KASTKING KESTREL ELITE

A growing trend in the US, the Bait Finesse System (BFS) allows anglers to approach bass fishing differently in high pressure water while conserving strength, maximizing casting distance and improving accuracy . Fine fishing with a baitcaster allows the angler to manipulate the reel, giving better casting control and stealthy approach while casting lures as light as 1/16 oz on a 4 pound test. The angler can cast efficiently with small, fine baits such as Ned rigs, micro jigs, and small swimbaits. The FAF (Flyout Arc Finesse) braking system automatically adjusts to slow the reel and prevent kickback, ensuring a smooth and controlled casting experience. There is also an external fingertip drag adjustment dial to adjust reel speeds for smaller baits.

CHARACTERISTICS:

  • full magnesium frame
  • carbon side covers
  • Hard anodized 7075 aluminum main gear and shaft
  • Carbon disc drag system
  • Flyout Arc Finesse (FAF) Brake System

Built around the solid strength of the CNC-machined aluminum frame and carbon fiber side covers, the MegaJaws Elite feature a “Perfect Palm” design that provides a super low profile that fits in either hand.

Few events are as frustrating as the dreaded backlash, also known as a “pro overshoot,” when out on the water. KastKing has virtually eliminated time consuming backlash with the “Auto Adjusting Magnetic Braking System” (AMB). The rotary switch is a big plus as it offers instant reel engagement when fishing in close quarters.

CHARACTERISTICS:

  • CNC machined aluminum frame
  • Low profile, palm-friendly design
  • Self-adjusting magnetic braking system
  • Flippin’ switch for close range fishing
  • DigiCut 7075 Aerospace Aluminum Main Gears

MSRP: $129.99

A SMOOTER FISHING EXPERIENCE!

MEGAJAWS ELITE SPINNING REEL

The KastKing MegaJaws Elite 2500 Spinning Reel is the best choice for anglers using light lines and smaller lures, such as casting small hair jigs or casting shots for bass. The shallow, lightweight spool design limits line spool, allowing for longer, smoother casts. Zinc alloy main drive gear provides strength at low weight. The stainless steel line roller enhances smooth retrieves and prevents the line from breaking under pressure, while the double-shielded stainless steel bearings provide smooth performance and corrosion resistance season after season.

CHARACTERISTICS:

  • 6.5oz
  • Shallow fineness spool
  • Aluminum pinion drive gear with carbon fiber drag
  • 10 + 1 stainless steel ball bearings
  • CNC machined aluminum handle

Vital investment in wild turkey research Coming Soon

EDGEFIELD, SC — The NWTF is accepting applications for its Wild Turkey Research Request for Proposals, a program that facilitates and makes investments in support of priority wild turkey research projects across the country.

In June 2022, the NWTF allocated $360,000 for seven critical wild turkey research projects through the RFP program. Now the organization is accepting new project proposals to continue addressing the population decline and to further investigate how to best manage the resource in the future.

“We are at a junction where many new questions are being raised about the ecology of the wild turkey,” said Mark Hatfield, director of conservation services for the NWTF. “Disease, population dynamics, habitat use, nest success, hunter influence – there are many areas that need further understanding for optimal conservation and management; This is where the investigation comes in.”

The NWTF invites proposals that investigate the dynamics and drivers of the “post-restoration era,” as well as those that address one or more of the following research priorities:

  • Development of regional and national estimates of population and abundance.
  • Evaluation and development of habitat management practices and habitat conditions that would increase wild turkey nest success and chick survival.
  • Investigation of underlying diseases of wild turkeys and their impacts on wild turkey populations.
  • Understand the effects of harvest management strategies and season structure on wild turkey populations.
  • Survival of wild turkeys (adults and poults) and correlated causes of mortality.

All projects must have a minimum leverage ratio of 3 to 1 and can have a duration of up to three years. Applicants are strongly encouraged to obtain the endorsement of representative state NWTF chapters and representative state wildlife agencies as they investigate one or more of the above topics.

Applicants must submit proposals no later than May 1, 2023 for consideration. Project funding awards will be announced during the NWTF National Leadership Conference, June 2023.

Download application form.

Proposals will be scored and ranked by the NWTF Technical Committee and NWTF conservation staff based on project applicability, scientific rigor, partner participation, and guaranteed matching funds.

The NWTF Technical Committee, a group of state agency representatives from each state, has been instrumental in guiding historical research priorities, facilitating current research, and, more recently, determining what research is needed to aid management decisions. current and future policies to ensure that wild turkeys thrive in perpetuity.

The announcement of the second NWTF RFP in 2023 follows a remarkable year (2022) for wild turkey research, including the conclusion of the 12th National Wild Turkey Symposium, the announcement of the 13th.he National Wild Turkey Symposium, $360,000 investment from NWTF and significant contributions to the wild turkey research efforts of NWTF state chapters across the country.

Project summaries for the 2022 research investment can be found below, and project summaries for new 2023 projects will be published on NWTF.org in the near future.

This Week on HSCF Radio and Podcast “Hunting Matters”: The Art of Concealment with Mike Slinkard, President of HECS, LLC

Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) and Hunting Matters welcome Mike Slinkard, President of HECS, LLC. Mike is also a lifelong bow hunter, former professional archer, and full-time entrepreneur who has started several successful businesses in the hunting and outdoor industry.

Born in 1965, Mike grew up shooting and hunting. His father had Mike shoot both bows and firearms at a very young age; in fact, Mike doesn’t even remember being taught to shoot when he was too young. Mike’s grandfather and uncle were ranchers, and Mike spent much of his youth in close proximity to both domestic and wild animals. Mike began archery hunting at age 12 near John Day, his eastern Oregon home, and was practicing competitive archery by age 17.

Mike has been lucky enough to have hunted all over the world and has taken over twenty species with archery gear including grizzly bear, Cape buffalo and 49 elk to date. Hunting elk with a bow is his true passion.

Mike opened his first professional archery shop in John Day Oregon in 1992 and went on to found Winners Choice Custom Bowstrings INC in 2000, changing the archery industry forever and bringing the art of bowstring construction to a level never reached before. This laid the foundation for bow makers to reach new levels of performance that had never before been possible due to the limitations of strings at the time.

Mike founded HECS LLC in 2010, which focuses on the emerging science of how animals perceive their electromagnetic environment, and Mike and his team have issued five US patents and multiple foreign patents on technology that blocks the human bioelectric signature. HECS technology is widely used in hunting, wildlife, conservation and research fields, as well as in military and underwater applications.

Mike currently serves as the President/Founder of HECS LLC and Closer Outdoors INC. He also runs subsidiary companies HECS Wildlife LLC, HECS Aquatic LLC, and HECS Tactical LLC.

Mike is the host of Hunting with HECS TV, which has aired on the Pursuit channel for the past 11 years and is currently the most broadcast hunting/outdoor television show on the air. Mike has a lovely wife of 32 years (Sharrie), two grown daughters and a granddaughter.

Big Horn Armory mourns the loss of its friend, John Linebaugh

John Linebaugh, 67, of Clark, Wyoming, passed away on March 19, 2023.

Big Horn Armory (BHA), makers of large-caliber firearms, mourns the recent loss of their dear friend and industry legend, John Linebaugh. Linebaugh passed away on March 19, 2023 at his home. Linebaugh, a fellow from Wyoming, was an American gunsmith who gained international renown for creating custom revolvers in the world’s largest calibers. He invented the .500 Linebaugh caliber, the first successful .50 caliber revolver (and cartridge) in 1986. He is also credited with inventing the .475 Linebaugh cartridge, which he perfected in 1988.

“John was a pioneer in the use of heavy, large-caliber bullets in handguns. He predates Smith & Wesson’s 500 S&W by almost 20 years. They probably wouldn’t have created the X Frame weapons without inspiration from him,” commented Greg Buchel, Big Horn Armory president.

He continued, “their pistols were almost perfect. The first time I fired one of his guns many years ago was at a shooting event he and I attended. He handed me his gun from his holster. The first thing I noticed was how perfect the fit and function was. It wasn’t necessarily the prettiest gun I’d ever seen, but even after years of use and who knows how many rounds it fired, the gun was a mechanical gem.”

The friendship between BHA and Linebaugh began at the annual Wyoming Outdoorsman fundraiser several years ago when Linebaugh approached Buchel at his table. After chatting for a while, the idea of a collaboration was born. The idea was discussed several times in the months that followed, and one night over a couple of bourbons, the two decided to produce a super-premium limited-edition box containing a 500 Linebaugh lever pistol and a 500 Linebaugh revolver. It would include show-grade wood, octagonal barrels, and color-hardened receivers, all packaged in an oak presentation box.

“John’s work and friendship will never be forgotten. We really have lost one of the greats. Our entire Big Horn Armory family sends our deepest condolences to his family and to everyone lucky enough to know him,” Buchel said.

For more information about Big Horn Armory, please visit www.bighornarmory.com or any of its social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, MeWe, LinkedIn, Parler, Locals, or Twitter.

About the Big Horn Armory:

Big Horn Armory was founded in 2008 with the express intention of designing a Browning-type lever action weapon chambered in 500 Smith & Wesson Magnum. Big Horn Armory’s American-made Model 89 closely follows the work of John Browning with refinements courtesy of modern metalworking and machining capabilities. The first rifles began shipping in September 2012, and since then, BHA has added to its large-bore lineup a Model 90 Carbine in 460 S&W, Model 90A in 454 Casull, Model 90B in .45 Colt, Model 89A in 500 Linebaugh and the Model 89B in .475 Linebaugh. In 2017, Big Horn Armory departed from its lever-action series and developed the AR500 Auto Max, the most powerful short-range semi-auto based on an AR .308 platform.

Southwest Public Lands Permanently Preserved Through the Antiquities Act

President Biden designates Avi Kwa Ame National Monument and Castner Range National Monument following requests from tribes, hunters, business owners, and local residents.

WASHINGTON – Valuable wildlife habitat and important cultural lands will be permanently preserved after the Biden administration today designated Avi Kwa Ame National Monument in southern Nevada and Castner Range National Monument in west Texas.

The Avi Kwa Ame National Monument encompasses more than 500,000 acres of federal public land that will continue to be managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The State of Nevada will retain wildlife management authority under the language of the proclamation, including the active management of water resources to support wildlife populations. Existing hunting and public access opportunities will be maintained, and the proclamation requires representatives of the hunting community to be on the monument’s advisory committee.

Located at Fort Bliss in Texas, Castner Range National Monument comprises a 6,672-acre historic test and training site for the US Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The monument will be managed by the Army, and the landscape will undergo a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) process to ensure public safety. Conserving the region will provide greater access to public lands that have been closed since 1966, as well as connecting wildlife habitat, for species such as mule deer, with the adjacent Franklin Mountains State Park.

“Today we celebrate the long-term conservation of public lands in the American Southwest,” said Land Tawney, president and CEO of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. “The Avi Kwa Ame region and Castner Range have historically played an important role in providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, as well as being culturally significant to indigenous communities and hunting opportunity.

“We commend the administration for listening to the calls of hunters, local residents, recreationists, tribal members, and others, and for taking steps to safeguard them biologically, culturally, recreationally, and economically,” Tawney continued. “Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has been honored to work alongside tribal leaders and community members to achieve this momentous victory.”

President Joe Biden pledged in November to promote long-term conservation in southern Nevada. The area south of Las Vegas encompasses Avi Kwa Ame, or Spirit Mountain, as well as Joshua tree forests, desert landscapes and the ancestral lands of 12 Indian tribes. The area is home to a variety of wildlife species and their habitats, including desert bighorn sheep migration corridors, and is surrounded by nine distinct wilderness areas.

BHA and a diverse community of stakeholders, including Indian tribes, business owners, and local residents, together have advocated for permanent conservation measures that protect the region’s unique cultural values and intact wildlife habitat.

“Hunters in Nevada have long known the importance of the Avi Kwa Ame region to wildlife, none more so than our state animal, the desert bighorn sheep, and to our outdoor traditions,” said Karen Boeger, a self-described “desert rat” who sits on the board of the Nevada BHA chapter. “We thank the administration for recognizing the value of this landscape and especially for directing the Department of the Interior to continue its work with the Nevada Department of Wildlife on a memorandum of understanding. We support the President taking steps under the Antiquities Act to ensure that our children and grandchildren can access these lands in perpetuity.”

BHA has always championed the United States’ national monument system and the judicious use of the Antiquities Act as a way to permanently preserve important great landscapes. The key to achieving this outcome is a process that adheres to specific principles and is locally driven, transparent, incorporates science-based habitat management, and advocates for existing hunting and fishing opportunities.

In 2016, the BHA and a consortium of outdoor groups and companies released a report on how national monument designations can support important fish and wildlife habitats while maintaining access to traditional hunting and fishing.
