PREPARE FOR YOUR NEXT FISHING ADVENTURE: 5 ESSENTIAL TOOLS

UP YOUR FISHING GAME WITH SMITH CONSUMER PRODUCTS, ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR EVERY ANGLER

You may have all the rods, reels, lines, and lures at your disposal, but do you have the essential fishing tools to really enhance your fishing experience? Look no further as we present the five key products every adventurer needs to master the art of fishing and make the most of your time on the water.

PLIERS

Topping the list of essential tools is none other than a versatile pair of pliers. Without a doubt, this practical tool accompanies anglers on all their fishing expeditions. From carefully unhooking fish, crimping barbs and effortlessly changing hooks to managing various rigging tasks, pliers prove to be one of the most used fishing accessories hidden in your tackle bag.

What makes a suitable fishing plier? Corrosion resistance is one of the essential characteristics of a set of fishing pliers. Since they see a fair amount of time around water, aluminum, stainless steel, or some type of corrosion resistant coating is an essential feature.

Other important features to note are the addition of side cutters and crimping channels, the length of the jaws, a split ring nose, and whether they have a scabbard or bead attachment. That’s a lot to consider for a single piece of equipment!

Here are some great options from Smith’s Consumer Products.

SMITH’S ALUMINUM FISHING PLIERS WITH SHARPENER (50966)

One of the most feature rich pliers available, Smith’s Regal River Aluminum Fishing Pliers are made from 6061 aluminum with stainless steel jaw inserts. CLAMPS AND HEMOSTATS

Forceps are one of those tools that almost fit into the pliers category. They just tend to be used for more delicate jobs like removing a small fly or micro jig from a fish’s jaw. They also work fantastic for removing the spines on the smaller imitations often used for trout and panfish. Most quality forceps also have a nifty locking feature that is useful for holding the fly or jig while you tie it to the fishing line. Some even come with a handy set of scissors so you can cut your offer when it’s time to switch up your tactics.

STEAK KNIFE

One of the most rewarding results of a fishing trip is savoring freshly caught fillets in a hot cast iron skillet! Can you imagine a more pleasurable conclusion to a fruitful day than sharing your catch with friends and family over a refreshing post-adventure drink?

The characteristics to look for in a fillet knife are the length and flexibility of the blade. If you’re cleaning ½ pound crappie, you don’t need a heavy, stiff 8” fillet knife to get the job done! Conversely, if you are cleaning a 25 pound king salmon, a 6” flexible fillet knife is probably not the right choice. Corrosion resistance is also an essential feature for any fillet knife. Carbon steel knives have no place in this liquid environment unless they have a substantial corrosion resistant coating.

Here are some Smith’s offerings to tackle your next trip to the steak table!

SMITH’S 7-INCH STAINLESS STEEL FILLET KNIFE (51055)

Smith’s RegalRiver 7″ Fillet Knife has a non-slip TPE soft grip, ergonomic handle, and breathable protective sheath. It features a razor sharp 400 series stainless steel blade.

While you’re making that epic catch you’ve been dying to brag about, why settle for anything less than a foolproof way to handle the prize? That’s where a reliable set of fish tongs comes in handy, especially if your catch is feisty with razor-sharp teeth. It’s all about keeping things simple and safe while you unhook your sneaky foe and snap a killer photo for the scrapbooks. So gear up and get ready for the ultimate fishing adventure!

In fact, if we were to examine ancient cave paintings, we might find evidence to the contrary. To avoid any accusation of dishonesty, it is essential to have a scale, a tape measure and a telephone on hand to prove the authenticity of our catch.

SMITH’S 50 POUND DIGITAL SCALE (51291)

Smith’s Regal River 50lb Fishing Scale is strong and durable for a wide range of uses. The scale features a durable load cell ideal for panfish to largemouth bass. The hook can be used with Smith’s Fish Tongs or directly in the fish’s mouth.

MSRP $8.99

The next time you embark on a fishing adventure, don’t forget to pack these essential fishing tools to make your time on the water that much more efficient and enjoyable. With the right equipment, you’ll be able to catch bigger fish and have some great stories to share with your fellow anglers.

Work begins for the Timber Transportation Pilot

EDGEFIELD, SC — Work began March 29 under the new 20-year national principal management agreement between the NWTF and the USDA Forest Service. The Forest Service and California Deer Association partners began harvesting timber as part of a 2,746-acre timber removal. project in the Klamath National Forest located in Northern California.

“It’s great to be a part of such an incredible association that is driven to do this much-needed work,” said Dale MacDougall, director of state projects for the California Deer Association. “From the leadership and support of the USFS, both nationally and regionally, to the welcoming nature and strength of the NWTF family, along with industry partners, the energy has been incredible. There are so many people committed to carrying some of this workload, and they have all done an incredible job of doing it. This is a perfect example of partners sharing a vision for large-scale restoration to benefit the health of wildlife and forests.”

The wood harvested in this project is ready to start its journey by car, a method considered “old fashioned” in today’s world of multimodal transportation. However, the NWTF views this antiquated method of transportation through a lens that considers the ecological, social, and other values of the work being performed. With this timber transport pilot, the NWTF is testing a proof of concept that can create a new model for implementing the crucial work ahead.

“We are proud to be a part of this innovation and partnership to benefit local communities, industry and landscape resiliency,” said Rachel Smith, forest supervisor for the Klamath National Forest. “This partnership bolsters the Forest’s efforts to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires for rural communities as part of the Forest Service’s wildfire crisis strategy.”

Northern California, including the Klamath National Forest, is notorious for devastating wildfires, partly blamed on forests that are thick with trees. The Forest Service reports that many areas in the Klamath National Forest exceed 500 trees per acre, resulting in interlocking crowns and diminishing growth. These conditions cause trees to become suppressed and weakened, eventually becoming susceptible to stress and insect/disease related mortality. These small ladder fuels, combined with accumulation of fuels on the ground from fallen dead trees, increase the risk of catastrophic losses from wildfires.

“The severe and uncharacteristic wildfires we’ve seen in recent decades are truly a wildfire crisis,” said Tom Spezze, NWTF’s national director of field conservation/state policy. “Forest health is no longer just a natural resource problem or a forest problem, it is a national emergency, a watershed health problem, and a human health and security crisis.”

Restoring forests to more appropriate tree densities, ages, and size classes is intended to decrease wildfire risk, essential for California residents and people living in or near forested areas throughout the West.

“The NWTF is committed to helping the USFS by being part of the solution to the wildfire crisis,” Spezze said. “And while the focus is on communities, severe wildfires are also converting wooded wildlife habitats to brush or grassland, reducing the value of wildlife habitat.”

By removing surplus trees from regions like the Klamath National Forest, a fire-resistant forest can be developed, able to recover after a fire and foster a naturally healthy ecosystem for wildlife, improve water quality and quantity, and provide more outdoor recreational activities.

Along with timber harvest, the project involves 1,605 acres of brush mowing and juniper felling, 592 acres of juniper reduction, 264 acres of plantation thinning, and 866 acres of chewing for fuel reduction and habitat improvement work for wildlife in the forest.

Once the groundwork is complete, the forest products will be transported by rail cars as the second component of this multifaceted approach to forest restoration. The logs must first be transported to Gilchrist Forest Products in Gilchrist, Oregon, where they will be debarked to remove bark beetles. The debarked logs will then be inspected and transported to a rail terminal in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where they will receive another inspection before being loaded onto railcars for transport to Wyoming.

Once on the wagons, the logs will begin their nearly month-long journey to Devils Tower Forest Products Inc. in Hulett, Wyoming. This small-town community relies heavily on the Black Hills lumber mill as a critical economic driver. Transporting the lumber to Wyoming will help provide a sustainable supply of lumber to support the continued operation of the mill, creating a stable economy in the area.

“The fact that, in addition to restoring forests, we are supporting a community, makes this project really special,” Spezze said.

Overall, the project aims to restore forests, enhance biodiversity and protect other natural resources while benefiting all stakeholders involved.

“This only works where there is a surplus of wood,” Spezze said. “The NWTF is committed to making sure all partners are complete. We realize there is no point in a pilot that is not equitable to local contractors and businesses.”

CZ Shadow 2 and Shadow 2 Orange – now more affordable than ever!

The CZ Shadow 2 and Enhanced Shadow 2 Orange excel in practical shooting competitions and are now more affordable, starting at $1099. In matches like the USPSA and IPSC Production Division, where competitors need speed and accuracy to win, Shadow 2 pistols provide a competitive edge. Both pistols come from a lineage of high-performance DA/SA firearm pistols, inheriting winning features from the competition. The Orange model includes the match-grade features found in Shadow 2, plus several crucial upgrades: Orange offers custom pistol performance of a production pistol with an MSRP of $1699.

Engineers specifically designed the Shadow 2 race gun with an impressive list of improvements over its predecessors. CZ started with one goal: to create the perfect sport shooting pistol. They lengthened the slide, increasing the sight radius of the pistol and making it easier to land accurate hits. Adding an extended dust cover to its frame increased weight and shifted the balance slightly forward, damping recoil and reducing muzzle hop. Additionally, the slide tapers as it approaches the muzzle, cutting weight above the bore centerline, keeping the pistol flat as it rotates. The Shadow 2 uses the proven CZ 75 ergonomic grip angle shape that provides a natural aim while the aggressive texture secures the pistol in your hand.

In contrast, the Shadow 2 Orange sports bright orange grips, magazine cradles, and magazine release. CZ wanted to point out that this model was unique. The beauty of the Shadow 2 Orange is more than skin deep – the gun is also more accurate. CZ polished the barrel and fitted an externally installed removable bushing. The new set of bushings tightened the tolerances between the barrel and the slide, resulting in smaller groups on the paper.

Other precision improvements on the Orange come from manual slide adjustment at the factory. The slider rails start out oversized and slowly fit into the frame until it rotates as if it were sliding on glass. An improved trigger with a short reset comes standard on the Shadow 2 Orange. Less trigger pull shaves off precious milliseconds, meaning follow-up shots are quicker. The barrel and hammer are polished to help achieve a smoother shooting experience. It’s all about speed and Shadow 2 Orange delivers.

The Shadow 2 and Shadow 2 Orange are superior competition pistols, loaded with high-performance features that competitors need to win at new price points. Head to head, the Shadow 2 Orange has a clear performance advantage, but either is a solid choice for action pistol shooting sports.

Ranew Outdoor Equipment offers a full line of implements for all your food plot needs.

The Firminator G3 is by far the most versatile piece of equipment in the industry, enabling the entire process of planting a food plot—ploughing, planting, and soil baling—from start to finish with a single implement. However, for those who already own tillage equipment but still want all the other features and benefits of a Firminator, there is a standalone Firmeeder.

Like the G3 unit, the Firmeeder features Firminator’s precision seeding system, which can handle any size seed from large corn, soybeans, peas and sunflowers to the smallest of clovers without the need to change seed hoppers. The easily adjustable metering openings of the precision sowing system ensure that the seeds are distributed in the correct amount.

Because the system is driven from the ground, seed is metered in relation to travel speed, allowing the user to control seed rate. The optional seed hopper agitator keeps seeds well mixed, preventing smaller seeds from straining out too quickly. Thus, it evenly distributes seed mixes with extreme size differences in a single pass. When the unit stops, an automatic shutoff prevents unnecessary spillage that occurs with other hopper types.

Simply spreading seeds is not enough. Post-dispersal packaging is also essential, ensuring good seed-soil contact for better germination rates and protection from wind drift. The Firmiseeder also has the Firminator’s commercial grade culti-packer. As the Firmeeder advances, the seeds are dropped into a specially designed baffle that distributes them fully before the culti-packer rolls over the seeds and compacts the soil.

Product characteristics:

  • Handles seeds of all sizes.
  • Oversized seed hopper
  • Seed metering openings
  • Seed size adjustments in 1/16-inch increments
  • Deflector specially designed for better distribution
  • Distributes the seed directly in front of the culti-packer for optimum seed to soil contact
  • Protects the seed from wind drift.
  • Only distribute seeds while Firmeeder is rolling to avoid waste.

Made in the USA.

Every Firmiseeder is proudly made right here in the good old USA at Ranew’s Outdoor Equipment plant in Milner, Georgia. Their welders and fabricators combine years of experience with high-end tooling to produce each frame and seed box. ROE painters then use top-of-the-line powder coating material on manual and automatic powder coating lines to provide a superior finish.

For more information on the entire line of Firminator products and accessories, see their website at www.thefirminator.com.

Ranew Outdoor Gear Introduces The Firminator – The Firminator is by far the most versatile gear in the industry. The operator can choose from a wide range of angle and pitch adjustments to perform many different functions.

Delta Waterfowl to Host the 2023 World Duck Song Championship at Duck Hunters EXPO

A high-energy contest sponsored by Mack’s Prairie Wings and Drake Waterfowl will crown a world champion call cut on July 29.

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA—The Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters EXPO will host the World Cut Duck Singing Championship at 12:00 pm on July 29 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Sponsored by Mack’s Prairie Wings and Drake Waterfowl, the event is produced by renowned champions Jim Ronquest and Heath Vanlandingham.

The court call is a specially modified duck call long preferred by timber hunters in Arkansas and on the Lower Illinois River. Inspired by this story, Ronquest and Vanlandingham developed a quiz that requires the use of these particular calls.

“On behalf of the World Cutdown Duck Calling Championship, LLC, we look forward to being a part of this year’s Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters Expo,” said Ronquest. “Last year’s event was a huge success and this year’s will only be better.”

Classical Arkansas-style duckcall was introduced in 1904 by Philip Olt of Pekin, Illinois. In the 1950s and 1960s, duck hunters began individually modifying the call, allowing them to customize the volume and pitch. These modified Olt calls, called “cutouts”, were tremendously successful and their popularity with hunters eventually led to commercial production by major duck call manufacturers.

An estimated 40 or more people will take the Delta EXPO stage to compete for a first prize payment of at least $1,000, a shotgun, a Drake Waterfowl gear pack, and the prestigious title of World Cutdown Calling Champion. Cash prizes will be paid to the top three finishers and prizes will be awarded to the top five places. All money from the entrance fee will be paid. The cost of admission is $50 and competitors can register in person from 10 am to 11:30 am at the EXPO. And of course, EXPO attendees will be treated to the best hunting style of these avid waterfowl hunters and call competitors.

The 2022 contest took place in the midst of the inaugural Duck Hunters EXPO, with Byron Womack of Scottsboro, Alabama claiming the prestigious title over a field of 32 expert competitors.

“Last year’s World Cut Duck Singing Championships wowed the crowds at the EXPO,” said Brad Heidel, Delta Waterfowl’s senior director of marketing. “Competitors are faced with a real world hunting scenario that they have to ‘solve’ with their own scenario call routine. It’s tough competition and an event Delta is proud to host.”

Presented by Federal Premium Ammunition, the Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters EXPO will feature three continuous stages of education, entertainment and excitement, plus 80,000 square feet of waterfowl exhibits. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit deltawaterfowlexpo.com.

Rigby Recorder Karen Wallace Wins Cartier Award of Excellence

Renowned London gunsmith, John Rigby & Co, is proud to announce that their talented engraver, Karen Wallace, has won the prestigious Jacques Cartier Award for Excellence, presented at the 2023 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship and Design Awards. Karen entered a plaque Rigby bolt-action rifle magazine floor she had made, which was beautifully carved with scrollwork.

The Cartier Award for Excellence is a national award that recognizes exceptional artistry and craftsmanship in jewelry making and related fields. Independent jewelers and artisans from around the world are invited to submit their work for consideration. Of all the gold medal winners, only one piece is selected as a winner of Cartier excellence. This award has been given for 65 years, but has only been awarded 43 times, as it is only awarded if there is a clear winner who meets the highest standards of excellence.

Karen Wallace’s winning entry is particularly notable because it is the only time anyone has won with an item that is not made of gold or silver. It is also the only engraving of guns or anything related to gun making to have won the award. Karen’s beautiful scroll work on the Rigby bolt action rifle’s magazine floor plate impressed the judges with its exceptional quality and attention to detail.

Rigby has a long and distinguished history as one of the world’s leading arms manufacturers. Founded in 1775, the company has been at the forefront of weapons manufacturing technology for more than two centuries. Today, they continue to produce some of the best sporting rifles and shotguns available, using the latest manufacturing techniques and the highest quality materials.

Rigby’s managing director, Marc Newton, commented: “We are proud to have Karen Wallace as part of their team of skilled craftsmen. Her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft are a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence. The Cartier Award of Excellence is a well-deserved recognition of Karen’s exceptional talent and the excellent quality of her work. Her team congratulates her on her achievement and looks forward to continuing to produce the best sporting rifles and shotguns for the most demanding customers around the world.”

Karen added: “I didn’t even know I was up for it until that point, I wasn’t even paying attention! I really had no idea she would consider herself, I’m over the moon. I was shaking when they called my name. She was thinking, ‘I don’t want to fall down the stairs!’
