Association applauds conservation funded by America the Beautiful Challenge

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (Association) applauds the Biden-Harris Administration (Administration) for awarding more than $90 million in grants for conservation and restoration projects through the America the Beautiful Challenge. Last week, the Administration announced that 55 new grants in 42 states, 3 US territories, and 14 tribal nations have been selected for locally-led ecosystem restoration projects under the public-private grant program.

“We thank the Administration for supporting the vital work of state fish and wildlife agencies, tribes and their partners,” said Curt Melcher, director of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and president of the Association. “Bold actions like the Challenge are needed to help us combat growing threats to our nation’s species and habitats, while ensuring everyone has access to healthy, thriving land and water.”

Administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Challenge brings together funds from the Department of the Interior, the US Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Defense to advance conservation work on the ground by state, tribal, NGO and private. land labor partners.

“These grants come at a critical time in our nation’s conservation history, the gravity of which has just been underscored by the findings of the 2022 State of Birds Report,” said Ron Regan, the Association’s executive director. “Large-scale, voluntary conservation projects led by local communities are key to restoring and protecting species at risk, such as those identified in State Wildlife Action Plans.”

Leveraging more than $50 million in matching contributions this year, the Challenge will provide more than $140 million for conservation projects that support increased connectivity, improved habitats, and abundant populations while stimulating the $862 billion outdoor recreation economy.

The Association thanks the Administration and participating partners for recognizing the need to empower state, territorial, and tribal resource managers, and urges Congress to build on this commitment by quickly passing the United States Wildlife Recovery Act. Joined.

Game and Parks receives grant to restore grassland and wetland habitats

The Nebraska Park and Game Commission and partners have received a $4 million grant through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to restore grassland and wetland habitat for at-risk species.

A four-year conservation project will take place in the Sandhills and adjacent areas, where wetlands and streams face disturbance and channelization. Grasslands are also being encroached on by eastern red cedar, which can reduce available forage for livestock, increase wildfire risk, reduce stream flow, and degrade wildlife habitat.

A voluntary, incentive-based approach will be used to improve habitat while maintaining resilient ranching communities. The goals are to build capacity, restore wetlands and streams, and remove trees through mechanical tree removal and prescribed burning.

These efforts will benefit the following at-risk species in Nebraska: prairie fowl, long-billed curlew, American burying beetle, royal fritillary, plains minnow, and western prairie fringed orchid.

Three new positions will be hired to lead restoration efforts; they include a Nebraska Range Coordinator, Prescribed Fire Coordinator, and Project Coordinator.

Game and Parks partners in the project are Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever, Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition, Northern Prairies Land Trust, Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, Sandhills Task Force, Santee Sioux Nation, and The Nature Conservancy.

The project includes several areas of the state, including the Santee Sioux Reservation, which connects to the grasslands of South Dakota, Colorado and Kansas.

Kissinger WMA reopens to the public

The Kissinger Wildlife Management Area near Fairfield has reopened to all visitors, including hunters and wildlife watchers, after a temporary closure to protect the whooping cranes that use the area.

Two endangered whooping cranes have been present at the WMA since October 19, using the wetland as their resting place and the nearby area as their feeding grounds. They continued their southward migration on November 11.

“We appreciate the cooperation and assistance of the public and local landowners during the stopover of the whooping cranes,” said Alicia Hardin, administrator of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s wildlife division. “These wetlands provide important habitat and recreation opportunities. By working together, we were able to strike a balance between the needs of this endangered wildlife and the recreational interests of the people.”

Whooping cranes are endangered, with a wild population of less than 600 birds. The entire population migrates through Nebraska each spring and fall between wintering sites along the Texas coast and breeding grounds in northern Alberta.

Whooping cranes are protected by both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Nebraska Non-Game Endangered Species Conservation Act.

The closure was standard protocol for Game and Parks once whooping cranes were confirmed on a property owned or managed by the agency.
