BLM formalizes approach to conserve wildlife migration corridors, supporting habitat connectivity

BHA applauds stewardship policy aimed at protecting important habitat, facilitating collaborative management strategies with states, tribes and other stakeholders

WASHINGTON – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers today commended a decision by the Bureau of Land Management to formalize the conservation of habitat connections, such as migration corridors, for fish and wildlife species, furthering habitat connectivity activities and raising BLM’s work with a range of stakeholders.

The BLM Instructional Memorandum, or IM, will enable the office to scale up its actions in support of migration corridors and other sensitive habitat areas in a substantive and results-oriented manner, bolstering its work on habitat connectivity, permeability, and resilience. in collaboration with the state. and Tribal wildlife managers and other involved entities. The IM also directs the BLM to conduct an assessment of existing priority habitats and the connectivity between them.

Priority activities identified by the BLM in the MI include the following:

  • Removal of physical and disturbing barriers to fish and wildlife (eg, removal of hazardous fencing, installation of wildlife-friendly fencing, improvement of fish passages, and construction of wildlife crossings);
  • Install signage to mitigate collisions between vehicles and wildlife;
  • Seek treatments that promote resilient species composition and native plant community structure;
  • Develop and locate water sources and other features to encourage the use of suitable habitats by wildlife in all landscapes;
  • Implement travel management and undertake projects that address the impacts of fire, drought and invasive species;
  • Support acquisitions of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and/or the Federal Law for the Facilitation of Land Transactions that promote habitat connectivity.

“Big game species need to have access to established migration routes to reach important seasonal habitat,” said John Gale, BHA director of conservation. “The Bureau of Land Management must be a leader in setting expectations and delivering concrete results on how these valuable habitat areas are managed. The policy released today will play a key role in our ability to maintain robust and huntable populations of game species, including but not limited to mule deer, pronghorn, and elk.

“Backcountry Hunters & Anglers applauds BLM’s dedication to conserving and enhancing critical habitat,” Gale continued, “and its commitment to working cooperatively to achieve this goal with a variety of stakeholders, including state and tribal interests, as well as other entities”.

Return to Deer Camp safely this year

Wear a helmet and seat belt when operating ATVs/UTVs

MADISON, Wisconsin. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) urges hunters to include ATV/UTV safety gear as part of safe hunting this season.

Every year people are injured in ATV/UTV crashes while hunting. A helmet and seat belt can be just as important to keeping hunters safe as wearing a bright orange harness or tree stand. Taking a few seconds to buckle up and put on a helmet can save your life and keep you in the woods for many seasons.

“ATVs and UTVs are great machines to help you set up tree supports, get to your favorite hunting spot or retrieve animals, but you have to operate them safely,” said Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR ATV manager. . “Please wear a helmet and wear a seatbelt if provided. When hunting on public land, make sure you are aware of the local regulations for using ATVs or UTVs on these properties.”

Follow these rules while using an ATV or UTV on your hunt:

  • It is illegal to shoot any firearm, including handguns, on or from any moving or stationary ATV/UTV.
  • No person may place, possess, or transport a firearm, bow, or crossbow in or on an ATV/UTV unless one of the following applies:
    • The firearm is unloaded or is a pistol.
    • The bow does not have an attached arrow.
    • The crossbow is not cocked or unloaded.
  • Find more ATV/UTV hunting rules at Wisconsin ATV/UTV Regulations.

One of the best things ATV and UTV operators can do to operate safely is to take an online safety course. A list of approved safety education classes is available on the DNR Safety Education web page.

Wisconsin law requires each operator involved in a crash incident to promptly report the incident to law enforcement officials. Additionally, within 10 days of the incident, the operator must submit a written report to the DNR.

For more information on ATV and UTV recreation in Wisconsin, visit the DNR Wisconsin ATV/UTV Riding web page.

Dallas Safari Club awards grant to SSSF in support of youth shooting sports

The Dallas Safari Club (DSC), an ongoing supporter of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) has awarded the youth development organization a grant totaling more than $24,000. This support comes from various chapters, including DSC Great Lakes, DSC Heartland, DSC Oklahoma, and DSC Charleston.

The DSC’s mission is to ensure wildlife conservation through public participation, education, and advocacy for well-regulated hunting and sustainable use. Each year, DSC raises funds through an annual convention, which go toward grants that directly support our mission of conservation, education, and advocacy. Through outreach efforts and informational content that introduces science-based shooting and wildlife management to growing demographics, DSC is securing a legacy of knowledgeable future sportsmen, sportsmen and conservationists. SSSF is honored to accept this large grant amount in support of youth development through its Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).

“As a nonprofit organization, we realize how much effort fundraising takes,” said SASP National Director Rick Leach. “We greatly appreciate the fact that these four DSC chapters are willing to donate their hard-earned funds in recognition of our mission of youth development. The Dallas Safari Club has supported our programs for several years and the continued vote of confidence from multiple DSC chapters is humbling.”

“Both of SSSF’s youth programs are very fortunate to have the support of the entire outdoor industry,” said SCTP National Director Tom Wondrash. “The Dallas Safari Club continues to invest in our youth, who will be the next generation of hunters and conservationists. Through our youth development programs, we aim to make the next generations the best citizens they can be. The DSC multi-chapter grant funding is an incredible gesture and we look forward to continuing our work with the support of DSC for years to come.”

With a year-round season, these funds are immediately used for SSSF youth programs. Holding its largest national championship event to date with over 10,000 entries, the SSSF looks to continue its mission of facilitating youth development through its team-based clay target, action shooting and international disciplines. As USA Shooting’s official youth feeder program, achieving athlete success can be realized at the highest levels through SCTP and SASP. Athletes can begin their shooting sporting journey at an early age and continue through college, which is encouraged and supported by scholarships offered by SSSF’s two youth development programs.

The safety and support of the athletes is fundamental to the mission of the SSSF. In 2020, the foundation launched its modernized coach education programs to help expand the national network of young adult volunteers in shooting sports. With new teams being activated through programs like SCTP and SASP every day, the need for a simple, efficient and comprehensive path to coach certification becomes a reality as the SSSF Basic Coach Certification Program. With the support of the DSC grant, SSSF plans to expand its training offerings with an advanced trainer’s curriculum and training focused on the international disciplines of skeet, bunker trap, pistol/air rifle, and sport pistol.

Satisfy your need for speed with the Hornady Lock-N-Load® AP™

Hornady makes reloading quick and easy with the Lock-N-Load® AP™ (auto-progressive) system. Set the Hornady Lock-N-Load AP (auto-progressive) system and calibrate for the shooter’s specific load, then start filling ammo cans quickly and reliably. This professional grade system helps shooters reload hundreds of rounds per hour.

This 5 station auto-indexing progressive press features Hornady’s patented Lock-N-Load bushing system. Dies lock into place with a twist, secured by six locking lugs. To change gauges, turn the socket counter-clockwise, remove it and insert the next default Lock-N-Load socket and bushing. Because they stay seated in your Lock-N-Load bushings, the dies stay exactly as they are seated, in perfect, solid alignment.

Pull once and the shell plate delivers five boxes up to their respective position in the process. The auto-indexing feature moves the plate half stage on the down stroke and half on the up stroke, making for ultra-smooth operation compared to other vises that do all of their indexing on the down stroke. Each pull of the handle provides precise measurements of powder, bullet seating, priming, and ejection, resulting in a perfectly loaded cartridge.

Experienced reloaders will notice the difference the first time they use the Hornady Lock-N-Load Access Point. The unit’s Power-Pac linkage system multiplies and speeds up leverage, giving reloaders more power with less effort, allowing you to reload smoothly and without arm fatigue.

The 29-pound unit mounts quickly and securely to a favorite level bench with two 5/16-inch bolts. All reloaders need to get started are dies and shell plates. Quick change bushing system allows for easy transitions. Go Load .223 Rem. to .45s in less than five minutes. One case-activated powder drop dispenses a metered powder charge only when a cartridge case is present. The Lock-N-Load powder measure uses quick-change measuring inserts that allow reloaders to switch from one powder to another with the push of a button. Add one to each die set for the ultimate in quick changes. Switching from large to small feeders is just as easy. Replace the priming seat punch, priming shuttle, and feed tube.

Finished cartridges are reliably ejected with each hit through the EZject™ system. If reloaders need to remove, replace, or insert a cage from the plate at any time, the spring-loaded cage retainer provides quick and easy access at any point in the process.

Bulk reloaders need the Hornady Lock-N-Load AP.

For a more extensive reloading experience, opt for a kit, the Lock-N-Load Ammo Plant. Turn your progressive press into a bench-mounted, rapid-production ammunition factory with this ultimate reloading setup.

Lock-N-Load® Ammo Plant™ Kit Includes:

Remington Joins Federal in 30 Super Carry ‘Ammunition of the Year’ Award

Guns & Ammo magazine recently announced the 30 Super Carry as the 2022 Ammo of the Year winner. The award comes as a new class of ammunition and a much-needed breakthrough in self-defense is introduced to the industry.

Remington Ammunition offers multiple welcome loads for this exciting new cartridge. The company currently offers a 30 Super Carry full metal jacket load in the UMC Handgun, as well as a jacketed hollow point in the High Terminal Performance Handgun, providing exceptional options for target shooting, self defense, and concealed carry.

“During Guns & Ammo’s extensive testing of this cartridge, we found it to be accurate, reliable, and effective in ballistic gel up to 12 inches. The .30 SC shell also typically expands and penetrates as deeply as a comparable 9mm load,” the Guns & Ammo staff said in the review article.

Targeting the gap between the 9mm Luger and the 380 Auto, the 30 Super Carry offers more capacity than a traditional 9mm and improved terminal performance than a 380 Auto.

With more than 300 years of combined experience, Remington Ammunition is pleased to support Federal in its 2022 Ammunition of the Year award, as each company continually seeks engineering breakthroughs and innovation.
