The Nebraska Park and Game Commission will accept lottery applications for cougar permits from November 7 to December 14, 2022, for the 2023 hunting season.

Permits are available only to Nebraska residents, who may hold one permit per calendar year. The bag limit for each permit is one mountain lion of either sex.

Season 1 2023 at the Pine Ridge Unit will be from January 2nd to February 2nd. 28. Prior to February 28, the season will be closed immediately if the annual harvest limit of four cougars or the sub-limit of two female cougars is reached. 200 permits will be issued and hunting with dogs will not be allowed during Season 1.

If the harvest limit is not reached in Season 1, an auxiliary season will be held from March 11 to March 31. A permit will be issued for each mountain lion remaining within the harvest limit. Hunting with dogs will be allowed whenever an Auxiliary Season is held.

Applications will be accepted from 1 pm Central Time on November 7 through 5 pm (11:59 pm if applying online) on December 14. Visit OutdoorNebraska.org to apply online or download an application at OutdoorNebraska.gov/mountainlionhunting. A $15 non-refundable application fee must be submitted with each application.

Mule Deer Foundation hires Jim Baichtal and joins partners at Sitka Black-tailed Deer Summit on Alaska’s Prince of Wales Island

At a regional Sitka black-tailed deer summit on Prince of Wales Island last week, the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) announced that Jim Baichtal has joined the organization as its Alaska regional coordinator. Jim recently retired from a 40-year career with the US Forest Service (USFS), the last 32 years of that work in Southeast Alaska; he is well regarded for his volunteer efforts with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and university researchers studying the Sitka black-tailed deer. Baichtal and MDF Conservation Director Steve Belinda joined partners at the three-day summit to discuss future conservation and habitat management opportunities to enhance deer populations in Southeast Alaska (specifically, the Unit 2 of AFG). During the week, MDF also hosted three community events in Sitka, Ketchikan and Craig to help rebuild member and chapter engagement in the region.

“The Mule Deer Foundation looks forward to working with our partners in Southeast Alaska on projects that will improve Sitka black-tailed deer habitat,” said Belinda. “Jim Baichtal has a long history in this area: he knows the people, the habitat and understands what the deer need. He will be a great resource as we increase our commitment to our mission – to ensure the conservation of mule deer, black-tailed deer, and their habitat.”

Baichtal and Belinda were speakers at the 2022 Deer Summit hosted at the Craig Tribal Hall in Craig, Alaska, October 13-15, which was held to bring together locals, agency staff and other stakeholders. with knowledge to discuss the current situation of black-tailed animals. deer on Prince of Wales Island. In the opening session, Baichtal presented information on declines in Sitka black-tailed deer due to habitat loss of old-growth and young-growth stands at stem exclusion, as well as an overview of his experiences with the research. of deer and his direct observations of hunting and working with deer for nearly four decades. Belinda explained the role that MDF intends to play in habitat improvements using End Results Management contracting authority and how MDF’s experience in other USFS regions can help with the situation in Southeast Alaska. Other speakers at the summit presented the results of the research, described the changes that have been observed on the island, and outlined opportunities to address identified habitat, predation, and regulated harvest issues. Community members were also on hand to provide local native and non-native perspectives on the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence deer populations.

Baichtal’s role in MDF’s work in Alaska will be invaluable in increasing the organization’s presence in the region. For nearly 25 years, Jim has volunteered for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and university researchers studying Sitka black-tailed deer, helping researchers monitor winter mortality, retrieve radio collars, collect pellets feces for DNA population analysis and assessing deer habitat. Realizing the need for accurate information on the Sitka Black-tailed Deer, Jim, Dr. Sophie Gilbert, and Dr. Todd Brinkman created the Sitka Black-Tailed Deer Coalition to raise awareness and support research. By joining the Mule Deer Foundation as Alaska Regional Coordinator, Jim will support MDF’s habitat work and grassroots efforts within Alaska. He will be the key contact for MDF associations in Alaska, working with federal, state, and tribal agencies, as well as the public to improve Sitka black-tailed deer habitat, raise funds for conservation work, and develop chapters and membership. In alaska.

“I am truly excited about this opportunity to work with MDF to give back to an animal that has been my passion for decades and now needs help in my home in Southeast Alaska,” Baichtal concluded.

True Knives take on the game with the Swift Edge Hunt Processing Kit

Game processing kits are as varied as they are extensive. For many hunters, packing both light and minimal is essential to success. This is especially true when game needs to be broken up in the field, to be taken back to the hunting camp.

An essential set of tools is a processing kit. These kits have everything you need to gut, butcher, and saw a freshly harvested deer, elk, antelope, or similar game animal. But these kits have many separate tools that take up vital space. True Knives aims to solve that problem with the Swift Edge Game Processing Kit.

A complete Swift Edge Hunt processing kit consists of seven essential tools that use the quick-change Swift Edge system. There is a 4-inch casing hook, a 6-inch steak blade, an 8-inch butcher blade, and an 8-inch bone saw. All of these separate blades fit into the Swift Edge thermoplastic rubber handle designed for use in wet environments that require a firm grip. The hook, filleting and butcher knives are made of 5Cr13 steel with a titanium nitrate finish. The bone saw is made from 65Mn steel for strength and wear resistance, while still having a titanium nitrate finish.

As with all Swift Edge knives, the blades can be changed using the patented 2-step process. This includes toggling the switch on the rear of the handle and pressing the blade release. To install, insert the new blade until the release snaps into place. The handle is also compatible with all lengths of the Steak Kit. The handle has an integrated lanyard and carabiner.

A molded plastic sheath is included with the 6-inch fillet blade. In addition to a molded plastic clip, a sharpening rod is incorporated into the design. Each item can be stored in an included nylon storage wrap. This reduces both the size of the items and the locations in which each tool can be stored.

It’s easy to see why a versatile and compact kit is essential for a hunter. The entire hunting processing kit saves space by utilizing the Swift Edge system. The nylon storage roll provides an easy to transport solution. This kit can be easily stored in a backpack, ammo box, car, light aircraft, or utility vehicle.

Game and Parks received a grant to conserve wetlands for species at risk

The Nebraska Parks and Games Commission received a competitive grant to work with conservation organizations and private landowners to conserve wetlands on two parcels of land in south-central Nebraska. Conservation efforts will benefit the endangered whooping crane and threatened eastern black rail, as well as common bird and wetland species.

The two properties will remain privately owned and remain in agricultural production as non-profit organizations work with owners to conserve habitat.

The Nebraska Crane Trust will partner with the property owner on a 285-acre parcel along the Platte River in Hall County. Wetlands America Trust will partner with the owner to manage a 95-acre parcel in the Rainwater Basin in Clay County.

The nearly $600,000 award from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, through the Department of the Interior, comes from the Endangered Species Conservation Cooperative Fund’s Reclamation Land Acquisition grant program. Nebraska, 15 other states, and Guam received grants to conserve at-risk species through programs focused on habitat conservation.

The grant is authorized by the Endangered Species Act and partially funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
