The new regulations are in effect for this year’s hunting and trapping season.

Coyote hunters and trappers are not allowed to use centerfire rifles up to .225 calibers to catch coyotes and wolves on the island during the now ongoing moose hunting season.

Hunters with a valid small game hunting license will be able to shoot the red squirrel. That change goes into effect with the opening of the small game hunting season.

Hunters are not required to purchase a separate shooting license for ptarmigan, which allows the department to connect with hunters and determine better accuracy in terms of population. Daily bag and possession limits for ptarmigan are already in place for the island.

Beginning January 1, black bear hunters who wish to use a trap must complete a hunter education course and have a valid harvest license.
