Celebrating 75 years: Dave Schluter

St. Croix Rod is celebrating its 75thhe anniversary in 2023. We’re proud of our 75 years in business and the control we have over our reed-making process: hand-crafting the world’s best reeds right here in North America. We are proud to have been owned by the same family for the last 46 of those years. Most of all though, we are grateful to you, our anglers, for the trust you have placed in us to add value to your valuable time and experiences on the water.

St. Croix co-owner Dave Schluter says he remembers how proud his father Gordon was 25 years ago when St. Croix celebrated its 50th anniversary.

“Gordon was passionate about St. Croix. He is the people; the heart and soul that our people give to this company that has been located in the same little town since 1954. I remember our 50th anniversary, and that was hard to believe. But that was 25 years ago. It seems like it just happened. I think my proudest moment was our 50th anniversary and seeing my father on the podium. Just seeing that satisfaction in his eyes; that he brought me the greatest pride. Gordon is looking down with a smile on his face and I know he is extremely pleased. He presented an opportunity that others could take advantage of. I think he would be very happy with the results. To our St. Croix anglers and team members, I thank you for 75 years of support and for being a part of our St. Croix family. That support has been and continues to be greatly appreciated.”

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Late Summer Fruit

Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers several varieties of pears to help homeowners meet year-round nutritional requirements for wildlife on their land.

The key to attracting and keeping more and healthier wildlife species, especially deer, on your land is to provide the right type and amount of food to meet their nutritional needs year-round. Food plots are one way, but mast gardens are becoming increasingly popular and help fill nutritional gaps left by other applications.

The soft mast is often overlooked but can be an important alternative or complement for other applications such as hard mast food plots or orchards. That’s why Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers several varieties of pears that will cover an extended period of time, particularly when the herbaceous vegetation matures and dies back and the hard mast begins to drop.

Varieties such as the Flordahome pear bear fruit in southern plant hardiness zones (8-10) as early as July and August. The pineapple pear reaches its peak production in August and September in zones 5 through 9. Then Spalding and Kieffer pears take over from September through October in similar zones. Several other varieties may be more suitable for your particular soil, moisture, and climate conditions, and all are listed and described on the Chestnut Hill Outdoors website: www.chestnuthilloutdoors.com

Pollination is essential for the production of masts. Non-grafted varieties require multiple trees for pollination. Therefore, they and even grafted and self-pollinating varieties will be more productive the more trees you plant. By planting multiple types, you can broaden the window of attractiveness your land has to wildlife.

When it comes to pear orchards to attract deer, the real star is Buck’s Harvest Pear. This variety was discovered on an old farmhouse along the Alapaha River in southern Georgia and northern Florida. They mature in late fall and stay on the tree until Thanksgiving, so while we’re enjoying our Thanksgiving harvest, the males are enjoying a harvest too. Buck’s Harvest pears are disease resistant with a traditional pear shape. The fruit provides excellent food for deer and wildlife and will attract them during hunting season. The success of new trees depends to a large extent on the care received during and after planting.

Buck’s Harvest pear characteristics:

  • Height at Maturity: 20′-30′
  • Spread: 10′-20′
  • Tree Shape: Modified Guide
  • USDA Zone: 5-9
  • Flowering: February-March
  • Fruit fall: October-December
  • Soil: Adapted to dry, well-drained or sandy clay or loam. It can handle moist soil if it is only seasonal and well drained.
  • Soil pH: 6.0 – 7.0
  • Light Requirements: Full sun
  • Pollination: Self-fertile, grafted. Each additional tree will increase pollination for better mast production.
  • Suggested pollinators: Plant more than one for best performance

Chestnut Hill is the best place to buy your deer feed plot and attractants because they offer a great selection, their plants are bred specifically to attract deer, and they offer customers different sized plants at different growth levels. To ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from their products, they also provide good advice and instructions on proper planting and care. TRACT Optics Announces New Innovative ELR Scope

Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. – TRACT Optics is pleased to announce the release of its latest addition to the award-winning line of TORIC riflescopes. TRACT continues to provide top-tier quality at below-market prices by cutting out the middleman through its direct-to-consumer business model.

The newly released TORIC is an extreme long-range shooter’s dream, with a 34mm tube and 4-24x50mm magnification in the first focal plane. The scope is adjustable up to 160 MOA or 47 MRAD, the best in the industry. This huge elevation adjustment allows ELR and PRS shooters, as well as long-range rimfire and BB shooters, to make fine adjustments at longer ranges instead of estimating hold. Most other 34mm scopes don’t give the shooter as much reach or capability without switching to larger, heavier tube diameters. The scope also features the ability to adjust parallax from 15 yards to infinity.

“With the continued growth of long-range and extreme long-range shooting, the problem of running out of elevation is an ongoing challenge,” said TRACT co-founder Jon LaCorte. “Our goal with this new scope is to help them overcome that challenge.”

Additionally, TRACT combines razor-sharp SCHOTT HT glass with extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses and a glass-etched illuminated reticle. The reticle is available with either the MOA ELR or MRAD ELR Christmas tree-style reticle with a floating center dot that does not obscure the target like typical reticles. This combination provides photographers with superior light transmission, superior detail resolution and an unrivaled shooting experience, as well as a perfect field of view in all lighting and weather conditions.

The scope is purged with argon gas and is completely fogproof and waterproof. The turrets feature lockable windage and elevation adjustment, as well as a zero stop for on-the-fly manipulation. A fast focus eyepiece and 4 inches of constant eye relief also come standard.

“The new FFP TORIC 4-25X50 34mm rifle scope provides a great amount of elevation adjustment to allow shooters to dial up distances that have never been possible before,” LaCorte said. “We look forward to feedback from shooters in the ELR, PRS, rimfire and airgun disciplines.”

Currently, this new offering comes in TORIC’s classic graphite gray and weighs in at 39 ounces. The TRACT TORIC 4-25X50 34mm FFP rifle scope will retail direct for $1,494 and includes a 3-inch lens hood.

Federal Ammunition introduces a new action shotgun designed for multi-weapon competitors

Federal is proud to introduce the new Federal action shotgun, meeting the wants and needs of competitors within the growing sport of shotgun action. This specialized loadout was created to provide the perfect balance of power, fireability, and control needed in multi-weapon competitions.

Federal Action Shotgun (federalpremium.com)

“Every aspect of this new ammunition has been designed to help competitors run their shotgun stages more efficiently and effectively,” said Scott Turner, shotgun shell product line manager for Federal. “First, this product is designed to address and eliminate the manual loading and magazine feeding issues that these athletes often encounter. Second, it offers the quantity and power that action shotgun shooters have been looking for. And finally, it uses the right components for the ultimate in pattern performance and reliability that competitors can trust.”

The action shotgun features a top pull card and coil crimp that adds strength and rigidity to the muzzle of the cartridge, allowing for better cycling in tube-fed and magazine-fed shotguns. The housing cup is made of brass-plated steel for reliable feeding and removal and reducing the risk of clogging.

“It was certainly a challenge to find the right mix of our existing components that make up this robust loadout. It took our teams some time to decide on the combination of head, primer, shot, cleat system and hull to finalize the ideal recipe,” Turner explained. “We are very satisfied with the results and we know that the competition shooters will also be happy.”

The 1 1/8-ounce payload of high-quality #7.5 lead action shotgun pellets exit the muzzle at 1235 fps. This speed strikes the perfect balance: providing the power to take down targets and the shooting ability to traverse a field with speed and accuracy.

The new cartridge loads also feature temperature-stable powder and proven primers. They are bulk packaged in 200-round boxes for convenience and reduced waste in the field.
