Permit program funds conservation in Utah

EDGEFIELD, SC — Since 1980, the Utah Wildlife Board has designated a small percentage of unique and limited-entry hunting permits as “conservation and display permits.” Funds from these permits are used for wildlife habitat research, conservation and restoration projects, raising $3.9 million this year alone.

Conservation permits are offered to conservation and sports groups who auction them off at banquets, fundraisers, and other events. These groups provide 90% of the money raised from these permit sales for research and conservation projects such as habitat enhancement, wildlife transplants, aerial surveys, and deer survival studies. Rather than being auctioned off, the exhibit permits are available through a raffle held once a year at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City. Both Utah residents and non-residents are eligible to apply for these permits.

During this year’s annual conservation permit program, the National Wild Turkey Federation purchased several of these permits. The permits will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to habitat projects throughout Utah.

Over the past two decades, conservation permits have generated more than $59 million in revenue for wildlife conservation work in Utah. Without this funding, the Department of Wildlife Resources and its partners would have had far fewer resources to complete high-priority conservation projects. Funds generated from conservation and exhibit permits have led to the improvement of thousands of acres of critical habitat, as well as the completion of significant research to support DWR’s efforts to manage animal populations more effectively.

Many of the conservation projects that are funded by these special permits are proposed for Utah Watershed Restoration Initiative. Launched in 2006 as a partnership effort of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, this program strives to improve priority watersheds across the state. In doing so, the initiative promotes healthy watersheds and biological diversity, clean and abundant water, recreational opportunities, and enhancement of wild turkey habitat. Through continued efforts, the initiative has completed 2,594 projects on 2,392,035 acres of the Utah landscape.

The ongoing Upper Provo Basin Project is a prime example of the impactful work being done across the state, with phase 6 scheduled for completion in 2023. In addition to providing benefits to wild turkeys in Utah, conservation efforts under the Watershed Restoration Initiative also align with the NWTF’s Four Shared Values.

“I’ve been a part of this program since NWTF started getting tags to sell,” said Lynn Worwood, president of the NWTF’s Utah state chapter. “Going to the assignment meeting and sitting down with all the other conservation groups in that room and spending millions of dollars on wildlife habitat is one of my favorite things to do, because I know we are shaping the future of wildlife habitat. wildlife in Utah.

The NWTF is proud to support these important conservation initiatives in Utah and is committed to promoting the conservation of wild turkeys and their habitats throughout the country. To learn more about the NWTF and its conservation efforts, read about America’s Big Six of Wildlife Conservation.

About the National Wild Turkey Federation

Since 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation has invested more than half a billion dollars in wildlife conservation and has conserved or improved more than 22 million acres of critical wildlife habitat. The organization continues to advance wildlife conservation, forest resiliency, and robust recreational opportunities across the US by working beyond borders at the landscape scale.

2023 is the 50th of the NWTFhe Anniversary and an opportunity to push the organization’s mission into the future while honoring its rich history. for his 50 he anniversary, the NWTF has set six ambitious goals: positively impact 1 million acres of wildlife habitat; raise $500,000 for wild turkey research; increase membership to 250,000 members; dedicate $1 million to education and outreach programs; raise $5 million to invest in technology and the people of NWTF; and raise $5 million to build a $50 million endowment for the future. Learn how you can help us achieve these lofty goals.

FALCO® HOLSTERS INTRODUCES CONCEALED BIKE BAGS

Holster series for road or mountain biking

FALCO® Holsters, recognized globally for exceptional craftsmanship in each handcrafted, purpose-built leather holster and innovations in everyday concealed carry solutions, announces a new category of concealed carry holsters designed to attach to bikes and carry off-body. The new FALCO Holsters G125 attach to the bike frame, while the G126 attach to the top tube of the bike.

“During the warmer months, more people are out and about on their bikes,” said Katarína Zacharová, vice president of sales and marketing at FALCO Holsters. “We recognize the potential danger of falling out with traditional concealed carry on the body of a bike, so we developed two holster variations to attach your everyday pistol to the bike itself.”

“The new concealed carry bags for bicycles do not indicate that a pistol or revolver is inside,” Zacharová said, “and they securely attach to your bike with three strong Velcro ties. Even in the event of a fall, these bags keep your firearm, spare pistol, and extra magazines protected and safe. They’re ideal for road or mountain biking, and they also keep your common items like wallets, keys and phone close at hand for quick retrieval,” he added.

FALCO Holsters Concealed Carry Bags for Bikes

The G125 Concealed Carry Frame Bike Bag and G125 Concealed Top Tube Bike Bag conveniently fit micro, subcompact, compact, and full-size handguns while riding your bike. Additionally, they can accommodate weapons equipped with tactical lights or lasers. Each pouch is constructed of strong ballistic nylon and easily fastens with three distinct, well-placed 3-fold Velcro loops.

Both bag options feature strategically placed zippers for quick, one-handed opening. “Requiring only one hand to open the bag while driving is essential,” Zacharová said. “Plus, the layout keeps your content accessible in all situations.” Concealed Carry Bags for Bikes feature a main compartment with a removable, adjustable elastic sleeve to keep your side arm secure. “We recommend using your existing IWB holster inside the elastic holster for added comfort. Simply move your holstered pistol from the pouch to your waist. This means that your firearm is never out of sight when you leave your bike.” Click on the product images to view videos of FALCO Holsters bike bags in use.

Boone and Crockett Club and NRA Hunters’ Leadership Forum Develop Online Hunter Ethics Learning Module

The Boone and Crockett Club and the National Rifle Association’s Hunters’ Leadership Forum (HLF) are working together to develop an online education platform to teach hunter ethics. The groups announced today that they have created an association for educational programming to help communicate the importance of the Fair Chase ethic when hunters head out into the field. Fair Chase’s hunter ethics curriculum will complement the NRA’s existing hunter education modules to deliver a positive message to new and existing hunters, as well as the general public. The online course is expected to launch in early 2024.

“Research that the Hunters’ Leadership Forum conducted several years ago to understand American attitudes toward hunting reinforced to me that the future of hunting in America rests not only on recruiting new hunters, but also on acceptance by the non-hunters. Non-hunters have our future rights in their hands, so we need to do a better job of communicating our benefits in America,” said HLF Director Peter Churchbourne. “The Boone and Crockett Club are known as the experts on hunter ethics and it became clear to me that they were the perfect partners to help teach new hunters and remind seasoned hunters about Fair Chase ethics and conservation.”

The Boone and Crockett Club is and always has been focused on fair hunting and the hunter’s ethic; however, until the development of this course, there has never been a summary syllabus for people interested in learning more about the topics. Fair Chase’s hunter ethics module being developed will mirror the NRA’s existing online hunter education course, but will delve deeper into the roots of conservation, the value of hunting within the North American conservation model of wildlife and the importance of the Fair Chase ethic. The ability of hunters to take this ethic to the field and communicate this information to the non-hunting community will help share hunters’ contributions to conservation, food sovereignty and the national economy and ultimately help increase and protect cultural acceptance of hunting.

“When I found the NRA’s online hunter education courses, I couldn’t wait to take one and see what was on offer through their web-based learning platform. I was totally impressed with the layout and the way the information was presented; even after being a hunter for more than 20 years, I learned something new in every chapter,” said Luke Coccoli, director of conservation programs for the Boone and Crockett Club. “We are excited to partner with the NRA to offer a world-class digital education experience on the topic of Fair Chase Hunter ethics. This code of ethics is essential in showing respect for the game we hunt and forms the foundation of our responsibility to wildlife and wild places.”

“Since the days of Theodore Roosevelt and the founding of conservation in this country, hunters have had a code of ethics in their pursuit of wildlife. The ethics education curriculum being developed is essential to ensure that today’s generation of hunters understand and operate under this code,” Churchbourne concluded.

The Fair Chase Hunter Ethics Course will be available in early 2024. It will be hosted on the NRA and Boone and Crockett Club websites and will be free for all ages and experience levels.

ATA CELEBRATES FIRST ROUND OF ARCH TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION GRADUATES

The ATA conducted its first in-person bow technician certification practical assessment June 14-15 in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, and seven participants passed.

Kurt Smith, ATA’s director of industrial relations, evaluated the students along with Steve VanZile, director of the George Chapman Archery School, and recognized the achievement of all involved.

“This is an incredible milestone and achievement for the ATA and our first certified bow technicians,” said Smith. “We have received great feedback from members that this course helped them expand their knowledge and feel more confident in their abilities. Practice gives us the opportunity to see technicians applying the skills in a real world environment. Better yet, an industry certification tells customers that the technician is qualified and capable of providing exceptional service.”

Among the graduates was Casey McFadden, owner of RxArchery in Ohio. He found value in the course and is most comfortable working on clients’ arches.

“I have been in charge of the workshop for two years and I have no one to control my work,” he said. “Passing the course validates my skills as a bow technician. It’s good to know that what I’m doing is accurate and legitimate.”

McFadden found a renewed sense of confidence through the ATA Bow Technician Certification course. He has also learned new skills and is expanding the services he offers to customers, including things like adjusting the third axis of a bow sight.

The Bow Technician Certification course is ideal for bow technicians of all levels and years of experience. No matter how long you’ve been a bow technician, being certified validates your skills, adds credibility to your shop, reassures customers that you know what you’re doing, and sets your business apart from competitors.

Each graduate receives a bow technician certification certificate and signature for their shop, among other assets, to demonstrate that they have mastered bow technician skills.

With dozens of ATA members waiting their turn to take the in-person practice, the ATA is finalizing the details for upcoming testing opportunities in August, October, and December. Stay tuned for more information.

The ATA congratulates the first seven ATA Certified Bow Technicians and invites others to enroll in the ATA Bow Technician Certification course. Certification is a member-only benefit, so you must be a member to sign up. To register or learn more about the certification, click here. To become a member, go to www.archerytrade.org/membership.
