The DSC Convention kicks off each year as the first major hunting and conservation show in North America. Inspired by true southern hospitality, we’re proud to have hosted a world-class event in Dallas for over 40 years.

The DSC Convention expects to bring together an estimated total attendance of 40,000 people and approximately 900 exhibiting partners representing 72 different countries from around the world, in a space of 700,000 square feet. of exhibit hall inside the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas.

As we look beyond 2024, inevitable changes are looming in our future. The City of Dallas has announced a multi-year plan to demolish and redevelop the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, our event site for the past 14 years. While there is excitement about what will be a state-of-the-art facility here in Dallas, this massive project requires DSC to find a new home for our Convention for the years 2025-2029, until construction is complete.

After a comprehensive review of 32 locations, spanning Texas and the US, DSC is pleased to announce that the 2025-2029 DSC Conventions will take place in Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia World Congress Center. Our extensive search and evaluation took into account convention center facilities, hotels, amenities and international airport access, as well as regional outdoor lifestyle demographics. We are extremely confident that the Georgia World Congress Center will be the premier site for successful DSC conventions in the future!

The dates of the DSC conventions in Atlanta will not change from those previously published, and we are confident that our exhibiting partners, attendees and guests will continue to enjoy the southern hospitality that is the hallmark of the DSC Convention. Atlanta representatives will be on hand at the 2024 Dallas Convention to provide a wealth of information about the convention center, the city, and their commitment to providing a world-class experience.

In addition to the annual conventions taking place in Atlanta from 2025 to 2029, DSC is pleased to announce that in 2025 we will begin hosting a second convention in Dallas each summer. Aligned with the DSC Foundation Gala, this Expo will feature many of our valued exhibiting partners, include evening events, and culminates with the annual DSC Foundation Gala on Saturday night.

While Dallas will always be our home and we are very excited about the future of the new Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, DSC looks forward to the opportunity to put on the largest hunting and conservation show on the road for a few years. We look forward to seeing you in Dallas, Texas on January 11-14, 2024, and encourage you to make plans to join us in Atlanta beginning in 2025!

Z-Man® wins back-to-back at ICAST

New Mulletron™ LT Swimbait Voted Best New Saltwater Soft Bait

Beyond signs of potential greatness, back-to-back championship trophies often imply exemplary culture: creativity, camaraderie, and other exciting things brewing behind the scenes. Competitive replays are usually assigned to the crème de la crème, cutting edge athletes and hall of fame teams who, across multiple seasons, continue to click on all cylinders. More concisely, teams simply don’t achieve best two years in a row status unless something special is afoot.

At this year’s Big Game Fishing Ball, also known as ICAST, a season of brainstorming, sweat equity, and in-water lure testing resulted in two wins for Z-Man at the prestigious New Product Showcase. Further cementing his prominence as architects of bladed jigs, Z-Man’s new ChatterBait Elite EVO™ won Best New Freshwater Hard Lure.

For the second year in a row, the Vanguard Tackle team also won Best New Saltwater Soft Lure with its innovative Mulletron™ LT (Line-Through) Swim Lure. (Last July, Z-Man won the same category of awards with its innovative, first-of-its-kind Kicker CrabZ™, a side-swimming crab hook that garnered winning votes from reputable fishing media and tackle buyers alike.)

At the 2023 ICAST show, among a highly competitive field of 29 other new soft lures slated for saltwater, Z-Man once again drew the winning votes, this time for its technical saltwater mullet-mimicking swimbait—a not-so-subtle statement for the South Carolina coastal company whose headquarters are awash in salty blasts from the adjacent Atlantic.

The ICAST-winning Mulletron LT swimbait from Z-Man offers several amazing angler-focused advantages.

For Z-Man’s director of product development, José Chávez, the win marked satisfaction on behalf of the amplified angler’s success. But the award also opened a conversation about decoy conservation-focused design, a hidden branch of the Mulletron LT’s purpose-oriented anatomy.

“We’ve spent a lot of time in the last few months educating anglers about the value of a saltwater hook that goes through the line,” says Chavez, a longtime lure designer and accomplished angler. “What we haven’t widely disclosed to this point is that the Mulletron LT’s internal hook and line-pass harness system is also conservation driven, in part with a focus on fish health and safe releases.

“Of course, the unique sickle-style dorsal hook and lure’s slider system hold the fish firmly and ensure they stay hooked throughout the battle,” Chavez notes. “Normally, the hook sits nicely in the corner of a fish’s jaw or snugly in the soft meat inside the mouth. The bait itself is then slid up the line and away from the jaws, where large, powerful fish, often airborne, cannot use their weight for leverage.

Paired with a specialized single hook, the Mulletron LT’s through-the-line construction helps deliver clean, healthy casts.

“Often to the detriment of the health of the fish, many cross-line swimbaits employ a treble hook, which can create all sorts of potential problems and hazards when handling large, powerful fish alongside the boat. Obviously, a single hook helps to avoid some of these problems. But with Mulletron, we went further by optimizing hook placement and designing a unique sickle-style hook for maximum penetration, holding power, and quick, harmless removal.”

“On the boat, a quick snap of the pliers safely releases the hook and ensures a safe and healthy release, protecting both the angler and the fish from potential harm. Apex predators like tarpon and snook are a precious resource, and we want to do everything we can to sustain these incredible fisheries.”

Speaking directly to the lure’s form and function, Chavez calls attention to the hidden engineering of the Mulletron LT. “As a prey species, the mullet is ubiquitous, certainly among the most important forage fish for saltwater predators off the North American coast. As prime targets among selective tarpon, snook, stripers, and other super-powered sport fish, we knew that any mullet bait we built had to be physically true to life and extremely tough. The ElaZtech material of the bait is itself the strongest soft plastic in the industry.

“But at ICAST, we wanted to give people a behind-the-scenes look at the inner skeleton, or harness, of the Mulletron LT,” he said. “To permanently lock the harness in place, we use special ABS bolts, which attach to the ElaZtech material like a vise. Providing additional security, a large corkscrew (spring) ensures that the bait and harness will work as one. Underneath the ABS are special bolts that lock the bait ballast weights in place. We even implemented a hidden rattle chamber for maximum sound pull.”

Chávez calls for additional accoutrements, further establishing the Mulletron as a worthy winner. “The bait’s wedge-shaped tail produces high-level punching and kicking action at any retrieve speed, even when the bait is free falling. Inside the tail is a hollow scent chamber. You will notice a small port, at the top, that allows anglers to inject Pro-Cure or other attractants for a slow release scent trail.”

Finally, to allow anglers to reach fish in secret and inaccessible holding areas (under piers, mangroves, bridges, etc.), the Mulletron features flat sides that promote smooth, discreet jumps.

“Obviously, we poured our heart and soul into this design,” admits Chávez. “Selfishly, we did it, at least in part, because everyone at Z-Man is passionate about catching and releasing the biggest saltwater animals.

“Seriously though, we couldn’t be happier that anglers around the world are now enjoying the same success and enthusiasm we’ve had trying it out. To be recognized by our friends in the sport fishing community and to go home with an ICAST trophy is an incredible honor. It motivates us to take lure design even further into the future. Stay tuned!”

Equaling the realism and precise sink rates of technical freshwater sand swimbaits, the Mulletron LT offers a moderate sink rate (ROF-8), sinking eight feet every ten seconds. Two size versions, a 4.5-inch weighing 3/4 ounces (3/0 hook) and a 6-inch weighing 1-3/4 ounces (5/0 hook), allow local forage classes to be mixed. Six fine-tuned color patterns correspond to various light and water conditions and mimic local mullet runs. The Mulletron LT’s ultra-realistic mullet profile is perfectly complemented by highly detailed, hand-painted or photo-printed body finishes. Available in October, the Z-Man Mulletron LT will retail for $9.99 and $12.99, respectively.

Clinic provides tune-up for Max Soviak Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match

In preparation for the Max Soviak National CMP Rimfire Sporter Match the following day, 41 competitors took advantage of live fire position training at the CMP Sports Competition Clinic on Friday, July 7 at Camp Perry’s Viale Range.

The party was named for Max Soviak, a US Marine Corpsman from Berlin Heights, Ohio, who was killed by a suicide bomber while helping evacuees in Kabul, Afghanistan. This year, the CMP paid tribute to Max’s service, sacrifice and memory by naming the annual CMP Rimfire Sporter Match in his honor.

Clinic attendees had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the rim range one day before the game and had plenty of time and ammunition to go over prone, seated, and standing positions, shooting in slow and rapid fire stages at 50 and 25 yards.

Rimfire shooters compare notes on left-hand shooting technique.

The CMP handed out 50 rounds of ammunition to all the participants and loaner sporter rifles to those who needed them for the clinic. Attendees who brought extra ammo used the extra rounds to polish up their practice session. The live fire class was held in two relays, so families and friends were able to share equipment.

Brian Young, 43, of Wattsburg, PA, and his son, Gunnar, 13, enjoyed some family time at the shooting range and used the clinic as a warm-up for Saturday’s game. On game day, Brian shot the match in the open sights class and Gunnar trailed by just seven points, shooting in the telescopic class. Like other families at the shooting range both days, the match provided an opportunity to enjoy the sport in a family environment.

The research investigates the impact of diseases and parasites on the wild turkey of the Rio Grande

A distinct subspecies of the North American wild turkey found primarily in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, and Nebraska, the Rio Grande wild turkey faces many threats, including habitat loss, urbanization, climate change, disease, and parasites, and these factors play a significant role in impacting the overall health of wild turkey populations in the Rio Grande. Recognizing its importance, a new study emphasizes the critical need to closely monitor the health of these populations to ensure their long-term survival.

To address this problem, a new research project is underway to monitor parasites and diseases in wild turkeys on the Rio Grande. Spanning four states (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska) within the Great Plains ecoregion, the scope of the project covers a wide area, encompassing 13 different NWTF focal landscapes. Researchers will conduct surveys to assess parasites and infectious diseases in these turkeys, establishing baseline health information for the subspecies. By gaining a better understanding of the prevalence and severity of infections and parasitism, this research will contribute to conservation efforts and the long-term well-being of wild turkeys in the Rio Grande.

Previous studies on wild turkeys in the Rio Grande have identified the presence of diseases, parasites, and viruses that affect populations, causing illness and mortality. In addition, in 2023, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was reported for the first time in wild turkeys. This highly transmissible disease can cause the death of infected birds, as well as a decrease in egg production in non-fatal cases. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring and addressing these health threats.

“The goal of this proposed study is to perform a comprehensive, wide-range health assessment for wild turkeys in the Rio Grande,” said Dr. Blake Grisham, an associate professor of wildlife management at Texas Tech University. “Our findings will help us make future recommendations for continued surveillance of parasites and pathogens of concern to the Rio Grande wild turkey at the study sites.”

Grisham noted that there are currently no formal studies specifically focusing on general health, susceptibility, disease and parasite prevalence and their underlying causes within Rio Grande wild turkey populations conducted at the subspecies distribution level. This means conducting research that spans the entire range or distribution area of the Rio Grande wild turkey subspecies, rather than focusing on specific locations or isolated populations.

The absence of standardized research has resulted in a limited understanding of health status and specific threats. A comprehensive study is needed to fill this gap, providing a clearer understanding of the health issues affecting these turkeys and providing valuable information for the conservation and management of wild turkey populations in the Rio Grande.

“This knowledge could lead to the implementation of new regulations or management practices to protect the wild turkey populations of the Rio Grande that can be collected while limiting the spread of parasites and disease,” Grisham said.

Field research will begin in the fall and winter of 2023, capturing Rio Grande wild turkeys with rocket nets or magnetic nets, baited with cracked corn and milo. Harvest of Rio Grande wild turkeys in each study area will continue through the fall and winter seasons until the birds disperse from non-breeding flocks to breeding individuals. This capture process will be completed by the end of the fall and winter season in 2026.

When a wild Rio Grande turkey is caught, it will be fitted with a uniquely numbered aluminum leg. A small amount of blood will then be drawn from your leg for testing and samples will be taken from the cloaca (cavity at the end of the digestive tract) and choanal (opening of the nasal cavity) to collect samples for disease analysis. In addition, several breast feathers will be plucked and the eighth secondary feather on each wing will be clipped for genetic analysis. These procedures allow researchers to collect important data and information.

Grisham, the study’s principal investigator, will collaborate with co-investigators from seven universities, the newly established Texas Tech University College of Veterinary Medicine, and four professional student organizations to complete panels of blood chemistry, blood counts, as well as disease, parasite, and virus tests.

“It’s extremely exciting that this research project is a collaboration between leading wild turkey researchers and scientists, working together across state lines to perform a nearly full-range disease analysis,” said Annie Farrell, District Biologist for NWTF for Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and the United States. Nebraska. “The implications and benefits are significant. By establishing a baseline health analysis, we can further help our state agency partners and other wildlife professionals better manage the Rio Grande wild turkey populations.”

Additionally, this research aims to help other scientists control parasites and disease in wild turkey populations by establishing standardized sampling methods. These findings can inform wildlife managers to guide regulations and practices to protect turkeys and their genetic diversity, generally supporting their long-term survival and enabling sustainable hunting.

“Investment in this project, as well as other research projects in the Great Plains states, will help guide the management of the Rio Grande wild turkey for years to come, so this resource will continue to exist for future generations.” Farrell says.

This project is one of 10 new research projects In nine states, the NWTF is funding, with $582,374 invested among these vital projects. These research projects are part of a nearly $9 million investment in wild turkey research by 2023, supported by the NWTF and its partners.

Duck hunters select between two bag limits when registering with HIP

Duck hunters again have to choose between two daily bag limits when they sign up for their Harvest Information Program number this year.

Nebraska and South Dakota are entering the third year of a “two-tier” program for the regular season ducks.

Tier I is a traditional bag limit of six ducks with species and sex restrictions. Tier II is a three-duck bag limit with no species or sex restrictions.

HIP registration begins August 1. During the registration process, hunters will be asked if they plan to hunt ducks. If they do, they will be prompted to select a level. Hunters will be subject to that bag limit throughout the season.

The regulations will not apply to goose limits or early season teal, which have their own bag limits.

All hunters age 16 and older, including residents, nonresidents, lifetime permit holders, veterans, and senior permit holders, must register with HIP if they plan to hunt migratory game birds in Nebraska between September 1, 2023 and July 31, 2024. .

Residents under the age of 16 are exempt from the HIP requirement only if they select the Tier I baggage allowance. All hunters must register for HIP if they select Tier II. All non-residents, regardless of age, must register for HIP at any level.

Hunters who choose the Tier II option will receive a journal, where they will record information about hunting activity and harvest. The journal will be submitted to the Nebraska Park and Game Commission at the end of the hunting season.

In addition, postage-paid envelopes will be provided to most Tier II hunters with the expectation that one wing will be shipped from each duck hunted. This process is crucial to federal collection efforts when estimating the harvest. Duck harvest and species composition will be compared to hunters using the Tier I option. If sufficient wings are not received to assess harvest for Tier II hunters, it is unlikely that the program will continue beyond the experimental phase.

New this year, starting August 1, hunters must register for HIP through their permit system customer profile at GoOutdoorsNE.com. Registered hunters are assigned a number that they must carry with them while hunting. Learn more at OutdoorNebraska.gov.

Required by federal regulation of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, HIP helps wildlife managers estimate the number of migratory game birds taken each year. Migratory birds include pigeons, ducks, geese, snipes, rails, coots, and woodcocks.

The two-tiered program will continue for the next two seasons and will then be re-examined to determine if it affected the number of waterfowl hunters and duck populations.
