London arms manufacturer John Rigby & Co. has published a limited edition book called rigby Dagga Boy, presenting stories of African buffalo hunts in the words of the hunters themselves.
rigby dagga boy It is the ultimate coffee table book for anyone who has experienced the magic of a buffalo hunt or for those for whom bagging a scrum cap-wearing buffalo is a lifelong dream. Limited to just 1,000 copies and available to purchase on Rigby’s website, the book features more than 70 stories interspersed with behind-the-scenes photography and details of the vendors and professional hunters involved. The book is a compilation of the incredible buffalo hunting accounts submitted by hunters from around the world as their entries to the inaugural Rigby Dagga Boy Project in late 2021.
The biennial Dagga Boy project is designed to collect scientific data while highlighting the importance of valuing a buffalo’s age more than its ‘inches’. The aim is to promote ethical hunting and ensure a healthier and stronger population of the six species of African buffalo by targeting old and broken horned bulls that are past breeding age.
To participate in the Dagga Boy Project, hunters were asked to send Rigby’s team a detailed description of their buffalo hunt, along with photographs of the qualified bulls they had taken in the last 10 years. In the case of the 2021 inaugural project, the hunt had to take place until the end of the 2021 season and registrations closed in December of that year.
Rigby’s managing director, Marc Newton, commented: “We received hundreds of entries for the Dagga Boy project that absolutely blew us away, and the stories they contained were so evocative and extraordinary in their detail that we knew they had to be shared with other hunters.” enthusiasts. The result is a stunning coffee table-style book that gives the reader an insight into the exciting, dangerous, and rewarding quest that is to hunt down the wily old buffalo Dagga Boy. Some of the stories gave me chills and all made me desperate to book my next hunt.”
