support the event. Additionally, he takes donated items for the event and engraves them to give the items more auction value. Baron, a Virginia native, is a member of the NWTF National Board of Directors.

“I would like to thank the donors who did so much to make this event a success; together, we can make a difference to engage the next generation,” Baron said. “Today’s youth need to fall in love with the outdoors so they are ready to be stewards of the wild game and open spaces we hold dear!”

Donations for this year’s event were at an all-time high, with more than 20 firearms and thousands of dollars in equipment donated. These items were the centerpiece of an exciting auction that followed the photo shoot and invitational luncheon.

Proceeds generated from this year’s Jack Robertson Invitational Photo Shoot will play a vital role in creating valuable opportunities for young outdoor enthusiasts to explore and appreciate outdoor recreational opportunities. Recognizing the importance of fostering a passion for the outdoors and hunting in our youth, the event’s fundraising efforts aim to ensure that the next generation is actively involved in conservation efforts and the preservation of shooting sports.

Space Innovations Lab Back Table Review

Tailgating, car camping, and picnicking from a small car or SUV has always been a bit of a problem because there hasn’t been a table that can be used to put down food and a place to keep drinks. No one wants to leave food on the ground and blankets are uncomfortable and easily soiled, especially when drinks are spilled, which is often the case with a picnic blanket. Space Innovations Lab has addressed this problem and as long as your vehicle has a latch hook you can have a rear table to use on your outdoor adventures.

We had the opportunity to meet Lawrence Bugg, the founder of Space Innovations Lab, several years ago at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Denver, Colorado. We had the opportunity to learn a little bit about the company from him and his passion for design and how he came up with the back table and how he was growing his business. In fact, it was the design that really caught our eye and kept our attention throughout the years. Every detail had been incredibly well thought out, from wine glass holders to how secure the table was when hooked onto a latch hook in the trunk of the car. The only caveat was that it wouldn’t work in a vehicle with a rollaway bed like our Tacoma at the time.

The idea kept ringing in my head, though, and this past year, after purchasing an SUV with a hatchback and snap hook, we finally got the chance to try out the tailgate at our own picnic. We stopped at Whole Foods and picked up some sodas and some sushi and headed to our local park to celebrate our 7 year wedding anniversary. It was a perfect warm day so the park was a bit crowded but we found a nice spot near a big tree and broke the table and had a wonderful visit just the two of us. We made mimosas, enjoyed some cheese and crackers and of course the sushi, it was perfect. Sitting in the back rear of the car worked great and the center of the rear of the tail doubles as a perfect cutting table for cheese and apples. The round center was great for placing food and the drink holders are very well thought out and keep our drinks from spilling.

The way the layout works is great for two people with enough space to sit in the back rear of the car and have the table in the middle. If you have more people you can bring a few extra chairs and everyone had enough room to move around comfortably and with enough glasses for a few friends and family.

The table fits amazingly well and was extremely sturdy and well designed. The whole package folds up into a single carry case and if you get the Deluxe package we suggest getting glasses and a full case to carry everything.

The deluxe package includes:

  • 6 12 oz plastic stemmed drink glasses
  • 6 6-ounce plastic drink cups
  • Separate deluxe pack bag that fits perfectly on the back table + 12 plastic cups.
  • Drinkware and Deluxe Bag Liner are dishwasher safe.
  • Cups made of Tritan – BPA-free plastic – Highly durable and shatter resistant
  • Additional storage area for plates/cutlery (actual plates and cutlery not included)

The back table is a perfectly wonderful and nice accessory to have. It’s a must have, probably not, but it really is a nice item and ours will stay right in the back of our SUV on a regular basis for all of our road trips. Even if we decide to stop and grab some fast food, the back table setup is very nice and easy and we can sit outside and watch the world go by for just a few minutes of relaxation on long road trips. The Tail Table will make a great gift and we have a few weddings coming up where we know happy couples will like the chance to enjoy their own picnics and have a table to have some fun at.

RESPONSE OF SAF FILES IN WA SEMIAUTOMATIC BAN CHALLENGE

Lawyers for the Second Amendment Foundation and its partners in a federal lawsuit challenging Washington state’s ban on so-called “assault weapons” have filed a response brief in their effort to obtain a preliminary injunction. The case is known as Hartford v. Ferguson.

In their answer brief, filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, SAF and its partners argue that the ban is unconstitutional under the Second Amendment and under the Supreme Court guidelines set forth in the ruling. Bruen from last year.

SAF joins the Firearms Policy Coalition, Sporting Systems of Hazel Dell and three private citizens, Brett Bass, Douglas Mitchell and Lawrence Hartford, for whom the case is named. They are represented by Seattle attorney Joel Ard.

The defendants are Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste, Kitsap County Sheriff John Gese and County Attorney Chad M. Enright; Kittitas County Sheriff Clayton Myers and County Attorney Greg Zempel; Clark County Sheriff John Horch and County Attorney Tony Golik and Snohomish County Sheriff Adam Fortnoy and County Attorney Jason Cummings all in their official capacities.

“Under guidelines set forth by the Supreme Court,” said SAF founder and executive vice president Alan M. Gottlieb, “a state can only ban ‘dangerous and unusual weapons,’ but since modern semi-automatic rifles are in common use for millions of people, they are not unusual. Supporters of the ban have deliberately and falsely called these firearms “weapons of war,” which they are not. The state has criminalized a common and important means of self-defense, the modern semi-automatic rifle, and has put politics ahead of constitutional rights.”

“A preliminary injunction against this law will not harm the state,” said SAF executive director Adam Kraut, who is a practicing attorney. “We believe that the ban is unconstitutional and therefore the application by the state amounts to deprivation of rights under the color of the law. This causes irreparable damage. A preliminary injunction will maintain the status quo, which puts constitutional rights before politics.”

Pistol Champion Suman Sanghera Sweeps Camp Perry Open Events 2023

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – On the weekend of May 19-22, Suman Sanghera, 17, of Great Falls, VA, returned to the Camp Perry Open to top the pistol portion of the annual air pistol competition for second year in a row. Last year, Sanghera led the Junior class, but in 2023 he showcased his strengths by claiming the open match and overall victory in the Super Final event.

The Camp Perry Open features small-bore three-position sporting/precision air rifle competitions, as well as 60-shot air rifle and air pistol competitions, divided into Open and Junior categories. The event is hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) at the indoor Gary Anderson CMP Competency Center and outdoor Petrarca Range, both located on the grounds of Camp Perry. Each event includes qualifying rounds, followed by an elimination final that determines the overall winners. Team events were also held simultaneously with the 3×20 air rifle and 60-shot qualifying matches over the weekend.

Charles Bratton led the sporting class in the Camp Perry Open 3×20 air rifle event.

A senior athlete, Sanghera is a member of the NOVA Sharpshooters team and is the top female 10m air pistol athlete in the US. Among other accolades, she holds a national record and has won numerous gold medals throughout of his career. This fall she will attend Ohio State University as a member of the pistol team and will study to become a medic. With her success, in 2023, the CMP Scholarship Committee chose her as one of the top 4 athletes to receive a recurring $5,000 over the next four years ($20,000 total) through the CMP Scholarship Program.

A family affair, Sanghera’s brother Bhavjeet, 20, placed third in the Junior and Open categories after taking third place in the Junior match at last year’s event.

Katrina Demerle placed first in the 3×20 Air Rifle Accuracy class.

Molly McGhin, 21, of Griffin, GA, also earned victories at the 2023 Camp Perry Open and claimed the Open 60 Shot Rifle event, while 18-year-old Katrina Demerle of Hamilton, Ohio led the competition. youth. Demerle had taken first place overall in the 3×20 match in the precision class on the opening day of the Camp Perry Open, with 18-year-old Charles Bratton of Clover, SC leading the sport class.

The 2023 Camp Perry Open marked a new beginning for the CMP Smallbore program, using the new 50-meter KTS (Kongsberg Target Systems) E-Score system for the first time. The targets are set to be used in future CMP small-bore competitions, including the upcoming domestic small-bore matches in July.

“I think the Camp Perry Open went really well for the first time with these targets,” said Brad Donoho, CMP small drilling manager. “We learned a lot and identified a few things to fix before Nationals.”

“Overall, I am very satisfied with how the match went and I am confident that the 2023 National Matches will be very successful,” he added.

Leading the Smallbore 3×20 elimination event at the Camp Perry Open was Olympic medalist Mary Tucker, 21, of Sarasota, FL. Gavin Barnick, 20, of Appleton, WI, was the junior athlete in high school.

Another exclusive event at the Camp Perry Open is the early Super Final, which includes costumes, music and other dazzling effects that add fun to the game. During the Super Final, the top 38 competitors from each day’s air rifle and air pistol qualification round gather on the firing line to compete in an intense elimination event. The competition continues until only one athlete is left standing.

The 2023 Camp Perry Open saw CMP using the new 50-meter KTS E-Score system for small-bore competition.

Elijah Spencer of Boise, Idaho won the 2023 rifle Super Final, while Sanghera led the pistol side. They each won $200 for their first place.
