A Weedsport man is facing a series of felony charges after police say he allegedly posed as an environmental conservation officer.

Zachary Harvey is accused of approaching a group of squirrel hunters on Howland Island and identifying himself as an undercover DEC officer. The 24-year-old allegedly reviewed the group’s hunting licenses and firearms, took information and confiscated a .22 rifle before leaving the area. Harvey later emailed the group claiming the rifle was illegal.

Using video taken by hunters of his interaction with Harvey, and the email address he used, Harvey was located and arrested on two counts, each of criminal identity theft and grand theft, as well as a single count of criminal possession. of stolen property.
