Rigby publishes a limited edition book of Dagga Boy hunting stories as part of a project to promote ethical and sustainable hunting in Africa

London arms manufacturer John Rigby & Co. has published a limited edition book called rigby Dagga Boy, presenting stories of African buffalo hunts in the words of the hunters themselves.

rigby dagga boy It is the ultimate coffee table book for anyone who has experienced the magic of a buffalo hunt or for those for whom bagging a scrum cap-wearing buffalo is a lifelong dream. Limited to just 1,000 copies and available to purchase on Rigby’s website, the book features more than 70 stories interspersed with behind-the-scenes photography and details of the vendors and professional hunters involved. The book is a compilation of the incredible buffalo hunting accounts submitted by hunters from around the world as their entries to the inaugural Rigby Dagga Boy Project in late 2021.

The biennial Dagga Boy project is designed to collect scientific data while highlighting the importance of valuing a buffalo’s age more than its ‘inches’. The aim is to promote ethical hunting and ensure a healthier and stronger population of the six species of African buffalo by targeting old and broken horned bulls that are past breeding age.

To participate in the Dagga Boy Project, hunters were asked to send Rigby’s team a detailed description of their buffalo hunt, along with photographs of the qualified bulls they had taken in the last 10 years. In the case of the 2021 inaugural project, the hunt had to take place until the end of the 2021 season and registrations closed in December of that year.

Rigby’s managing director, Marc Newton, commented: “We received hundreds of entries for the Dagga Boy project that absolutely blew us away, and the stories they contained were so evocative and extraordinary in their detail that we knew they had to be shared with other hunters.” enthusiasts. The result is a stunning coffee table-style book that gives the reader an insight into the exciting, dangerous, and rewarding quest that is to hunt down the wily old buffalo Dagga Boy. Some of the stories gave me chills and all made me desperate to book my next hunt.”

Missouri Governor’s 14th Annual Juvenile Turkey Hunt

The annual Missouri Governor’s Hunt is a cooperative effort between Governor Mike Parson, the Missouri Conservation Federation, the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, Friends of the NRA, and private owners.

The 2023 Governor’s Juvenile Turkey Hunt marks the 14thhe year of this special event. The hunt serves as state recognition of the importance of natural resources and outdoor recreation to the citizens of Missouri. It is also a celebration of Missouri’s leadership role in hunter recruitment, retention and reactivation.

From left, Bill and William Eckelkamp and MDC Commissioner Steven Harrison.

The youth began the hunt by attending a turkey information session and turkey singing prior to the youth opening. Newbies learned the basics of hunting call and etiquette, as well as other essential information to keep in mind when chasing wild turkeys. They also had the opportunity to model their shotguns and learn about hunter safety. The dedicated staff of the Missouri Department of Conservation hosted the clinic.

The night before the inauguration, festivities were held at the governor’s mansion. Representatives from partner agencies and organizations spoke briefly about the importance of the event and raised anticipation for the upcoming hunt.

Kensley Bailey and guide and board member of the Missouri State NWTF chapter RL Bennett.

Speakers included Kevin Hess, president of the NWTF’s Missouri State Chapter; Sara Parker Pauley, director of the Missouri Department of Conservation; Gregg Pearre, president of the Friends of the NRA State Fund; Tyler Schwartze, executive director of the Missouri Federation of Conservation; and Rep. Bruce Sassmann, 61street District. The youth then received a one-on-one call from Jim Clark before taking a photo with Pauley and NWTF district biologist John Burk. From there, the youth fanned out across the state to meet with generous landowners and mentors to mark their first turkey tag.

Reece Pearre with his guide Logan Burk.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature threw the youngsters a curveball for the opener, and most of the state experienced high sustained winds for nearly the entirety of the season opener. Sunday, however, brought better weather, and most of those who were able to hunt on the second day experienced the game of turkey hunting as it was designed. In general, the results were good, with eight of the 15 children harvesting birds.

Walker Jeremy with guide and uncle Tyler Schwartze, Executive Director of the Missouri Federation of Conservation.

Statewide, youth harvested 2,566 birds over youth weekend. The top-harvest counties were Osage with 71, Miller with 65 and Texas with 64. By comparison, young hunters logged 2,881 turkeys during spring 2022 youth weekend.

Easton Keeton.

Rep. Sassmann capped the event again this year by making plaques for each kid who harvested turkeys with an official resolution capturing their special weekend.

Tommy Baxter

The event’s enduring success is primarily a product of the overall quality of experiences it has provided to attendees over the years. All hunts throughout the 14-year history of this event have occurred on private land. As organizers, we are indebted to the generosity of the private owners and guides who make it possible each year.

2023 Guides and Landlords included: RL Bennett, Brad Peters, Bill Haag, Sassmann, Steven Harrison, Brandon Butler, Dwayne Lucas, Jim Cihy, Cole Cihy, Schwartze, Tim Taylor, Hess, Logan Burk, David Guerrant, Jake Buxton, Mike Kehoe, Adam Voight, Burk, and Jason Isabelle.

Thanks again to everyone who made this year’s hunt special for the youth of Missouri. Most of the landowners and guides are dedicated members of the NWTF and CFM; without them, this event would not be possible. The extraordinary gift you voluntarily give year after year cannot be repaid. Please know that everyone involved is aware of this and that your efforts are really making a difference to the cherished memories you made possible.

Step Up Your Turkey Hunting Game With Swagger QD

Whether you’re waiting for an extended period in a “hung” longbeard or making the last call to separate a tom from his hens, having consistent rest is a must. A proper bipod, such as the Swagger Bipods QD42, prevents the hunter from holding a heavy weapon, allows hands-free use of a slate call, and is essential in a turkey hunter’s arsenal.

The Swagger Bipods QD System is a hybrid design, taking the Quick Adapt technology from Swagger’s original popular Hunter series and the Quick Detach design with the QD, creating the most versatile shooting system turkey hunters have ever experienced. By simply connecting the QD42s directly to a wide variety of shotguns, many turkey hunters now have the advantage of keeping their shotguns in the ready position for an extended period of time. Less movement in the ready position prevents the sharp eyes of the wild turkey from spotting the hunter as he attempts to hold the gun in an elevated position.

If you are a hunter who prefers to hunt blind or like to bring a child hunting, QDs may also be the answer. QD42s range from 14” to 42”, allowing all sizes of turkey hunters to have the advantage of a stable rest. For turkey hunting on the go or having to change position, the QD can be disengaged and reengaged with the push of a button. Weighing only 15 ounces makes it easy to move because there isn’t a significant amount of extra weight.

Every seasoned turkey hunter knows that a missing link can make or break a hunt. Since Swagger QD42 bipods provide turkey hunters with many advantages to outwit a mature spring eater, it’s no surprise that the QD42 has become one of the essential tools turkey hunters carry in their vests on every hunt. .

LOCAL WATERS- SUMMER FLY FISHING IN NORTH CAROLINA WITH WILD WATER FLY FISHING

SUMMER ADVENTURE ON THE WATAUGA RIVER

Fly fishing in North Carolina is something special; it is something that can be done all year long, and with each season comes its own beauty. When Old Man Winter finally decides to pack up and head out, he greets us with beautiful summer sun, blooming flowers, and hungry trout ready to eat. Fly fishing in the summer months in North Carolina is an epic way to spend the day. The best part is that you don’t need a lot of equipment to get out on the river and have a great day. From May through the end of August, my gear is very minimal, usually consisting of Chaco sandals, a pair of shorts, my Patagonia fishing shirt and vest, and my Wild Water rod and reel. The river temperature varies in those months between the low 40s and mid 50s depending on where you are. However, those water temperatures make trout active. In early spring, the local fish department stocks some of the rivers around western North Carolina with trout, depending on how far along you are in your fishing career. Some people prefer to fish in rivers that are stocked, and some prefer to venture out and find waters that are natural and not stocked. If this is your first time fly fishing and you want the best chance of getting your first catch, I suggest looking online at your local fisheries and seeing which rivers are being stocked and when. Doing this will only help you with your progression and as you gain more knowledge you can start venturing further afield in search of wild mountain trout.

One cool summer morning, I set out on a short day trip up the Watauga River, looking specifically for large rainbow trout. When I’m aiming for bigger rainbows, I have a few sections that I tend to go to on the Watauga River, where I’ve had luck in the past. During this trip, I brought with me my favorite flies, a couple of green ducks and my blue-feathered mayflies for the big and hungry ones. I quickly loaded up the Land Cruiser and headed to my place. When I arrived, I noticed that the clarity of the river was perfect; Standing next to my truck, I could see a couple of brook trout making their way up the river. When the fish are very active, you know it’s going to be a good day. I unloaded my gear and set up my Wild Water 3/4 weight bar, strapped on a blue fly and started up the river. Whenever I go after a big rainbow trout, I always approach the hunter and stay low and quiet because the last thing I want to do is scare one of these beautiful fish while trying to find a place to cast.

I found a perfect spot in the river where he went, and there was a solid log in the riverbed that I decided to use as cover to hide my shadow. I settled in right there and started pitching. Within minutes, he was hooked and fighting a good-sized rainbow trout. I kept my rod tip pointing up and started to wobble. As I pulled the fish closer to me I could see the beautiful colors flashing as he struggled and resisted getting into my net. When I got it off the net, I was speechless. I stood there in disbelief; this was the biggest and most beautiful rainbow trout I have ever caught. This fish was approximately 14 inches. I was beyond ecstatic to catch my personal record, but overall just grateful to have caught such an amazing fish. I gently released this bow back into the river, feeling emotions of gratitude and happiness. When the stars align and you can catch a fish that brings you so much joy, you will always and forever continue to chase that feeling wherever it takes you. That feeling, to this day, continues to take me places I’ve always dreamed of. As you gain more knowledge and skills for this trade, allow yourself to venture out and find new streams, rivers, or creeks and embrace those adventures; Even if you don’t catch a single fish, enjoy those moments and remember to leave these waters cleaner and better than you found them for the next angler after their dream catch.

Huk’s Drew Benton completes great comeback to win Bassmaster Elite at Lake Murray

Huk’s Performance Fishing Team is committed to designing apparel for the die-hard angler, and no angler embodies that commitment better than Drew Benton. With a phenomenal four-day total of 87 pounds flat, Benton overcame a slow Saturday to make a miraculous comeback. After just a 14-pound semi, Benton weighed in his low-five limit on Championship Sunday at 26 pounds, 7 ounces for a grand finish, clinching the second blue trophy of his career.

“I woke up four times last night just mad,” he described after a disappointing weigh-in on Saturday. “I woke up, looked at the weights, and I was about 5 pounds. Someone weighed 26 pounds this week. That was my goal weight, 25 or 26”.

Drew Benton needed every ounce of faith to pull off the impressive feat of winning on Sunday. “I started, not doubting myself, but wondering if it would happen again,” said Benton, who earned his first Elite Series victory five years ago at Lake Travis in Texas. “I finished second in an Elite, and in an Open I should have won. Am I a snake? Can I close the deal more? So this feels great.”

“Drew embodies our vision of a Huk angler. It is clear that he loves this sport, as well as the opportunity to represent our brand on the national stage,” said Paige Hill-Murphy, community manager for Huk Performance Fishing. “We are very excited about this win for him and his family and we look forward to the rest of the year.”

Benton trusts Huk clothing to keep him cool and comfortable on the water year-round. From shirts, pants, outerwear, raincoats, and footwear, Huk has anglers covered no matter the season or activity.

Marolina Outdoor Inc. was founded to provide a deeply rooted product experience across all outdoor categories. Our innovative designs and technology-focused products create the foundation for our authentic outdoor apparel. Huk clothing represents a fresh take on and unique understanding of the needs of fishing, offering functional styles that appeal to anglers of all ages. NOMAD is motivated to provide quality clothing so hunters can maximize their hunting experiences and provide sustenance regardless of the size of the game or where their activities take them.
