This snake was looking for an easy meal. But it was not an easy meal! She caught a baby monitor lizard, but the lizard put up quite a fight.

“This sighting shows that we should treasure the little things! Don’t just go looking for what high-profile animals do in the wild, there’s plenty to see when it comes to smaller creatures, and sometimes what they do can be just as exciting to witness. ” Kristy DeLange told Latestsightings.com in sharing her experience.
“My family and I visited MalaMala Game Reserve in March and I was sitting on the porch reading a book when I heard a noise. The next thing I saw was a triangle of reptiles! A yellow-bellied western sand snake and a young monitor lizard were biting each other.
“Neither of us was willing to let him go and it was certainly going to be a real battle to the death for these reptiles. At first, we were confused about who was the real hunter and who was being hunted. Both creatures had a good grip and the balance of power seemed to keep shifting from one to the other.
“The tension and excitement built as the battle progressed and we really didn’t know which one of us would emerge victorious. Although the battle continued into the second hour, neither of them gave up the fight. The suspense was incredible! The lizard tried to return with a second breath several times, but once the snake finally constricted the lizard and grabbed the lizard’s snout, there was no escape.
“The sighting ended with a delicious and well-deserved meal for the snake. We were all completely stunned, watching the snake swallow the monitor whole! It was a rather rare but exciting sighting for us. Cats and other high profile animals usually get all the attention and we often forget that all animals, insects and reptiles need to hunt and eat to survive. The lizard was a good size for the snake, so I don’t think I had to eat anything for a few weeks after that!”
