ASA Urges Florida Legislature to Support Fishermen’s Rights

Yesterday, American Game Fishing Association (ASA) Director of Southeast Fisheries Policy Martha Guyas appeared at a press conference on the steps of the old Florida State Capitol, urging the Florida state legislature to pass legislation enshrining the right to hunt and fish in the Florida state constitution (Florida HJR 1157; Florida SJR 1234).

“This legislation helps us maintain Florida’s sport fishing culture while promoting conservation and ensuring future access to our vibrant fisheries,” Guyas said. “People value what they understand, and the connection to nature that people gain while fishing helps anglers understand the importance of conservation to support healthy fishing and fishing opportunities.”

Guyas noted that more than 4.3 million anglers fish Florida each year, contributing nearly $14 billion in economic output and supporting more than 120,000 jobs.

Once both houses pass the resolution, voters will decide whether to amend the state constitution by adding language that states in part that fishing and hunting “shall be forever preserved as a public right and a preferred means of responsibly managing and controlling.” fishing and wildlife. ”

The press conference was organized by the International Order of Theodore Roosevelt (IOTR) and was attended by fishermen and hunters from Florida. Speakers included IOTR Executive Director Luke Hilgemann, Southeastern States Congressional Athlete Caucus Senior Chair Mark Lance, Florida State Senator Jason Brodeur (R-Sanford) and Florida State Representative Lauren Melo (R-Naples), who are the main sponsors of the respective resolutions

Guyas concluded his remarks by thanking Senator Brodeur and Representative Melo for their leadership on the legislation. Additional information about ASA’s efforts in Florida and Keep Florida Fishing, ASA’s Florida advocacy arm, can be found here.

The sport fishing industry supports legislation that protects the use of traditional tackle

On April 18, 2023, US Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) introduced the Protection of Access for Hunters and Fishermen Act (S. 1185). If enacted, this legislation would prohibit federal land management agencies, namely the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, from prohibiting the use of traditional tackle and ammunition on public lands unless such action is supported by the best available science and state fish and wildlife agencies. The companion legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives earlier this year, led by Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.).

The bill ensures that sportsmen’s access is not unfairly barred and that anglers across America can be confident in the performance and affordability of lead. Protecting the traditional gear is essential to ensure that anglers can continue to enjoy this sport.

The bill was introduced in response to a recent FWS rule that would ban traditional rigging on some National Wildlife Refuges.

“The sport fishing industry thanks Senators Daines for introducing the Hunter and Angler Access Protection Act of 2023,” said ASA President Glenn Hughes. “Decisions about what gear anglers can use should be based on science, not emotion. This bill will uphold state fish and wildlife agencies as the proper authorities to make science-based decisions about lead fishing rigs.”

Hughes added that this legislation is important to ensure that ASA achieves its goal of ensuring that America’s public lands remain open and accessible for generations to come.

Additional information on this legislation can be found on the ASA website. ASA also encourages supporters to express their support for this legislation and urge their senators to co-sponsor this bill through our Keep America Fishing Action Center, which can be found here.
