Jared Halbert takes first, his teammate Ehea Schuerch takes second

Halbert took home first place in the Elite Men’s Division, while his teammate Schuerch placed second in the Elite Women’s Division.

Following his most recent victory in the South Carolina Tactical Games matchup in the team event, Halbert returned to the podium as the winner of the Men’s Elite Division. “Utah was very hot, and the smaller size of the Foundation Series Plate Carrier helped keep me comfortable,” Halbert said. “I was able to win both action shooting stages during the match by having a holster that allows for a quick draw and a sling that is quick to manipulate, which helps when split seconds matter. Several times I was also able to stow rifle magazines in the cummerbund of my plate carrier instead of on the back of my belt, which allowed me to position my pistol pouches in more advantageous positions.”

Her teammate Ehea Schuerch battled injuries and a fierce field of competitors to take second place in the Elite Women’s division.

“This weekend was an opportunity to put my last two months of training to the test,” said Schuerch. “The second day, when I sprained my ankle, everything became a challenge, but it was me against me. The Daisy National BB Gun Championship Match (Daisy Nationals) brings teams of youth ages 8 to 15 from across the country to the Rogers Convention Center to compete for the National BB Gun Shooting Championship. This NRA-sanctioned 5-meter, 4-position match is in its 56th^he year of competition and crowns of Individual and Team National Champions.

The teams are made up of five shooters and two substitutes. These teams have practiced and competed all year for a chance to qualify for the Daisy Nationals and must place in the top three at a state game to receive an invite. In the match, the competitors shoot at an official target placed 5 meters away. They shoot 10 shots standing up, 10 sitting down, 10 kneeling, and 10 in the prone shooting positions. All competitors shoot a Daisy Model 499B, touted as the most accurate 5-meter air pistol in the world.

Each shot is worth 10 points, for a possible total of 400, but each competitor must also take a test covering gun safety and general gun/combination knowledge. The test is worth 100 points, so each competitor aims for 500 points. Proof that these kids are good comes from last year’s National Individual Champion, Zoe Dissing. She set a new record with a score of 494, just six points short of perfect.

But it’s not just the competition that makes Daisy Nationals a hit with young people. Events and fun make these three days kid-friendly. There are costume and car decorating contests sponsored by Academy Sports & Outdoors, Barter Bar (a local fetch swap night), and an evening at Rogers Aquatic Center.

As usual, teams come from as far away as Oregon to compete, with South Dakota, Virginia, and Georgia also being among the states represented. This year 15 states will be represented. Any organization can start a BB team, but most come from the 4-H Shooting Sports program. New teams must complete a 10-hour daisy shooting sports curriculum before taking up an air pistol.

“Some coaches bring their teams here every year,” said Daisy Director of Public Relations Lawrence Taylor. “I’m not sure of the exact number, but I do know that coach Howard Baker has taken his Oregon Timber Beasts to Nationals for 18 or 19 years in a row.”

Early bird registration begins July 5 and continues on July 6^he. the 7th^he, Competitors get their practice time on the line and take the safety test, then attend opening ceremonies where they compete for prizes in the patriotic costume, t-shirt and more contests. The competition kicks off over the next two days with the Closing Ceremonies ending that night just in time to head to the water park. Attorneys representing the Second Amendment Foundation and its partners in a challenge to Cook County, Illinois’ ban on so-called “assault weapons” today filed a 16-page brief supporting their earlier motion to summary judgment in the case, which is known as Viramontes v. Cook County.

The case is being adjudicated in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. It was originally filed in August 2021. Joining SAF in this case is the Firearms Policy Coalition and three private citizens, all Cook County residents. They are Rubi Joyal, Christopher Khaya and Cutberto Viramontes, after whom the case is named. They are represented by attorneys David Sigale of Wheaton, Ill., and David H. Thompson, Peter A. Patterson, and William V. Bergstrom, all of Cooper & Kirk in Washington, DC.

According to today’s response brief, “In trying to justify its ban on common semiautomatic rifles, the County proposes an erroneous analysis for this case, conflating the textual and historical investigations required by Bruen and then proposes to justify its ban in comparison to the historical fire safety. regulations governing the storage of gunpowder.

“Cook County seems intent on obfuscating this case by making arguments that don’t pass the constitutional sniff test,” said SAF Founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “The county maintains that the AR-15 and similar firearms are not appropriate for self-defense, which is just plain silly. It is not up to the county to determine what types of firearms are appropriate for personal protection. That’s for the citizens to decide.”

“The county’s arguments for why the so-called ‘assault weapons’ ban should be upheld do not meet their charge,” said SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “None of the arguments put forth in support of the ban demonstrate any consistency with the history and tradition of this nation. We look forward to vindicating the rights of our plaintiffs in this and many other cases on this issue.”

“It appears the county is making specious arguments simply to prolong this case,” Gottlieb suggested, “and delay the foregone conclusion that the ban is unconstitutional.”

The Arizona Senate read the proclamation, congratulating the NWTF for five decades of commitment to conservation, during its session at the Arizona State Senate office. NWTF Arizona State Chapter board members attended the reading to express their support for the proclamation.

“The National Wild Turkey Federation and the Arizona State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation are grateful for the recognition of 50 years of partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and all that we have accomplished together for the turkey. wild and conservation in this state. said Roy Crain, president of the NWTF’s Arizona State Chapter.

The resolution says:

“…WHEREAS, the National Wild Turkey Federation has spent more than $750,000 to assist in the reintroduction and ongoing research of Gouldian’s turkey in Arizona; and

WHEREAS, the National Wild Turkey Federation spends more than $50,000 annually on conservation and research in Arizona; and

WHEREAS, the National Wild Turkey Federation has spent more than $50,000 on scholarships in Arizona and more than $5,500,000 on scholarships nationally; and

WHEREAS, the National Wild Turkey Federation supports and partners with the Arizona Department of Fish and Game to conserve wildlife habitat, increase hunter participation, and invest in wild turkey research; and

WHEREAS, the national Wild Turkey Federation has accomplished all of these aforementioned accomplishments, the chapter system in Arizona, as well as the Arizona Game and Fish Department with which we often partner, has become established himself as a national leader among his peers…”

Through investments made over the years in Arizona Gouldians, NWTF has assisted the Arizona Department of Game and Fish in trapping and moving Gouldians from Mexico to various mountain ranges throughout the state. between 2002 and 2006.
