New Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court
Illinois has a new Supreme Court Justice and she is making history.
Justice Lisa Holder White becomes the first black female justice on the Illinois Supreme Court. Holder White was selected by Judge Rita Garman as her replacement and was sworn in Thursday at a ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.
Inmate Transfer Case continued
The case that Sangamon County officials brought against Governor JB Pritzker’s Department of Human Services for delaying transfers of inmates deemed unfit for trial has continued.
Because Pritzker has modified his executive order at the center of the delay several times in recent weeks, the next hearing in the case is now on August 1. The original orders affecting inmate transfers were issued in April 2020.
Operation North Star catches 1,400 violent criminals
More than 1,400 violent criminals were apprehended by federal and local task forces across the country as part of Operation North Star, which involved 10 major US cities, including Chicago.
Authorities announced that 156 arrests were made in the Chicago area during the month of June. Among those arrested was a 19-year-old Chicago man who allegedly shot a US marshal and his K-9 on June 2.
Subsidies released for school maintenance
The Illinois State Board of Education has distributed School Maintenance Grants totaling $30 million to more than 600 school districts.
Recipients are expected to use the money to improve and maintain educational infrastructure. Eligible applicants may receive up to $50,000 to complete proposed maintenance projects.
Hunting Opportunities in Late Summer
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announces late summer hunting opportunities for 2022.
Squirrel season begins August 1 and runs through February. In September the hunting season begins for pigeons, teals, rails, snipes and Canada geese. Hunting licenses can be purchased through IDNR’s online license portal or in person at a participating vendor.
NASCAR on the streets of Chicago possible
NASCAR is reportedly coming to the streets of Chicago.
The Athletic reports that there is a tentative agreement between NASCAR and Chicago to host an annual street race for the next three seasons beginning next year. The deal has not been finalized and is expected to be announced later this month.
It is not known where in the city the race would take place.
