Sioux Falls, SD —- The South Dakota Second Century Habitat Fund (SCHF) in partnership with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) have partner to raise awareness and financial needs, for the devastating effects the winter of 2022/23 has had on South Dakota Wildlife across the state.
South Dakota was affected by heavy snowfall and record temperatures during the winter of 2022/23. These heavy snowfalls falling over two feet and temperatures exceeding minus 50 degrees are some of the harshest conditions for South Dakota wildlife. As hardy as wildlife is, conditions like these are nearly impossible to survive without proper cover and accessible food sources. Due to the deep snowpack, much of South Dakota’s quality habitat has been rendered unusable, and food sources have been covered for months, making it extremely difficult for wildlife that were able to survive the initial storms to survive. the remaining winter months.
“Quality habitat is the key ingredient for abundant wildlife populations, especially during severe winters,” said Kevin Robling, GFP Secretary. “The availability of woody habitats, food plots, and other thermal cover are essential for wildlife in harsh winters and greatly influence winter survival.”
“This winter has been brutal across the state and if we want thousands of South Dakotans and non-residents to enjoy fall pheasant hunting, we need to make sure we care for these birds during harsh winters. Adequate cover and accessible food sources, especially in the late winter months, are critical to wildlife survival,” said SCHF President Adam Bender.
Second Century Habitat Fund Inc. estimates to provide up to $300,000 in project cost for the campaign. SCHF will contribute $100,000 to start the initiative, and they will match up to $100,000 of contributions from private donors in 2023. If you would like to support this initiative and are looking to make a significant impact on South Dakota’s wildlife, you can make contributions at the Second Winter Initiative. from the Century Habitat Fund Donations over $50 will receive a limited-edition Second Century Habitat Fund cap.
