Celebrate Wisconsin’s vital rural and urban forests this Arbor Day

MADISON, Wisconsin. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages the public to celebrate Friday, April 28 as Wisconsin Arbor Day and April 22-28 as Forest Appreciation Week.

Arbor Day, an annual observance promoting tree planting and care, has been celebrated in Wisconsin on the last Friday of April since 1883. Forest Appreciation Week, which runs from Earth Day April 22 through Arbor Day is a time to reflect on the importance of trees and forests in our lives.

“Forests are deeply embedded in Wisconsin culture,” said Heather Berklund, DNR state forestry director. “Wisconsin’s rural and urban forests play a vital role in our state and local economy and environmental health.”

The 17 million acres of forests that cover nearly half of Wisconsin and the millions of urban trees across the state protect water resources, provide habitat for wildlife, and support our forestry industry, while providing countless recreational opportunities. outdoors, they support human health and mitigate the impacts of climate change. .

Investments in tree planting and forest stewardship by communities, homeowners, and forest land owners are key to ensuring Wisconsin continues to have healthy, sustainable urban and rural forests that support stronger, more resilient communities.

Students across the state have also played a stewardship role over the years, as the DNR donates tree seedlings each year to fourth-grade classrooms to commemorate Arbor Day. More than 35,000 seedlings were sent to schools this week to help students learn about the importance of trees in their lives. In addition, the DNR reforestation program has provided Wisconsin landowners with more than 1.6 billion seedlings since 1911.

In 2021, the state of Wisconsin committed to plant trees and conserve forests by focusing on stewardship of forests and trees in both rural and urban areas, addressing the equitable distribution of urban tree cover, and pledging to safeguard our active forest lands development. . Preserving and growing Wisconsin’s forests is critical to supporting Wisconsin’s forest products industry, which provides 61,000 jobs and contributes $24.4 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Two years after the commitment, progress towards the goal of planting 74 million rural trees by 2030 is 30%. Progress toward the urban tree planting goal of 1 million trees is 8.8%. Finally, progress towards the conservation goal of 125,000 acres of forests is 13.1%.

About GMT:

In 2012, Paul Capdepon lived in an area where he preferred that the contents of his personal computer not be known. He carried a nondescript commuter-style backpack and wanted the ability to organize EDC-type gear. Not finding a suitable option, Paul decided to adapt the traditional MOLLE style mesh and designed the first ever Rigid MOLLE Panel™ to insert into any backpack with a 15″ laptop sleeve.

After receiving interest in the Rigid MOLLE Panel™ that Paul had made for his own gear, he decided to launch a basic website in 2014 to start selling them. Paul worked with local fabricators in his home state of Louisiana as demand to expand the RMP™ range of sizes increased rapidly. GMT™ has undergone extensive testing and evaluation under the most adverse and demanding conditions. GMT™ then incorporated customer feedback to optimize performance in creating a trusted organizational platform.

Since then, the RMP Series™ has been used by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, specifically the DOS, DOJ, DHS, FBI, USMS, USBP, NYPD, and LAPD for the US Armed Forces, including the US Army, USAF, USN, USMC, USCG, and USSOCOM, with deployment to assigned missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and surrounding areas of operation. As a result, the RMP Series™ has produced over 1,000 five-star reviews in our efforts to make critical equipment quickly accessible.

Our ongoing passion is serving prepared citizens, outdoorsmen, law enforcement, first responders, and Armed Forces communities, and we look forward to continuing to build teams that enable them to perform at the highest level.

Savage Arms® Announces New Film “Aldo Leopold

Savage Arms proudly announces “Aldo Leopold | Serve the Land,” which debuted exclusively on Carbon TV on April 26, 2023 and is now available on Savage’s website. This comprehensive film looks at Leopold’s impact, significance, and of course, legacy. Viewers will learn why he was such an influential person in the history of wildlife conservation in North America, and also discover a direct link Savage Arms had to Leopold.

Many people know Leopold as a pioneer in wildlife conservation and are familiar with his life story and major achievements. Leopold’s collection of essaysA Sand County Almanac” it is iconic in many conservation, environmental, and hunting communities. With more than two million copies sold, it is one of the most respected books on the environment ever published and is the driving force behind Leopold being considered the most influential mind on conservation in the 20s.he century.

“Aldo Leopold’s name, history and many of his accomplishments are well known within the hunting community,” said Megan Harten, marketing manager for Savage Arms. “But this film highlights specific stories and pivotal events in great detail. Our partners in this project present unparalleled information and insights that will enable even the most dedicated followers or scholars of Leopold to learn something new. We are proud of this film and look forward to hearing how viewers gained a new perspective and appreciation for the work of a great man, conservationist, and hunter.”

Leopold, like many who truly make a difference in their field, devoted himself entirely to conservation. In 1928, he believed that wildlife conservation was so flawed that he quit his comfortable, well-paying job with the Forest Service to pursue, develop, and implement his progressive ideas on the subject. At that time he had five children and the country was on the verge of entering the Great Depression.

Leopold’s drive to step up and make a difference was fueled by the initial reasoning that wildlife conservation was not achieved enough by protecting wildlife: it required active management. This meant that it was not enough for rangers to enforce the laws and that effective wildlife conservation required wildlife managers.

After Leopold left the Forest Service, he became unemployed and needed to find a way to pursue a career in wildlife conservation. In 1928, he was lucky enough to land a contractor position with an influential trade group, the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI). Savage Arms was a member of his organization, so interestingly, Savage was a direct supporter of Leopold in one of the most influential periods of his life. Leopold would go on to collect data, implement programs and models, and be a driving force in conservation that still shapes policy and practice today.

Savage would like to thank the following people for helping make this film:

stan’s temple

Stan is Beers-Bascom Professor Emeritus in Conservation in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology and past chair of the Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development Program at the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies in University of Washington–Madison. Janet is Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture and Planning at UW-Madison, where she specialized in regional conservation strategies and landscape ecology; construction of forest conservation scenarios. Janet grew up close to Riley and her family property was once part of the Riley Game Cooperative. https://dpla.wisc.edu/staff/janet-silbernagel/

Aldo Leopoldo Foundation

Established in 1982 by the five children of Aldo Leopold and his wife Estella, we are a conservation organization that works to inspire an ethical relationship between people and nature through Leopold’s legacy. This vision of a “land ethic” was not meant to be rigid or dogmatic; instead, Leopold intended it to continually evolve through personal reflection, open dialogue, and the actions of people on earth and in their communities. We invite you to join us as we work to weave a land ethic into society and encourage its development in a myriad of ways.

More information about Leopold, his history, and his impact on conservation can be found at https://savagearms.com/blog?p=who-was-aldo-leopold. The full feature is now available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWM7M6gCJSQ.

Easy reloading with Hornady Lock-N-Load® Classic™ Kit

Whether you’re a reloading novice or a seasoned veteran who values simplicity and functionality, the Hornady Lock-N-Load® Classic™ will prepare shooters to take the range by storm. Reloading cartridges can save money and, better yet, allow reloaders to optimize accuracy by precisely creating the load the rifle will shoot best with.

The simple and effective engineering of this single stage press gives reloaders complete control, reliably delivering the required accuracy and consistency. The uniquely angled, solid cast frame is designed to ensure perfect alignment of the die holder and shell and allow reloaders to see and access the cartridge throughout the process. The frame is guaranteed to never break or fail.

The Lock-N-Load® quick-change socket system allows reloaders to change sockets in seconds, allowing for quick and easy caliber changes when reloading cartridges for multiple firearms. Place the punch and tighten the Sure-Loc™ Ring onto the Lock-N-Load® Bushing with a single turn. The six locking tabs on the die and press sleeves keep the dies in a stable and secure alignment. A rubber O-ring on the die bushings gives reloaders a better feel when the die is inserted, holding it tight against the locking tabs to prevent accidental loosening. To change gauges, turn the socket counter-clockwise, remove it and insert the next default Lock-N-Load® socket and bushing. Because they stay locked into their Lock-N-Load® bushings, the dies will stay exactly as they were placed.

Leverage, applied consistently, ensures proper seating of the bullet and primer. The Lock-N-Load Classic’s solid steel arm pivots on a steel pin that runs all the way through the frame. The long stick gets a boost from the Power-Pac linkage, multiplying leverage and reducing operator fatigue. The large, ergonomic, ball-style grip also reduces effort and improves comfort.

Removing and replacing worn chokes is a breeze, much easier than the process associated with old style choke arms. The spent primer is ejected at the top of the stroke. Then add a new choke to the Positive Priming System™, which automatically aligns to feed, and insert the choke at the bottom of the stroke, where it’s best to pry.
