New Report Urges Congress to Modernize Laws and Increase Funding to Combat Invasive Aquatic Species

Increased collaboration at the federal, state, local and tribal levels is critical to the prevention and eradication of AIS, the report says.

A new report from the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Commission has been released urging Congress to modernize laws, increase federal funding, and improve coordination at the federal, state, local, and tribal levels to combat harmful aquatic invasive species. The report, which was based on consultations with leading voices in natural resource policy, scientists, federal, state and tribal representatives, and recreation stakeholders, urges Congress to direct agencies to identify regulatory gaps and improve engagement public.

The report calls for the exchange of information and the development of data-based solutions to enable the Aquatic Nuisance Task Force (ANSTF) to better coordinate the prevention, early detection and eradication of AIS. The report highlights emerging risks from the introduction of AIS, and calls for modernization of existing laws that address AIS, such as the Lacey Act and the Non-Indian Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act.

“From invasive carp to green crab to didymus, AIS are one of the top threats to the conservation of fisheries and the nation’s $148 billion recreational fishing industry,” said Connor Bevan, Inland Fisheries Policy Manager. from ASA. “Reported by leading biologists, fisheries managers and policy experts, the ISA Commission’s landmark report presents comprehensive recommendations to better control the spread of ISA across the country and prevent future introductions.”

“Aquatic invasive species are a tremendous threat to our nation’s waters, causing billions of dollars in economic damage and unquantifiable, often irreversible damage to ecosystems. I commend the outdoor industry for taking the threat of AIS seriously and for presenting a roadmap for effective policy,” said AIS Commissioner Dr. Marc Gaden, Director of Communications for the Outdoors Commission. Great Lakes Fisheries and associate professor at Michigan State University. “I am particularly pleased to see that many of the recommendations focus on the importance of harnessing science to affect policy. I urge Congress to act on these recommendations so our nation can take immediate action on the prevention and control of invasive species.”

The report says laws must maintain access for boaters and fishermen, balancing safe use with the long-term health of natural resources. Mark Menendez, professional fisherman and member of the AIS commission, applauded the commission’s report, noting the importance of the findings and addressing the threat of AIS.

“Access to healthy waters, safe use and the long-term health of our natural resources is always on the minds of anglers and boaters while on the water,” said Mark Menendez, Bassmaster Elite Series Professional. “Ensuring the long-term health of our waterways is crucial to lessening the economic burden that aquatic invasive species unfortunately place on communities affected by these harmful species. Control, eradication and thriving beneficial industries will play a key role in collaborating to reduce many harmful AIS from our aquatic systems.”

The American public also has a role to play in this fight. The report calls on natural resource managers to maintain and strengthen public participation in ISA issues. Coordinated, science-based education on AIS prevention is key to effectively stopping the spread of AIS in our waters.

Additionally, the report recommends that Congress should:

  • Authorize the ANSTF as an independent federal entity that can receive and grant appropriated federal funds OR ensure that all federal agencies have sufficient funding to manage and operate an AIS Program with dedicated staff.
  • Appropriate funding for proven technologies such as barriers and deterrents to invasive fish, employing techniques such as bioacoustic fish fences, gas bubble screens and electric fencing, or other appropriate technologies in conjunction with traditional physical structures in interjurisdictional waterways and waters of regional importance and national according to the priority of ANSTF sites
  • Provide additional funding for appropriate agencies to expand signage and visual and textual cues, and work to address language barriers at boat launches and fishing access points to induce AIS prevention activities, including enforcement actions. decontamination “Clean, Drain, Dry” and “Don’t Let it Loose” messages.

An executive summary of the report can be viewed here, and the report can be read in its entirety here.

Founded by scientists, conservationists, fishermen, boaters, business leaders, and policy experts, the ISA Commission has convened leading experts to identify federal policy solutions to prevent the introduction and control the spread of invasive species in our nation’s waters, which culminates in a detailed report. .

Safe turkey hunting is not an accident

Spring turkey youth shotgun season begins April 8 and Hunter Nikolai, Nebraska hunter education coordinator with the Nebraska Park and Game Commission, reminds hunters to always practice the four basic rules of safety with Firearms.

The spring archery season for Nebraska turkeys opens March 25 and the spring archery season opens April 15. All spring archery seasons close at sunset on May 31.

“Turkey hunting brings excitement and anticipation for many, but never let your emotions get in the way of a safe hunt this spring,” Nikolai said.

The four basic rules of firearm safety are:

  • Treat each firearm as if it were loaded;
  • Always point the barrel of your firearm in a safe direction;
  • Be sure of your goal, what is in front of it and what is beyond it; and
  • Keep your finger off the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.

Spring turkey hunters should also practice these safety tips:

  • “Stalking” or “harvesting” turkeys with a tail fan or strutting decoy is a popular hunting technique. Never shoot on motion, always positively identify your target and check your surroundings for other hunters before picking up or moving your lures.
  • If you meet another turkey hunter, stay still and speak loudly and clearly to announce your presence. Never make movements to indicate your presence.
  • When hunting turkeys in the woods, sit against a tree or stump wider than your shoulders and higher than your head.
  • Do not wear white, blue, or red clothing while turkey hunting, as these colors are displayed by male turkeys in the spring.
  • Carry decoys and any caught birds in a bag when moving or packing them on or off your hunting ground. Wear a bright orange cap and vest when on the move to increase your visibility to other hunters.
  • Check yourself for ticks after a hunt, especially along the waist and in the hair. Permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing, and other hunting gear to help reduce exposure to ticks.

“Hunting is one of the safest outdoor recreational activities, thanks in large part to the many volunteer bowhunter and hunter education instructors in Nebraska communities,” Nikolai said. “Be sure to review these basic safety practices with your friends and family before you head out into the field this spring.”

Several changes have been implemented for the turkey season. Read about them on page 5 of the Turkey Guide at digital.outdoornebraska.gov/i/1489064-turkey-guide-2023-web/0.

Team Gold Tip® dominates at 2023 NFAA Indoor Nationals

gold tip®, the industry leader in carbon arrows and bolts, congratulates the team’s shooters on their strong performance at the 2023 NFAA Indoor Nationals, held March 24-26 in Louisville, Kentucky. Shooters from the Gold Tip team dominated the field, winning both the men’s professional and senior professional divisions, in addition to the men’s and women’s amateur divisions.

Newcomer to Team Gold Tip Levi Reitsma took the top spot in the Pro Division after a tense tiebreaker with 20 of the best male archers in the sport. After achieving a perfect score of 600 with 120X in the qualifying round, Reitsma was able to stay out of the field to take first place. His teammate Kyle Douglas was ranked number two. Both team members opted to use Gold Tip Triple X Pros in the qualifying round, later switching to Gold Tip Pierce Tour in the tiebreaker.

“Most pro shooters choose big-diameter shafts like Gold Tip’s Triple X Pros for their qualifying rounds, but when it comes to the shootout, the scoring shifts to ‘inside-out’ scoring,” said Tim Gillingham, manager of the shooting staff for Gold Tip and Bee Stinger. . “That’s where smaller diameter arrows like Pierce Tours come in. ‘Inside out’ means that if you touch the score line you get the lowest value”.

Meanwhile, in the Senior Pro competition, Gold Tip Pro Staffer Randy Morocco took first place after switching to Gold Tip shafts just two tournaments ago. Morocco became the only senior pro shooter to shoot a perfect 600 with 120X and a first place win. Gold Tip teammate Jimmy Butts took third place in the Senior Pro division.

Team Gold Tip also came out on top in both of the amateur divisions of the competition. Christian Clark won the Amateur Men’s while his teammate Meg Curtis won the Amateur Women’s.

Hi Mountain Seasonings makes preparing bear back straps simple and delicious

Author Jen Selinsky once wrote, “The promise of spring is enough to get anyone through the bitter winter!” During the dark winter months, a hunter’s thoughts turn to spring, and for many, that means hunting black bears. Harvesting a black bear means more than just a cool rug. When properly cared for in the field (you dress and care for the meat like you would any prized deer, elk, or other big game) and carefully prepared at home, bear meat is delicious and good for you. In general, bear meat tastes similar to venison meat, although it often tastes a bit sweeter than ungulate meat. It is dark red in color and, in terms of texture, resembles pork, albeit with a slightly coarser grain.

And just like deer, elk, or wild boar, one of the tastiest cuts of the black bear is the back strap. One of the best ways to prepare a black bear tenderloin is to smoke it with the new recipe for Smoked Bear Tenderloin with Hi Mountain Rib Rub from Hi Mountain Seasonings. Made from a delicious blend of paprika, dehydrated garlic, salt, dehydrated onion, honey granules (refinery syrup, honey), black pepper, mustard, cayenne pepper, and soybean oil, Hi Mountain Rib Rub adds a tangy flavor to your bear tenderloin that makes it stand out from more traditional preparation methods.

The process is simple. All you need is a trimmed black bear back strap, a can of coffee flavored brew, Hi Mountain Rib Rub, salt, freshly ground coffee, ½ cup maple syrup, and your smoker or pellet grill. Be sure to skim the fat off the back strap, then place it in a non-porous container, add the coffee brew, and marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours. Remove, pat dry with a paper towel, and sprinkle salt to taste on all sides of the roast along with a liberal amount of Hi Mountain Seasonings Rib Rub and coffee grounds on all sides as well. Put it in a non-porous container and place it in the fridge for a couple of hours. Remove from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about an hour. While you’re at it, preheat your smoker or smoker pellet grill to 250 degrees. Place the bear meat in the pellet smoker/roaster. During the smoking process, glaze the roast with a little maple syrup on both sides of the roast. Smoke it until the internal temperature of the roast reaches 160º F. Slice it thinly and enjoy!

The suggested retail price for 10 oz. the shaker bottle of Hi Mountain Seasonings Rib Rub is $10.99. It can be purchased at grocery stores and outdoor retailers across the country or conveniently online at www.himtnjerky.com. This is just one of dozens of delicious free wild game recipes and an incredible number of different spices, seasonings, sausage and jerky kits, and much more found on the Hi Mountain Seasonings website, www.himtnjerky.com .

Spring Minerals for Deer

Spring is in the air, and with the new season comes the long-awaited warmer temperatures and lots of new growth. For deer hunters, growing season means much more than green grass and new leaves. Spring is when whitetail deer begin to develop their antlers for the upcoming season.

Many hunters believe that the time to feed deer minerals to improve their general health and increase antler growth is during the latter part of summer before the fall hunting season begins. Unfortunately, this assumption is false, and hunters miss out on the most crucial time of year for improving deer health. A whitetail doe needs a boost in her mineral intake as she prepares to give birth to her young later in the spring. As for the males, they need an increase in mineral intake during late winter and early spring, when the first signs of antler growth begin to appear as a spring flower. To get the most bang for your buck this fall, now is the time to start using Big and J’s Headrush.

Deer need minerals to thrive; Phosphorus and calcium are two of the most important for antler growth and bone strength. Big and J’s Headrush™ has these minerals and key trace elements such as zinc, copper and manganese. These minerals are not only important for antler growth, but studies have shown that a healthier female will produce more milk for young fawns. Headrush becomes a one stop shop for minerals the entire herd needs to thrive, not just for antler growth. Headrush is also bioavailable, meaning the trace minerals are readily absorbed by deer rather than excreted.

Because a deer’s body mass and strength suffer after the rut, the need for a mineral boost is vital. Add to that the need for more nutrients to start growing your new antlers, and it’s easy to see why spring is the most crucial time for hunters to supply them with the necessary Big and J’s Headrush minerals.

Headrush is packed with bioavailable trace elements that a deer’s newly developed antlers crave during the spring. Big and J have added a lot of vital calcium to boost antler growth, which deer cannot find in their natural environment. To ensure deer return to their mineral sites frequently, Headrush has the same powerful, far-reaching scent as Big and J’s popular BB2.

With the increased aroma of BB2 and the added salt that deer naturally love, Headrush will not only help add inches of bone, but the aroma and flavor will keep deer close while you literally toy with their heads.

Available in 12 lb bags

Retail: $24.99
