BISMARCK — In this week’s segment of North Dakota Outdoors, host Mike Anderson talks about a unique hunting opportunity this time of year.
Ron Wilson has been hunting tree squirrels for nearly 50 years.
“You know you go for a walk in the woods, that’s fun, but if you’re carrying a .22 chasing something, it gives you a purpose and I like to eat them, they’re good.”
Wild squirrels are nothing like their backyard cousins. Like deer and pheasants, they are constantly wary of predators.
This is the second year that the Department of Fish and Game has extended the hunting season until the end of February.
Cayla Bendel, coordinator for the Region 3 Game and Fish Department, says this type of hunting can be a great way to get outside in the winter.
“Winter can be a tough time of year, it’s cold, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors, of course ice fishing, coyote hunting is open year round and squirrel hunting can be a great way to just go for a walk in the woods.”
