Author and environmental activist Edward Abbey said, “Wildlife is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.” Getting out in nature offers many benefits, physical, mental and spiritual. When looking for a place you may not have been before, a kind of hidden gem, an area in our state that is perfect for South Carolina nature lovers is Poe Creek State Forest.

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Oconee and Pickens counties, Poe Creek State Forest is a beautiful place for individuals, couples, families, and even work groups to enjoy nature.

There are two cabins and a conference center available for overnight stays.

Gather around the fire pit for evening chats, roast marshmallows, and warm up during the cooler seasons.

There are various recreational opportunities during the day, including hiking.

For a moderate hike, Buzzards Roost North and Cedar Creek Mountain Trail are four miles round trip with stunning views from the top, especially in the winter when foliage isn’t in the way. Some parts of the trail are strenuous.

Long Shoals Wayside Park is a much easier 0.8 mile out and back trail that takes you along Little Estatoe Creek and into the shoals where you can enjoy various types of recreational activities, including fishing.
It is popular for trout fishing throughout the year.
Some enjoy slipping in the lagoon pools. Locals call the park “Sliding Rock”.

It is also possible to go tubing in the creek or sunbathe on the sandy beaches.

People of all ages enjoy the sights and sounds of the creek.

In the Piedmont Forestry Center area, where the cabins and conference center are located, a youth fishing rodeo is held every year in mid-May. It’s free and open to kids 12 and under.

Watch out for snakes!
Deer, bear, squirrel, rabbit and turkey hunting is also possible in Poe Creek State Forest.
