On December 19, 2022, Congress released its end-of-year spending bill, popularly known as the omnibus, to keep the US government funded through most of 2023. The American Gamefishing Association ( ASA) is pleased to announce that the bill includes the Bycatch Reduction and Driftnet Modernization Act, which aligns state and federal policies to modernize the California swordfish fishery. The legislation was previously passed during the 116th Congress, but was vetoed by former President Trump on January 1, 2021.

“After years of hard work and countless unexpected obstacles, it is a relief to see the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act so close to being enacted,” said ASA Vice President of Government Affairs Mike Leonard. “The removal of large mesh driftnets, which have been banned throughout the rest of the US except coastal California, is long overdue and will provide significant benefits to West Coast Fisheries.

The Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act would phase out the use of large-mesh driftnets and help commercial fishermen transition to more sustainable and economically viable gear, such as deep buoys. Large mesh driftnets are left in the water for long periods of time, usually overnight, in the hope of catching swordfish. Unfortunately, valuable sport fish species, as well as marine mammals, sea turtles, and sharks, get caught in the nets. Much of this marine life is dead and discarded.

Once an adapter plate is chosen, the mounting process is relatively straightforward. As with any major tool assembly, cleanliness is of the utmost importance. Cleaning the plate, screws and tools will help ensure a perfect fit with no residue. After cleaning the screws, apply a bead of Vibra-Tite to the threads and allow it to sit for 15-30 minutes, depending on the weather.

Once attached to the slide, make sure the adapter lies flat and the mounting holes align with the holes in the slide.

Now comes the fun part, making it all work. Taking the appropriate screws previously cleaned with Vibra-Tite, insert them into the mounting holes. Torque is key to proper tightening with screws of the proper strength. It helps to use a torque driver to torque them to 10 in-lbs. It helps to finish this assembly by adding an oil-based marker mark over the screws and plate as a visual identifier for looseness when walking.

The next major part of the assembly is the actual mounting of your red dot of choice. Following the steps above, line up the holes and insert the appropriate screws through the red dot and into the plate. Torque to the same 10 in-lb. Again, it is helpful to mark the screws with paint witness marks to easily identify screws that are coming off.

Some important notes:

Seven logging companies and four conservation organizations are teaming up to fight the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) among deer, elk, and other species of the deer family (known as “cervids”). The new CWD coalition will promote practices that help discover, manage, and mitigate the negative impacts of CWD. The Coalition includes Forest Investment Associates, Molpus Woodlands Group, PotlatchDeltic, Rayonier, Resource Management Service, The Westervelt Company, Weyerhaeuser, Alabama Wildlife Federation, Boone and Crockett Club, Georgia Wildlife Federation, and National Deer Association. Now, through the end of the year, whatever you can afford to donate will go even further—twice as much, in fact, thanks to Orvis’s generosity and stewardship. The company will match all donations received by GRP through December 31, 2022, dollar for dollar, up to a maximum contribution of $10,000. About the Guide Assistance Program
The Guide Assistance Program was created during the global COVID-19 crisis to support Montana fly and conventional fishing guides by providing critical information and resources on unemployment, grants and loans, and financial assistance. In doing so, we realized that there was no social safety net for guides. With the future in mind, the Guide Assistance Program will continue to work to ensure a better future for fishing guides across the country, supporting them on and off the water. The Guide Relief Program is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
