Pope and Young Announces Second Round Inductees for Hall of Fame

Pope and Young, America’s leading archery conservation organization, recently inducted seven highly deserving Pope and Young members into its Hall of Fame on the 33rdrd Biennial Convention.

at 32North Dakota Biennial Convention, Pope and Young announced the creation of its Hall of Fame and inducted its first five members. Becoming part of the Hall of Fame, for an organization with so many iconic hunters and conservationists, is something to be held in high esteem. Each of this year’s inductees has played an important role in promoting and preserving bowhunting, and Pope and Young is proud to induct them into the prestigious Hall of Fame.

Inductees into this year’s Biennale Hall of Fame include:

C. RANDALL BYERS

Randy joined the Pope and Young club in 1971 and began serving on the Board of Directors in November 1983, serving continuously until his death. Randy became president of the Club in April 2002 until his death that same year in August. Randy computerized the entire records program while the records office was at his home in Moscow, Idaho. He was also very influential in combining the records office with the clerk’s office and moving to Chatfield, MN.

KEVIN HISEY

Kevin joined Pope and Young in 1985 and became a Journeyman Measurer in 1988, where he served as a panel judge for 11 biennia. He served as Executive Secretary for 15 years, his tenure in that position is the longest in the Club’s history. He began working for the club in 1982 and his relationship with Pope and Young spanned 34 years of dedicated service.

larry streiff

Larry joined Pope and Young in 1973 and in 2021 received Emeritus Senior Lifetime Membership. Larry participated in his first panel in 1979 in Salt Lake City and has participated in 23 consecutive panels since. In 1993, Larry was elected to the Board as a Director, before completing a full term, he was named President of Records and served in that position for six years. He worked hard to write the typical and atypical chapters of the first Pope and Young measurement manual, and much of the general measurement section. Larry still serves very faithfully in assisting the office staff whenever they request his help.

G. FRED ASBELL

Fred joined Pope and Young in 1966 and his first term on the Board of Directors began in 1978. He served as a Director for six years until 1984, when Fred ran for president and served as president from 1984 to 2002. Fred was the leader of Pope and Young for 18 continuous years, the longest-serving chairman in the club’s history. But to us as members of Pope and Young, he was more than a director, a member, or a president. Fred was not only a legendary bow hunter, but he was also our dedicated leader and friend. He ensured that ethical behavior and fair prosecution practices remained the backbone of our organization.

GLENN HISEY

Glenn joined Pope and Young in 1975 and became a Senior Life Member in 2016. Glenn became an Official Measurer in 1981 and has been on nearly every panel since 1981, as well as eight Boone and Crockett panels. It goes without saying that Glenn is one of the elite measurers within the system having trained over 700 Pope and Young measurers. He was also a major player in the writing and development of the Meters Manual. Glenn has held and served in many capacities within the Club, including as Executive Secretary for 11 years, 1street Vice President, Director of Registries and President of Registries.

MARVIN AND JUDY CLYNCKE

Marv joined Pope and Young in 1969, followed by Judy in 1981 and was only the seventh bowhunter to be accepted as a regular member in 1999. Both Marv and Judy have been active in Pope and Young auctions. Marv has donated several beautiful scrimshaw pieces for the auction and various other prizes. Both have helped with the royal auctions in one way or another. Marv even demonstrated her skills as an auctioneer on several occasions. Marv donated over 100 bows and arrows to the Pope and Young Museum. They have actively mentored young and old throughout their bowhunting careers. Bows and arrows have often been given to youngsters to get them interested in bow hunting and the outdoors. Both Marv and Judy have received “Lifetime Achievement Awards” from the Colorado Bow Hunters Association.

Remington Announces New Partnership with Earth Blinds

Remington Ammunition is proud to announce its latest licensee partnership, Earth Blinds. The brands are coming together to bring you an exciting line of hunting blinds for the ultimate advantage in the field. The innovative blinds will come onto the market in August 2023.

“Earth Blinds has been producing quality American-made hunting blinds since its inception,” said Danny Evans, Remington Director of Global Licensing. “The unique application process really sets them apart from any other shade on the market. Remington is very pleased to partner with Earth Blinds to bring these products to Remington fans.”

As the world’s first natural hunting blind, Earth Blinds use a patented real earth finish and are fully adaptable to any environment. The dirty exterior allows the blind to go unnoticed as UL light is absorbed rather than reflected back to the animal. The exterior application adds to the natural aesthetic and scent of the blind, allowing it to blend in naturally when you need it most.

“Earth Blinds is looking forward to a successful launch later this year,” said Scott Maes, President of Earth Blinds, LLC. “We are very excited to partner with Remington to bring a fully customizable shade to market. These new blinds are like nothing that has been done before. We really appreciate the opportunity to partner with a company like Remington to make it happen.”

Remington fans already know where to find the highest performing ammunition to get the job done during deer season, and now they can boast an even bigger edge this fall.

Remington is always looking for quality partners to represent the Remington brand in new product categories. Contact Danny Evans at [email protected] with any questions.

Anglers should be careful when fishing for deep sea walleye

Anglers catching deep sea walleye must carry and learn to use deep sea release devices to prevent fish kills.

Walleye are moving away from their spawning grounds into deep water. Anglers reeling them in from depths of 25 feet or more can cause walleye barotrauma. Barotrauma is when the gas in a walleye’s swim bladder, which helps control buoyancy, expands, forcing the eyes to bulge and the bladder to come out of the mouth. If the fish is released in this condition, it will not be able to return to its depth.

Lake McConaughy, Merritt Reservoir, and Elwood Reservoir are typically the reservoirs where this can be a problem.

Daryl Bauer, manager of the Nebraska Park and Game Commission’s fisheries outreach program, said Nebraska anglers are unaware of deep-sea release devices. Instead, he said, they use hypodermic needles to release the gas from walleye suffering from barotrauma, and he said there’s no research showing it’s effective in saving fish.

A blog written by Bauer discusses this topic and includes a video on how to release fish in deep water. See it at magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/2014/11/deep-water-mortality/.

To avoid causing barotrauma, anglers may move to shallower water. But those intending to fish for deep sea walleye in these reservoirs need to plan. Keep a deep-water release device on hand to quickly release fish back to where they came from. After hooking a walleye, land as quickly as possible; rocking slowly will not lessen the effects of barotrauma.
