COLUMBUS — Applications for hunting opportunities on controlled public lands in Ohio will be accepted beginning July 1, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
These hunts provide special opportunities for hunters to pursue deer, waterfowl, doves and more on public lands during the 2022-23 season. The application period is open for all hunters until July 31. Controlled hunts take place in select areas of Ohio and are available through the Division of Wildlife and the Division of Parks and Boats.
Available hunts for the 2022-23 season include deer, waterfowl, doves, pheasants, squirrels and quail. The Wildlife Division offers hunts for adults, youth, people with reduced mobility and mentors with trainees. Firearms and archery options are available.
Hunters can apply for controlled hunts by completing the application process online using the Ohio Wildlife Licensing System or by calling 1-800-703-1928. There is a $5.50 service fee for the phone option. Each hunt requires payment of a $3 non-refundable application fee. Clients can apply for more than one hunt, but can only apply for each hunt once a year.
All applicants, youth and adults, must possess a valid Ohio hunting license and meet age requirements. Junior hunters must be under the age of 18 at the time of the hunt to participate. Adults must be 18 years or older at the time of application. Those applying to hunt deer will also need a valid deer permit to apply.

Participants may use a deer management permit during controlled deer hunts. Deer management permits are $15 and can be used to hunt antlerless deer only. Deer management permits are valid on private land and select public hunting areas through Nov. 27. They are also valid during authorized controlled hunts between September 10 and February 5, 2023.
Hunters are randomly drawn from submitted requests. Selected applicants will be notified and provided additional information about the hunt by August 8, including a permit, rules, and a map of the hunt area.
Each controlled hunt opportunity is unique, and applicants are encouraged to thoroughly review all site-specific information, including rules and requirements, before applying. Application statuses can be viewed through the Ohio Wildlife Licensing System.

Last week, Beatrice published an article about places you could go with a tank of gas for a short getaway or vacation close to home. Gas prices haven’t gone down, so the theme is still valid. Here it goes:
I focused on Indian Cave State Park last week. We are blessed in this part of the state with many areas where we can enjoy outdoor recreation in that format of a gas tank I wanted to use. This week I’ll cover a couple of areas closer to home that you don’t hear much about, but are worth investigating.
Alexandria Lakes State Recreation Area is about 50 miles west of Beatrice. It is secluded and peaceful, encompassing 55 acres of land with two lakes totaling 46 acres of water. There are many mature trees providing plenty of shade for summer days. Both lakes are designated as no wake lakes, making them perfect for canoes and kayaks. You can use an electric trolling motor to get around or your oars/paddles. I like to drift my canoe at sunset while laying bait under a sliding bobber setup. The scenery and sunsets are beautiful! There is a boat ramp/launch area at Lake #1.

The lakes were recently renovated and offer excellent fishing opportunities. Largemouth bass is probably what most anglers look for on their visit, but crappie and catfish are probably a close second. There are plenty of hungry bluegills and red-eared sunfish to keep the kids entertained.
Alexandria State Recreation Area offers Electric Plus, Electric and Basic campgrounds. There are 40 sites with 30-amp electrical hookup, five sites with 50-amp electrical hookup, and eight sites without electricity. The campground has potable water, modern restrooms, a playground for younger campers, and a dump and fill station for RVers. All camping is on a first-come, first-served basis. The camper must register and deposit their overnight camping fees near the park entrance in a locked, elevated box. Self-service envelopes, check or cash only provided. I’ve only done a few light truck camps here but would like to bring my RV here one day.
You will need a park entry permit and it will cost $31 for an annual permit or $6 for a daily permit. Campgrounds are $15 for a basic campground, $25 a night for an electric campground, and $35 a night for electric plus campgrounds.
If hunting is one of your hobbies, there is a Wildlife Management Area adjacent to the Alexandria State Recreation Area. There are just over 1,200 acres that offer the opportunity to hunt deer, pigeons, pheasants, quail, rabbits, squirrels, and turkeys in season.
Iron Horse Trail Lake is near DuBois in Pawnee County. It is an NRD lake, so it is rarely mentioned in the NGPC literature. The dam on this lake was built as a flood control structure in the South Fork Creek watershed. It was NRD’s first public recreation area built and opened in 1985. The lake and park were renovated in 2011. There are 360 acres to enjoy with 85 acres of lake. Visiting or camping here will require a vehicle permit from the Nebraska Natural Resources District. That costs $15.
Iron Horse Lake is a fun place to fish. There are a variety of fish species to catch. I remember a trip where I caught a very nice walleye under the spillway.
The lake is designated as a no wake area, but all boats can be put in the water. There are docks to provide better access to angles and there is also an ADA handicapped accessible dock. The lake has a boat ramp, dock, and island to tie up boats, which is a unique feature. I’ve been on a jon boat, but most of my time on the water has been in a canoe. One particular regulation you should be aware of is that live baitfish are not allowed.
There are 11 campsites with RV pads and electrical hookups. There are no water hookups or a dump station. It’s $16/night. Another nine pads are available without hookups and there is no fee for those or the tent camping areas. There are two primitive toilets.
Drinking water is available. Other campground amenities include a playground, picnic shelters and tables, charcoal grills, and fire rings. If you want to venture outside of camp, you can enjoy nature trails, a sandy beach, a swimming area, and a sand volleyball court.
Make sure you enjoy your time outdoors and hopefully you won’t break your budget.
No matter how tiring a hunt is, I can usually hack it as long as I can get enough sleep at night. There are certain tips to get you comfortable on a field hunt to keep you out longer.
It sounds simple enough, but in the field, it can be a never-ending challenge. Wet clothing, soggy floors, cold temperatures, high winds, and uneven sleeping surfaces can work separately or together to make you feel miserable, pathetic, and whiny at a time when you should be content, focused, and quiet. . In fact, I would say that getting a good night’s sleep is one of the biggest challenges facing a field hunter.
Overcoming this challenge isn’t a matter of piling on lots of layers and excess gear. Organizing all of this and trying to keep it dry can lead to more problems and more sleep loss. Instead, sleeping success comes down to getting the right gear, mastering the right tricks, and knowing what matters and what doesn’t. Remember: better sleep = better hunter.
tents There are many specialty tents that can fit into a well-equipped hunter’s gear closet, but the vast majority of your hunting needs will be taken care of by a stand-alone 3-season tent. There are great options available from Nemo, Mountain Hardware, REI, Kelty, Sierra Designs, and Black Diamond.
When chosen correctly, they are light enough to carry on a 7-day backpack hunt and durable enough to withstand several years of heavy use. They can protect you from rain, wind, and sun, and will withstand all but the worst winter blizzards if they’re well-fenced and secured with guy wires. Here are some other tips for tents.
Insect repellants and sunscreens can be extremely corrosive to tent fabric. Keep those things out.
A plastic or footprint ground cloth is essential to protect from rain and/or ground moisture. In a downpour, be careful it doesn’t stick out and catch water that will pool and soak you.
It is important to choose a suitable site for the tent. You will sleep better if it is flat. A great way to test this and also check for rocks and sticks that will poke you while you sleep is to lie down in your chosen tent location before pitching your tent. Remove branches, sharp rocks, roots, or debris. You are doing this for convenience and also to prevent your tent from getting punctured.
Be aware of large-scale hazards such as dead trees or overhanging branches, especially during windy conditions before snowfall. You don’t want to be sleeping there when that big poplar tree finally decides to tip over.
Take off your boots and leave them in the lobby or outside the store. This keeps dirt out of your living space, which is good for your tent fabric as well as your comfort. If you keep your boots outside, be sure to keep them covered, and also be sure to check them for scorpions or other critters before putting them back on.
For large groups and long trips to the countryside, and if your group is free of heavy snorers, ultralight teepee tents are a great option. For the space they offer, they weigh next to nothing and can be combined with a titanium pack stove to create a heated, portable structure. Tipi tents are also great as community shelters for cooking and eating, especially during cold or wet weather. Take a look at the tipi-style tents made by Kifaru and Seek Outside.
If you’re going ultralight or ultrahardcore, another great option is to learn how to make a simple shelter out of a tarp and parachute cord. A well-made tarp shelter can protect you from rain and snow, but be aware that they offer little in the way of insulation and nothing in the way of protection from insects.
Bivouac shelters: why you shouldn’t buy one Bivouac bags always seem like a great idea when you’re packing for a trip. What could be better than a miniature camping tent that weighs about a pound and packs down to the size of a water bottle? They’re especially nice to have on those dry, sunny rides when you never have to take them out. You sleep under the stars, grateful to carry such a light and windy load.
The problem with bivy bags comes when you really need them. Then, with the rain pouring down and the wind howling, you immediately realize you’re in a bind. You can zip it up tight and soak your clothes and sleeping bag with the condensation of your own breath, or you can open it and soak your clothes and sleeping bag with water from the heavenly skies.
The best way out of this situation is to abandon the fallacy that bivouac bags are a reliable alternative to tents. For a great compromise, get a quality one-man tent that allows you to sit up straight and drag your pack inside. When you come out of the storm, dry and ready to go, you won’t regret those extra pounds you have to carry.
Sleeping bags The two most important factors to consider when selecting a sleeping bag are the temperature rating and the type of fill. The temperature rating is exactly what it sounds like, the minimum projected temperature you can comfortably withstand in the sleeping bag while wearing base layers.
These ratings are famously inaccurate; You should always use a bag that is rated at least 10 degrees cooler than you will actually find it.
Fill type refers to whether the bag is insulated with down or synthetic materials. Down bags are lightweight and compress well, but are useless once they get wet. Synthetic bags are heavier and bulkier, though they still work well enough when wet to give you a restful night’s sleep.
As far as temperature ratings go, a 15 degree bag is a great all-purpose sleeping option that will keep you comfortable in the vast majority of hunting scenarios you’re likely to encounter. You can unzip in warmer temperatures and you can add a fleece lining in cooler temperatures.
If you have the money for a second and third bag, fill out your collection as needed with a 30 or 40 degree summer bag and a -15 degree cold weather bag. If you find yourself in extreme cold, you can double your bags or use a fleece to squeeze another 10 degrees of comfort out of a single bag.
Always remember that you lose most of your heat through the ground, especially frozen ground, so don’t underestimate the importance of an insulated sleeping mat in cold conditions.
sleeping pads There are three main types of sleeping mats on the market: closed-cell foam, non-insulated inflatables, and insulated inflatables.
For the guy or gal who can sleep comfortably at home while lying on a tiled floor, the closed cell foam pad will suffice. The benefits of this style are ease of use and durability. Since there is no air inside, punctures are not a concern and there is no need to place a ground sheet between the deck and the ground. Due to its durability, the foam pad can also be folded up and used as a seat while relaxing by the campfire, something you should never do with an inflatable pad. Look for Therma-Rest Ridgerest pads for high quality closed cell products.
For those who require a little more comfort, inflatable pillows are perfect. While typical closed cell foam pads give you 3/4” of padding, inflatable pads offer 1” to 3.5” of padding. They easily absorb small rocks, roots, and other lumps you might be lying on. Non-insulated inflatables are by far the lightest option, some weighing just over 1/2 pound.
For cold weather, insulated inflatables add another layer of protection between you and the icy ground. As insulating materials, manufacturers use down and synthetics, while others use heat-reflecting materials to keep you warm. The insulation adds a bit of weight, even if it’s only a few ounces. However, the thing to remember about inflatable pillows is that they require a lot of care. They are easily punctured by sticks, rocks, thorns, even by rubbing against other gear inside your backpack. Always place a tarp between the platform and the bare ground and carry a repair kit with you.
Additional tips to stay warm at night
Before bed, boil some water and fill your water bottle. Tighten the lid and put the hot water bottle inside a sock and place it on your abdomen or the inside of your legs. If you have a second bottle, put it at your feet. If you are boiling water from a stream to sterilize it, you now have two bottles of clean water waiting for you when you wake up.
Put on or take off clothes. Staying warm requires that you have plenty of room inside your bag for trapped air. Too little clothing can make you feel cold because there is not enough material to trap air, too much clothing can also make you feel cold if you are so tight that there are no adequate pockets to accommodate the warm air. In other words, a giant puffy coat could do more good on top of your sleeping bag than in it. Or put that coat under your sleeping bag where you can enhance the effects of your sleeping pad.
Wear a hat and face mask. You lose a high percentage of your body heat through your head. A beanie or balaclava can keep your core temperature where it needs to be.
Cuddle. Yes, snuggle up. In a pinch, sleeping close to your hunting partner can greatly increase your collective warmth.
Keep your bag. Clean it, dry it well and store it hanging unpackaged. Down bags can clump and lose their value if not handled properly, and synthetic bags will degrade over time if not cared for. Treat your bag not only as something that keeps you comfortable, but also as something that keeps you alive.

CITY OF JEFFERSON, Missouri – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages the public to discover nature this summer by hunting squirrels and fishing for largemouth bass. Both seasons open on Saturday, May 22.

SQUIRRELS
The eastern gray squirrel and fox hunting season runs from May 22 to February 15, 2022. Permitted methods include shotguns, rifles, and other legal firearm methods, as well as archery equipment, slingshots, or atlatls . The daily hunt and capture limit is ten and the possession limit is 20. Hunters may hunt squirrels with the following permits: Archery, Daily Small Game, Small Game Hunting and Fishing, and Small Game Hunting.
“Chasing small game is a great way to introduce people to hunting,” said Justin McGuire, MDC education program coordinator. “Because of the long season, liberal daily limits, and abundance of game, squirrel hunting provides many outdoor opportunities during the different seasons in Missouri.”
Squirrels can also be hunted with cage-style traps during hunting season, as long as the hunters have valid permits. Traps must be labeled with the hunter’s full name and address, or Conservation Number, serviced daily, and have an opening of 144 square inches or less.

BLACK BASS
Anglers can catch and keep black bass, such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, speckled/Kentucky bass, from May 22 to February 22, 2022. These fish can be found in most streams south of the Missouri River. Largemouth bass can be legally caught and released year-round anywhere in Missouri, and legal-size bass can be kept year-round away from reservoirs and streams with no closed season. In most state waters, the daily limit for largemouth bass is six. Fish caught in most rivers and streams should be 12 inches long. Additional regulations may apply to specific waters or areas. Anglers must have a valid fishing permit or be exempt.

2022 Celestine Streetfest Presents Best Mustache Competition
If you’re genetically blessed with the ability to grow an impressive amount of facial hair between your nose and upper lip (I know a 45-year-old who can’t…me), take a trip to Celestine, Indiana this Saturday ( June 25) might be worth it. Part of this year’s annual Celestine Streetfest will feature a mustache contest with cash prizes awarded to the most handsome, the most unique and the ugliest. Unfortunately, they don’t have a “prepubescent” or “most pathetic” category, so it seems I’m out.
The contest will be followed by live music from 8:00 to 11:00 pm by the self-proclaimed “World’s Most Powerful Country Music Party Band of 1990,” Mustache the Band from Oxford, Mississippi, who will keep the party going by covering several of your favorite ’90s country artists like Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson, Shania Twain, Brooks & Dunn, Billy Ray Cyrus and more.
Here’s a little sneak peek at the type of party they’ll be bringing to the event. Ironically, I see at least two guys in the band without mustaches ♂️. However, one appears to be rocking a real or fake mullet, so it makes up for it.

So did the fat boy hybrid skimmer I caught early on a scorching hot day at Lake Patoka.
The fish moved and splashed more, fighting survival instinct against a hook lodged in its mouth and the strength of my shoulder, arm and hand dragged it towards the boat. He felt heavier. And maybe that was because a second of the white bass-striper gender got tangled up in the wrestling match, this one weighing 5 pounds or so.
It was a double, two fish in, two fish fighting, two fish rolled up. Wiper Sniper Charters guide Kevin Hill provided instructions for pulling the rod up and spooling down on the 20-pound test line while he stood with a net. .
“They are stronger than any other fish in this lake,” Hill said.
When you wake up groggy before dawn to go fishing, you hope the fish have set their alarms too. On this recent day, with few others boating on southern Indiana’s 8,800-acre lake, they had. The fish actively participated in the angling to make the four-hour run the highlight of a three-day getaway visit to the state Department of Natural Resources property, just 110 miles away from Seymour.
Patoka Lake has 161 miles of shoreline and is famous for its fishing opportunities. But its 25,800 acres, making it the largest IDNR property, includes a plethora of nature and outdoor activities that also appeal to fishing families.
Too popular to be classified as a hidden gem, Patoka Lake, in fiscal year 2020, drew 657,000 visitors, according to an estimate by the US Corps of Engineers. Estimates of the number of cars that entered the park in the past They have reached 1 million.
Patoka has various attractions. There are 455 Class A campsites with electric service, in addition to 82 sites in a fisherman’s camp and seven sites outside the country, which are more rustic. As many places as there are, it’s still a challenge to book a place for a summer weekend. Some rent cabins instead.
There is a beach that makes swimming easy. There are hiking trails galore. Dedicated birders are looking for fresh species. Park authorities have identified at least 15 active eagle nests and 26 active osprey nests. There can also be accidental encounters with wildlife in the forest.
Patoka Lake is actually a reservoir created by the Corps of Engineers in 1980 by damming 118 miles of the Patoka River. It was established as a source of safe drinking water and to protect against flooding downstream. Patoka spans parts of three counties, Dubois, Crawford, and Orange, and is the second largest reservoir in Indiana behind Lake Monroe.
“In 2012, Patoka Lake was voted one of the 50 best places (in the country) to see wildlife,” said interpretive naturalist Dana Reckelhoff.
Reckelhoff made a list of wild animals from memory, neither in order of abundance nor alphabetically: turkeys, bobcats, box turtles, white-tailed deer, coyotes, skunks (you can smell them first), opossums, raccoons, mink, squirrels, foxes gray and red and rabbits
Reckelhoff pulled out a booklet of fishing rules and marked the types of fish that swim in Patoka, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, hybrid rays, blue catfish, perch, black crappie, white crappie, bluegill and red ear.
It would be more than a grand slam to catch everything in one day.
Hill knows that Lake Patoka has a wide variety of fish. He is simply a fan of hybrid strippers, a specialist. He is a bruiser type, and hybrids are fish bruisers.
Even at 6:30 am, the humidity was as thick as maple syrup. The day was on its way to 97 degrees. Even though the sun blazed up, briefly, raindrops fell from sheer moisture. A saving element was the cloudiness.
Hill drives a 22 foot pontoon boat. Guiding since 2015 after 30 years in law enforcement, he knows the contours of Patoka and the habits of the fish. He brought optimism to the water.
“Let’s smoke them,” he told me.
I’ve heard that before, but I never count my stripers before they hatch.
We trocha with six rods, very resistant sticks, to fight against the stripers on a level playing field, four with downriggers and two “umbrellas”. They were fancy lures, multiple yellow lures that also somewhat resembled lampshades.
The boat left a few miles from Painter Creek.
“They are the most aggressive fish,” Hill said of the stripers. “They are powerful. It’s the closest we get to a fish in the ocean.”
Large pools of bubbles appeared on the surface, representing schools of tarpon. Tarpon were delicious snacks for the stripers, so our goal was to sail to the center of the school and fool the fish. Sure enough, the ploy worked.
Two rapid-fire shooters took to the line. Hustle and technique was required to reel the fish into the boat. The first was a 5lb.
“They’re going to be bigger than that,” Hill said. “You have to be super fast.”
I was more steady than fast, but rarely slow enough to allow a determined striper to cast a hook.
Fishing in 17-foot water level, the stripers kept biting. I was fast enough to land two, and Hill brought one.
“Three hits,” he said.
Hill has occasionally seen frenetic action with multiple lures catching fish simultaneously.
“I’m fine with two at once,” he said. “When you get three, four and five, he goes crazy.”
We should be so lucky.
Hill said we should head to the “school bus,” an apparent reference to a school for strippers.
“We’ll see if they’re playing hooky,” he said. Or he would play with a hook.
No. But soon after, a fish stood out as a very feisty guy. I dragged it into the boat, and it was an 18-inch walleye. As his cousin, the strippers, we released that fish.
As the temperature rose on the hottest day of the year, we headed to the coast, a pretty satisfying return with nine hybrids and a walleye for me.
My wife, Debra, a very rare fisherman, and my dog, Boston, joined me at a rental cabin close enough to the official Patoka entrance, we could have thrown a baseball at him.
While there were plenty of nearby private summer homes and hotels a dozen miles away in French Lick, we discovered a pet-friendly cabin in the woods with a covered porch and BBQ grill. Cozy, but spacious enough with everything you need to cook and rest.
Owner Kevin Jenkins and his wife reside in the cabin during the cooler half of the year and live on a 65-foot houseboat in Patoka during the warmer months.
We were close enough to visit French Lick Resort, though we skipped the fancy restaurant with its $27 burger. There aren’t a huge number of restaurants near Patoka, and if a visitor were to bring their own food, with the exception of the Schwartz Family Restaurant in Eckerty, they wouldn’t be missing much.
If it wasn’t for the humid air like Louisiana, we could have hiked. There are 1,000 acres of trails with a hike as short as a quarter mile. Patoka also has a paved bike path (baby strollers are welcome) and a fitness trail where you can get in a workout along the way.
The Corps of Engineers Dam at Patoka also has hiking trails. Reckelhoff said there are “beautiful views of the water and a view of the dam inlet structure, the dam itself, the wastewater and the spillway,” reminders, he noted, of what makes Patoka a reservoir.
On this particular day, few people were on the beach, though Patoka added 1,200 feet of new sand last year to combat erosion.
“Hopefully one day we’ll add even more sand,” Reckelhoff said.
Patoka offers weekly archery, an 18-hole disc golf course, and hunting in season. It’s hard to complain about a $7 car entry fee for Indiana residents. If you’re bored in Patoka, it’s your own fault.
Tom Todd, owner of Tom’s Guide Service, offers a different kind of fishing experience on Lake Patoka. Using light tackle, 10-pound test, waving grubs and spinners from his 18-foot aluminum boat, Todd goes after black and white crappie and yellow bass.
It may have been melt weather, but a breeze kept Tom, Deb and I breathing in Patoka as we lowered the lines to 20 feet or so, Deb for three hours, me for seven.
A long-time diesel fuel truck driver, Todd has been a guide since 2008. He gave up competitive bass fishing in favor of taking a dozen grandchildren fishing, and later took up guiding. Once he was over 300 pounds, the 6-foot-6 Todd was down to 200, to the point that old friends of his don’t recognize him.
At first, the fish gravitated toward Todd’s line. He pulled three out of the water quickly. Deb hit a yellow bass and brought it in easily. He added two more fish before leaving the heat, but only after snagging my jeans. Tom hooked one of my shoelaces. And he hitched my backpack. I’ve never been mistaken for a yellow bass before.
Between casts, Todd and I made leisurely commutes to different fishing spots, distracted by nesting eagles and ospreys. An impressive osprey flew overhead.
Patoka isn’t just for Indiana residents. Initially surprised, Todd said he has guided many foreigners, including especially happy fishermen from the Netherlands.
Reckelhoff said visitors to Patoka “come from everywhere.” The visitor center registration book shows signers from many countries. Reckelhoff’s favorite foreign story dates to around 2018. A husband and wife from Germany sent an RV across the Atlantic Ocean and camped out in the United States, camping at Lake Patoka.
Tom, who saw a deer that morning while preparing his boat, guided us to a beaver dam. The structure was impressive, but the beaver did not appear. When we headed out at 3pm, the fish caught and released numbered 20, 12 for Tom, five for me, three for Deb.
Todd raved about a 1¼ pound white crappie I caught.
“That’s a rare type of fish for this lake,” Todd said. “I guarantee you there are people who fish this lake almost every day who have never caught one this big.”
Todd would know. Those old friends of yours from the trucking world are a little jealous that you’re spending so much time at splendid Lake Patoka.
They say, “‘Boy, you’ve got it made,'” of Todd fishing every day. Tom Todd smiled and said, “Which I do.”
